Its Going to be a Defensive draft

The Chicago Bears are headed in a new direction on both sides of the field. Ryan Pace has set the table for the Bears offense to join the party with modern innovative offensive schemes.

While we have a revamped offense do expect Ryan to target Defensive playmakers throughout the draft. Retaining coveted DC Vic Fangio after finishing in the Top 10 of the NFL in defense was the 1st step. Now Pace will give Fangio his chest pieces. Expect the young GM now accompanied by a young Head Coach in Nagy to bring this defense up to speed. By speed I mean that literally. Fangio is a wizard with the playbook for a 34 scheme but the personnel at his disposal lacked two things that the best NFL defenses now feature Versatility and Speed. This draft class while underwhelming offensively, defensively it has those players in spades. That is why Pace opened the checkbook to veterans on the open market on the offensive side of the ball to bring young guns in on the defense that already has a foundation via the draft.

Rd 1 LB Tremaine Edmunds VTech 6-5 250lbs

The first piece handed to Fangio will be a piece he is very comfortable with. Fangio's greatest defenses were built around his Linebacker room. Patick Willis, Navarro Bowman, Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, and Chris Borland. Edmunds is sure to fall in this category. In a league now where sideline to sideline backers are a necessity (4.5 40 yrd dash)The 19 year old Edmunds is a must have. Ability to cover the seams with tight ends and slots, Run with running backs on the ground as well as through the air, and the best part of it all is he will probably be the best ILB blitzer we have seen on the Lake Front. A defense that presents a pass rusher at ILB even in the base is a headache to game plan for.
Player Comp: Anthony Barr inside a 3-4

Rd 2 Harold Landry Boston College 6-3 250lbs

In a division that features 3 perrenial 4000 yard passers you need QB hunters, and Harold Landry is exactly that. With Leonard Floyd and Aaron Lynch as our only outside edge rushers I cant see Pace NOT having secret meetings dressed as a Chef at Chicago Cut with Landry. Pace places a premium on speed and with Landry that is exactly what you get(4.6 40). A devastating first step with the ability to scrape his knuckles on the ground in the mold of Von Miller. No other pass rusher in this draft has the ability to run UNDER tackles the way Landry does. While Landry will slide because he can get smothered in the run game with his hand in the dirt. He falls to the best scheme possible as he is able to stand up and rush in the Bears 34. Landry will likely be the steal of this draft. Landry's speed and smarts will be too much for NFL Right tackles
Player Comp: Vic Beasley

Rd 4 Desmond Harrison W. Georgia 6-6 290lbs

Mitch and Nagy get one more for the gang. Harrison a former promising recruit for The University of Texas is the athletic tackle missing from the Bears Oline. With Nagy and Helfrich implementing more spread priciples Harrison answers a need in later rounds. Harrison is high risk/high reward dismissed from Texas Harrison landed in West Georgia embarrassing opposing Dlineman. Pancake after pancake Hole after Hole this Tackle plays mean and has a bit of a bad guy streak. With establised vets on the line, the locker room presence should wake the youngin' up Harrison is a risk worth taking. Remember Pace doesnt shy away from players at small schools and was on the saints staff when they selected Terron Armstead.
Player Comp: Terron Armstead

Rd 4 Ogbonnia Okoronkwo Okla 6-1 240lbs

One of the most intriguing defensive playmakers in the draft. OG dominated the pass happy big 12. Coming into the Big leagues the undersized pass rusher could serve as a pass rush specialist in the Bears scheme. OG is a bit on the shorter side at 6-1 which will cause his slide. Without the ideal length to play with his hands in the dirt OG will only appeal to 3-4 teams. This suits the Bears as the cupboard is bare in terms of edge rushers. OG can also play at inside backer because of his ability to cover. In terms of the future with Danny T nearing the end of his deal OG and his impressive skillset could see him turn into a starter on the inside. Imagine a pairing of Tremaine Edmunds and OG on the inside, scheme versatility would be limitless.
Player Comp: Robert Mathis

Rd 5 Holton Hill Texas 6-2 200lbs

The former 4 star Corner finds his way to the Monsters of the Midway. A big physical corner with speed and confidence. Holton Hill has unlimited potential as a boundary DB, with 4.4 speed at 6-2 and 200 lbs he fits the mold of the agressive corner needed alongside Kyle Fuller. Both Bears starters at Corner have lengthy injury history. The Bears could bring in this high upside prospect to groom while adding depth. While Hill has red flags, he was suspended by Texas for the final 3 games of the season. The upside is too much to pass up in the 5th round.
Player Comp: Sean Smith

Rd 6 Mark Walton Da U 5-10 188

A Baller PERIOD. Mark Walton has endured on off the greatest tumbles in draft stock in recent memory. Walton has gone Preseason Award Watch and 2nd round projections to missing the season and fear of being undrafted. Coming off a severe injury Walton received bad advice from agents and his circle. Walton should not have run at the combine. Previously projected to showcase homerun speed leading up to the draft Walton failed to outrun the bruising backs at the combine. At 5-10 he is not on the radar for alot of teams. However, the bears who already have one of the best running tandems in the league could allow Walton to Fully rehab before throwing the do-it-all back to the wolves . Walton will provide Pace and company with insurance down the line once the front office and JHoward hit the imminent stalement in contract negotiations. Walton once healthy will give Nagy a new challenge to find touches for the former touchdown magnet.
Player Comp Lamar Miller

Rd 7 Deadrin Senat South Florida 6-0 300lbs
One more big body for camp if he makes it he makes it. Showed he can hold his own against the run.
Player Comp: ?

I would be shocked if Landry is there in the 2nd Round even with concerns about  his size. Pass rush is king in the modern NFL. It gets over drafted.

I truly think if Chubb/Nelson are both on the board at 6, Ballard protects Luck and Chubb falls right into the Bears laps.

TB has a horrendous secondary and just invested heavily on Curry/JPP.

He had 3 2nd round picks for the OL.

We have 2 serious needs. OLB and OG.

They have 2 premium assets left.

I don’t think the math on what they are looking to pick is crazy.

My guess is

1. OLB

2. OG

4. OLB

4. CB

I could see that... there's more depth in this class at OG than there is at OLB, IMO. Hit up OLB at 8, take your OG or OC at #39.

In round 4, you can play around with drafting ILB/OLB/CB/WR

Unless Nelson is there, I just can't see how we don't draft one of: Davenport, Edmunds, Landry. Sam Acho is JAG, Floyd is our future, and Lynch is here as depth and to try and rehab his image. IMO Pace can't wait around until round 2 for a Lorenzo Carter.

I agree Edge is a need GO8, but I don't believe Pace "has to" have one in R1. If Nelson, Chubb and Edmunds are off the board, do you go Davenport or Landry? OR if  Ward drops to us would you go with him? If Im picking the top 7 would be 3 QBs , Barkley, Chubb, Edmunds and Nelson. Who do you pick?

Edmunds isn't a plug and play pass rusher. So there's a good chance Davenport or Landry, or both, are drafted before Edmunds. I think the Bears need Edmunds less than they need Davenport or Landry, but I'm guessing Nelson is the pick...

That would be my top 4 positional picks with every thing being equal, although I'd be more general and say Oline in the second.

I love the idea of doubling up on a specific position in the draft. Almost guaranteed a quality starter. Lean this draft to the defensive side of the ball with the first four picks while adding another key asset to protect Trubisky.

Then take BPA after the fourth round.
