Mike Pettine Defense

The 2017 NFL sacks leader was traded in March of 2016 (by an AFC team to a NFC team) for a late 2016 2nd round pick (later than the Pack's 2nd round pick) and a throwaway player.

He was traded (at age 26) mostly because he was set to get a huge new contract in 2017, which he did.

We have no idea whether the Packers could have traded for that player.

In 2017, we gave Nick Perry a significant new contract (not as big as the one given to the 2017 sacks leader), continued to pay Clay a lot of money, and hoped draftees Kyler Fackrell and Vince Biegel would develop.

Both Brice and Ha Ha need to improve in both tackling and tracking and honestly, I think both have reached their ceilings. Lets go get Earl Thomas and end this nonsense, he is exactly what the doctor ordered and he is available.

Even with our **** pass rush, this is probably true.

This is what I was getting at too. I've been harping on our safety play. Pass rush isn't good but I truly feel like those guys back there are losing us games

Can it be consciously done, or is it more just dumb luck?  I tend to favor the latter.  Even in the first round, picks are about a 50-50 chance of being a hit.

Don't get me wrong, Spielman is a very good GM, probably one of the top GM's.  He had something like 6 or 7 pro bowl players in his first three drafts.  But you are starting to see that change just like it did for Thompson and picks are starting to miss- Treadwell is sure looking like a miss as an example.

I think we deal each year with the effect of Aaron Rodgers:  The Good- where he can, through sheer talent- take a team much farther than other QB's could with a given level of roster talent,  and The Bad- where his ability to make the team more successful than the roster talent ordinarily would achieve puts us in a disadvantaged draft position.

Beg to differ with the bolded.  He was LUCKY to get two DEs that were later round picks that developed.  It just doesn't happen.  He is also the guy who drafted Matt Kalil #4 overall, WR Treadwell and he's spent 3, let me write that out THREE first round picks on QBs failed and then had to go out and guarantee $84M to a so-so QB.  Now he has NO OL and their defense isn't going to replicate the year they had last year.

Not picking on you, but people say something enough and they start to believe it.  First it was Schneider in Seattle where everythings turned to sh**.  Dorsey was escorted out of KC and they are the surprise of the league so far. Plus, Dorsey walked into a sweet deal in Cleveland, some highend talent on board and a crap ton of high picks that were gifted to him.  Anyway, we have our problems, but they are identifiable and correctable- just maybe NOT this year.

Why stop with Thomas? Sign Reid too.

We either need a safety to give our pass rushers another second to get after the QB or a pass rusher to cut a second off the time our safeties have to cover deep.

The defense as constructed isnt good enough.

I agree with this.

With Perry unfortunately dealing with a concussion, if he is not able to go on Sunday does Pettine just unleash more Fackrell on the Bills?

Does Gute call up Donnerson or just go with the 3 OLBs or will Petting let Crawford, Toomer or some other candidate try their luck?

Guess Pettine could also go with more 4 down lineman looks, though with Wilkerson likely gone for the season that might not be ideal.

I just want to say you were right about the Kizer trade at the time. What a bad deal for us - Kizer at this moment is not an upgrade over Hundley and we could really use Damarious over Brice right now. Good call on that one.
