Ertz restructures

If he's restructuring proven, talented guys that are core players, it's not kicking the can down the road. He's not giving them more money. He's just guaranteeing money next year that wasn't necessarily guaranteed later. Is anyone upset we just gave a future 28 year old Ertz guranteed money?

Restructuring guys like Ertz, Cox, Lane, etc are really good strategies to even out the cap. As long as they don't push money into their twilight years, that could be an issue. These guys are still going to perform at a high level for a few more years. And then they can be cut for minimal losses if they don't meet that level. Easy. Howie is a cap genius. Everybody know that. Teams will be copying his contract structures for years to come.

Restructuring in it's nature is kicking the can down the road. Yes it frees up money this season, but it also detracts from our cap in future seasons. It lowers the Cap hit this year and spreads it out across the remainder of the deal.

Right. But NFL contracts are inherently made for this reason. You sign a guy with money at the end of the contract that he'll most likely never see, unless he earns it. And by earning it, they perform at a high level through the early years and the end years of the contract basically become option years for the team. "Hey, we can cut this guy for 1M in dead money". Unless that dude is lights out, he's getting cut.

So, Howie should have no reservations restructuring guys that are performing highly and should continue that for a couple more years. You give restructures to lazy, malcontent, or money hungry guys and that's bound to get you in the end.

Howie is using the Banner way for some of these contracts. Sign them early when they show promise, give them a little extra money now so that you save in the end. And by restructuring guys that I mentioned becomes a no brainer. All he's doing is essentially guaranteeing another year or so of the same already good team contract.

I don't see it as kicking the can. I see it as signing up for another year of that player. But it's a case by case basis. As long as Howie isn't putting guranteed money in years where the guy doesn't project as playing at a high level then he can restructure all he wants. Howie's contracts are very maneuverable for this reason. He basically trap doors all his contracts so he can opt in or out at the right times. He's just basically exercising a built in clause. And the players gets to see more guranteed off market money. Win-win.

Isnt it just changing how he gets paid this year? Hows that kicking the can down the road

Bonuses can be prorated out for the remaining years of the deal. Basically, giving him more guranteed money so it's going to cost the team more in dead cap if they choose to part ways.

It doesn't really change anything for Ertz.

The team switches his salary to a bonus so the money of his "salary" is spread out a couple years, lowering the cap this year.

Ertz is just getting his money upfront. And the team has to designate it in upcoming years.
