OG_C2X
Im a white guy who grew up in Oakland. Not the hills, but 56th and MacArthur. Its a rough area. But to be scared of it is made up in your head. Every city has "rough areas" and Oakland has a few. But Oakland is one of the most amazing cities in the world (take it from someone that has seen alot of thw world). The cultural diversity is unparalleled. Very rare in many other cities across the world can a Cambodian, Puerto Rican, Norwegian, Mexican, Pakistanian, an African American immigrants or 1st generation Ameficans can grow up on the same street as a guy whos family had been there since the 20s Don't be ignorant please. Oakland is an amazing city with some major issues. But to classify the city as a dump, or ghetto or to say it got Scary really quickly is just stereotypes you've created in your head that are causing those reactions. Because with an open mind Oakland is amazing. Edited September 20, 2019 by OG_C2X

big_palooka
Just like parts of Atlanta, or other major cities, if you are looking for trouble, it will find you.

Most of Oakland is one giant looking ghetto area, there is nothing appeasing about it. Not to mention, it’s extremely dirty and people litter everywhere and the city does’t care. It’s probably the dirtiest city in California.

RaidersAreOne
I did a trip to San Fran/Oakland when I was in High School, like grade 10 or something. We stayed in San Fran, took the BART to the Stadium, took in the game then left right after. That's 100% what you should do. San Fran is an awesome city. East L.A. and Compton come to mind. I’d still put Oakland as worse though. If I ever live in L.A. I’d probably move to Culver City. Really like that town. L.A. just so expensive though. San Francisco is at least twice as unsafe as Oakland. I used to work in SF and live in Oakland. My 2 block walk to bart in SF was far more "scary" then my mile long walk in Oakland. Way more homeless and openly using drug addicts

All of those are much nicer than Oakland, although I’m sure Chicago has some Oakland-Like and ROUGH areas. Hayward is a dump as well, was born there. Most of the east bay is a dump. Concord, Walnut Creek are cool but Oakland-San Leandro-Hayward-Castro Valley are all major dumps and extremely dirty.

Lol anywhere in the Bay Area is expensive housing, what the heck is your point? It’s expensive cause that’s where the high paying jobs are and nice weather are. Roseville, beautiful growing city, houses still worth 500k and they are brand new and 2500sf, not the 1950’s junk you see in the Bay. This town has green everywhere, tree every couple feet, and absolutely 100% no littering. Crime is VERY LOW. Can walk at 2am no worries. But I also stay in San Leandro or Concord on business often. I grew up in San Leandro and lived there 20 years. I lived 5 minutes from the Coliseum directly on the San Leandro/Oakland border. Was in Oakland almost every day, and yeah, yikes.
