Upgrading the Jets pass rush

With all the good that has happened recently, there is one dire area of need that we have yet to improve: the pass rush.

Adding Tru Johnson will help to an extent, but Leo Williams will to step up big time. He's our top pass rusher. It's still possible we land a day 1 situational rusher in the 3rd round (Armstrong, Turay come to mind) or one of the players on the roster step up, but it's still going to take a helluva coaching effort by Bowles to manufacture pressure and he will need. Figured we can discuss our ideas here.

One underrated aspect to look out for this year: a lot more pass rush opportunities for Darron Lee. I don't think adding Kevin Pierre-Louis should be overlooked as he can step in alongside Avery Williamson to help handle ILB duties. That kind of lineup would help promote situations where the Jets can utilize Lee's speed  and blitzing ability at OLB. He was quietly one of our more productive pass rushers per snap last year. The same can be said for Jamal Adams, who blitz more than any safety in the NFL last year (73 times)

There are going to be decent pass rushers available to the Jets with their 3rd and 4th round picks. I can't see us not getting one. Hubbard is my top choice for us as an every down edge but I don't see him being there for us in the 3rd round.

Would have been nice to see Ejiofor and Turay do some drill at the combine.

What do you think of Ogbonnia Okoronkwo? I think he's a good pass rusher with a few good moves including a spin. He also seems to be a capable pass defender. Biggest knock on him is that he gets engulfed by lineman against the run. So, I don't see him as an every down Edge. But could be more of a 3rd down guy. Might be a good pick up in the 4th if we go O-Line with our 3rd pick.

Semi-related but how did the Jets take Coples over Chandler Jones. Still makes me so mad to this day. He was our next John Abraham.

I was dying for us to draft CJ. At the time though a lot on here thought he was too raw. Think we were all shocked when we got Coples. I didn’t like how we didn’t develop him as a 3-4 DE as he looked good as a rookie. We then drafted Sheldon and moved him to OLB.

Pretty much. I don't see many changes from last year. This defense will be good against the run, better against the pass, but still have issues getting to the QB. Hopefully we can at least get a pass rush specialist to bring in on 3rd downs.

Base tends to be more nickel these days.  Pennel would probably play NT and McClendon DE with Cooper.

I was thinking is it going to be more 4-2-5 or 3-3-5 or 2-4-5

True. So, substitute in Skrine for Martin. It would be interesting to see Skrine's numbers just in the slot. But not many changes from last year except that our pass coverage should be stronger. Kind of see us as a middle of the pack defense.

Yeah I was thinking 3-3-5 makes sense.

DE: Williams
NT: Pennel
DE: McClendon/Cooper

WILL: Lee
MLB: Williamson
SAM: Jenkins/(3rd down pass rusher)

Bowles can get creative with blitzing Lee, Adams, Skrine from all over the place.  Skrine handles 3rd WR duties and Lee/Adams handle TE's.

This is the long question like QB, we can never find that edge rusher. WIthout that dominating pass rusher our defense won't reach that high level.

Idk why we don't go sign Bennie Logan, hes out in FA and would be a solid addition to DT spot.   Hopefully we can find some kind of sleeper pass rusher. We also need OL depth. Hopefully we will sign Hurns who should give us more depth at WR.

Assuming we take a QB round 1, the rest of the picks can go OL, TE, DL/edge rusher/
