Mike Pettine Defense

On some podcast today , someone said Perry and Clay were Pettine’s best pair of pass rushers he’s ever had. I remember The Jets/ Browns not having the most talented pass rushers; but how significant is that since he historically has created good pass rush?

Before anyone says it, yes they do need to stay healthy.

With special packages with really cool names.

Actually we should call them really soft sounding **** so the opponent doesn't take them seriously.

I've got a buddy in a death metal band. We used to bribe him with a shot of whiskey if he would throw decidedly non-metal phrases into his growls.

Some of my favorites were "fuzzy bunny", "rainbow marshmallow", and "unicorn princess".

Those would all fit in nicely here.

FWIW, we also got him to do the Charleston during a breakdown for a pitcher beer. Good times.

This is an article about Rodgers, but I am encouraged by the comments about the defense:

Scheming to get a free rusher, making it difficult on protection packages, the secondary moving around and not being in static positions- all things we haven't seen in a while, and which will not only make the defense better, it will improve the offense that has to practice against it.

Yeah, cause run defense means ****

I mean, a couple of years ago everyone was complaining about our run D and then the Packers go out and fix that and they become porous on the backend.

I was impressed with Montravius Adams and his quick takeoff last night.

With Pettine's statement about the importance of inside pass rush, I have to wonder if he won't play a big role on passing downs this year.

I also noticed that Pettine used Wilkerson on a zone drop on one play- makes me wonder if we will see less 2-4 nickel sets and more 3-3 or 4-2 sets.  Seems like they will be able to change things up a lot to stress protection packages this year.

So maybe, just maybe, it wasn't our personnel holding us back all this time.

Capers has historically ran middling-at-best defenses after having a great first couple of years with every team he's been the DC, just sayin'.

Taking the Hayden Frye route eh?

Let's try the milkmaid package followed by the dank hash and then on third down we'll run the Miller Lite 6 pack...

Wanted to run through and look at some Pettine alignments. Here are a set from the first 9 plays from the 2015 game against the Jets.

Here's a nickel alignment. There's a hanging safety on the strong side that can either step into the box or drop off into a deeper zone.

You never really saw Capers run a look with 5 guys in the first level and 1 on the second level.

The equivalent with this roster would be: Perry-Daniels-Clark-Wilkerson-Matthews and then Martinez by himself on the second level.

Replacing an inside linebacker with 5-tech is something that's becoming more common.

Here's a base look. Pretty standard 3-4 set with one side overloaded. Pretty standard look.

Another 3-3 nickel look. This one shaded into a standard 4-2 look with the strong OLB replaced with a genuine BIG.

Here's a pressure package look from Pettine. It's 3rd and 3 so they're not all the way sold out on it yet, but you can see the change in principles.

The two A-gap rushers make it tough on the offensive line to figure out who's coming from where. You force either the back or the Center to have to block a rusher 1v1 which is the idea.

There's another base look. This time with a FB instead of a second TE.

Another pressure look, this time choosing to spread everyone out. You can run a bunch of stunts and twists out of this look.

So no Jake Ryan in this nickel alignment even if he wasn't IR'd
