Vikings trade for Trevor Siemen, QB

Siemian: “As far as places to be, I’m very, very fortunate to be here. I’ve heard nothing but really good things about the locker room, coaches, front office and ownership. I’m looking forward to getting to work. I think I’ve gained a lot of knowledge playing some ball over the past couple years and grown a lot as a player, and I’m looking forward to coming in here and sharing some of that knowledge and applying it – helping this team and helping Kirk in any way that I can. Like anybody else, I see the tape and I watch Kirk week to week, and I know how good of a player he is.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to be teaming up with him and everybody else. I’m here for Kirk, I’m here for these guys. I want to win a bunch of games here and continue the roll this organization’s been on recently.”

considering where we were heading into this offseason with two QBs with serious health concerns and a "one hit wonder" QB, we've done well to get a durable, consistent starting QB and an adequate (or high-level?) backup QB.

i feel like we could still make the playoffs if siemen started all 16 games for us.

From the MMQB article linked in the Cousins thread:

When I think of a career comp for Trevor Siemian, who was traded from Denver to Minnesota on Thursday, I think of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Siemian may not end up as experienced as Fitzpatrick, or with as long a career, but they remind me of each other—bright, humble, excellent students of football, good-enough arms, good teammates as backups.

So I did a little research on their similarities, and it turned out a bit … well, “eerie” is probably the best word to describe the comparison:

Category Fitzpatrick Siemian
Brainy College Attended Harvard Northwestern
Draft Year 2005 2015
Draft Round 7 7
Overall Pick 250 250
Career Rating 79.9 79.9
Career Completion % .597 .593
Size 6'2", 220 6'2.5", 218

Kirk Cousins might have grabbed the headlines this offseason, but that wasn’t the only move the Vikings made at quarterback. Minnesota also swung a trade with Denver for Trevor Siemian, who was acquired just days after the signing of Cousins. Tim Yotter of Viking Update recently wrote that those involved with the Vikings offense had plenty of good things to say about the former Northwestern quarterback.

Yotter wrote that Vikings Offensive Coordinator John DeFilippo liked what he saw from Siemian during the offseason program but added that he’d like to see him pick up the tempo a little bit. DeFilippo said Siemian isn’t alone among those that need to speed up the pace. Every offensive player, and even DeFilippo himself getting plays to his quarterbacks, fell into that category, the offensive coordinator said. It’s all part of the growing pains with a new coordinator, scheme and quarterbacks.

Siemian and [his agent] McCartney talk one more time that night. McCartney tells him he’s officially a Minnesota Viking. “I’m beyond thrilled,” McCartney says. “This is an absolute perfect fit.”

“I’m pumped,” Siemian says. “I don’t think I could have gone to a better place.” He can’t wait to tell [his fiance] Podkopacz the news. She grew up a Vikings fan in a Minneapolis suburb and had brought Siemian, a Florida native, back home to Minnesota many times. She can’t believe they’ll be moving to the Twin Cities.

Trevor Siemian has starting experience, but does that make it good experience? He was benched in Denver and they traded him this offseason to the Vikings to be the backup to Cousins. So far, the results have been underwhelming and he has not inspired a whole lot of confidence that he can pick up the slack should something happen to QB1. Meanwhile, even with the offense not getting much going in this game, Kyle Sloter has put two really nice performances together and nearly led the Vikings down the field in the waning moments of the game to steal a victory back. Sloter probably has another season of being a "break in case of emergency" quarterback before he gets a serious look as the backup, but it seems like fans would be a heck of a lot more comfortable in a pinch with him rather than Siemian. The third stringer is always popular in these preseason games, but it is hard to not be impressed by Sloter.

I'd argue that Keenum wasn't all that impressive last preseason either.  He was better than Heinecke, but that didn't mean much.

Agreed. Siemian will get the backup responsibilities. Too much experience as a starter. These preseason games are truly meaningless in this respect. Trevor will get the nod. I really, really hope we do not see him in a meaningful regular or playoff game. I think Kyle gets a decent shot next year.
