All abouts the wideouts

I certainly like the Wright signing more than trading a first for a guy under a 1 year deal

Sure, but I wonder why the team didn't structure the deal in a way that would avoid cancelling out one of the seventh round compensatory picks. All they would have had to do was move another $50k of the pay into a workout bonus. The fact that they wouldn't do that makes me wonder whether they think there is a pretty good chance that Wright will not be making the eventual opening day roster. What else would they be risking by moving $50k from salary to workout bonus? They also could have tried to make some of the salary an very easy to reach incentive.

Half of me thinks that the exact details that have been reported are off just a little bit. There is a big difference between $900k average per year in the formula and $855k. If the numbers are not off I have to conclude the team doesn't want to risk a small amount more to protect the compensatory pick. The alternative is incompetence and I can't get myself to believe that.

If we're looking for a #5 WR and return specialist, maybe we should look at Quadree  Henderson from Pitt!

Stefon Diggs

Adam Thielen

Kendall Wright

Laquon Treadwell

Tavarres King

Stacy Coley

That would be true totally, but with Tavarres King now along with Wright, I believe WR is not of need at all for us.  And since we signed Sherels again, and basically being a return man is the only thing he really does, that and special teams.  Would love to juice the return game up but why sign Sherels again if they wanted to do that?  Henderson would be an option as a potential return man though for sure, but did have a kind of disappointing season this past year.  Could maybe get Greg Stroman late and also gain a corner, potential kick return man but they might be doing away with kickoffs anyway.

With Sherels at 1.4 Million for 1 year, could argue Justin Bethel is a better special teams player than Sherels and is a better overall corner as well, and is around the same age.  He signed a 1 year for 1.75 Million.  But maybe Sherels is a great locker room guy which I think he is, and fine practice player.  Still as a cover man he is not that great, unlike Bethel who actually plays defense and contributes.

Still WR, not really a need, was not going into the draft I felt and now with Wright on the roster really is not much of a need.  Wish they would have kept Rodney Adams but Coley is a nice talented young player and see if Treadwell can continue to improve.

Tavarres King played in a school-record 56 games for the University of Georgia and finished his collegiate career ranked third all-time in school history in receiving touchdowns (21) and fourth in receiving yards (2,602). The receiver notched seven 100-yard receiving games, including a career-high (and school record) 205 yards against Michigan State in the 2012 Outback Bowl.

The Broncos selected King in the fifth round (161st overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He was the 18th wide receiver off the board that year. King will join other members of the 2013 rookie class in Minnesota, including fellow receiver Adam Thielen, Xavier Rhodes, Latavius Murray and Kevin McDermott.

King was invited to the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, where he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds, ranking 13th among wide receivers. He finished tied for eighth among receivers in the vertical jump (36.5 inches), 10th in the broad jump (10 feet, 3 inches) and 13th in the 3-cone drill (6.91 seconds).

Over the past three seasons, the Vikings WR3 has produced an average of 35 receptions and 365 receiving yards per year with a total of two touchdowns. In that same span, Kendall Wright has averaged 41 receptions and 479 receiving yards with a total of seven touchdowns. Wright’s numbers aren’t drastically better than Vikings WR3 numbers, but they are superior, plus Wright has a 1,000-yard season to his credit. He’s a tried and true NFL contributor and he will give Laquon Treadwell and any other rostered receivers a tough competition for playing time.

Brandon Zylstra, who signed a reserve/futures deal with the Vikings in January, is a “long shot” to make a splash with the Vikings – but he’s OK with that. He has his sights set on proving people wrong. The native of Spicer, Minnesota, played Division II football at Augustana University before transferring to Division III Concordia-Moorhead. He was undrafted in 2016 and signed with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League, for whom he caught 100 passes for a league-best 1,687 yards during the 2017 season. Zylstra has drawn some comparisons to Adam Thielen, also a Minnesota native who started his career as an undrafted rookie.

Zylstra: “It’s super exciting. It’s definitely a dream come true. Playing for the Vikings is something I’ve wished for since I was in kindergarten.”

I don't believe the Vikings have has any Cobber alumni playing for them since Gary Larsen. While my expectations aren't too high, I'll be rooting for Zylstra just like I rooted for Ham, Sherels, and Thielan to make it. It is always nice to see a local kid make the team.

I think Zylstra's time with the Vikings of Augustana overlaps with Ham's time there. Pretty cool if that school has two players from that squad make the Vikings of the NFL.

Same recruiting class, yes. Zylstra transferred after his redshirt year though.
