2019 Cap Situation

This was discussed in another thread somewhat but I felt like it deserved its own.  Are we really in a dire cap situation next year?  Lets discuss:

This is every player on the roster next year that will take up $1 mil or more on the roster.  OvertheCap has us projected for $22 mil in cap space, but as someone else pointed out that doesn't take into account Brandon Scherff's 5th year option which will bring us down around $9 mil in cap.  It also doesn't include our draft picks from this year, which will likely eat up the remainder of that $9 mil.  

We can free up quite of bit of space via cuts though.  Here's the most likely cuts:

TE Vernon Davis - $5 mil cap savings (no benefit from post June 1st)

DL Terrell McClain - $3.25 mil cap savings (or $3.437 mil post June 1st)

DL Stacy McGee  - $2.4 mil cap savings (or $4.0 mil post June 1st)

CB Orlando Scandrick - $3.75 mil savings (no benefit from post June 1st)

So that's $14.4 mil savings from fairly obvious cuts.  I'd add that McGee is an obvious choice to designate as a post June 1st cut, so savings would likely be $16 mil.  

 

There's there's the debatable cuts:

CB Josh Norman - $8.5 mil cap savings (or $13.937 mil post June 1st)

TE Jordan Reed - $4.743 mil cap savings (or $8.343 mil post June 1st)

MLB Mason Foster - $906k (or $1.156 mil post June 1st)

 

Cutting Mason Foster doesn't make a lot of sense because he'll barely save us any cap over any replacement we get for him.  Cutting Norman as a designated June 1st cut saves us the most cap, but I'd have to think a player of his caliber could be traded.  Trading Norman next year before the draft would save us approximately $8 mil in cap. If we were to cut Jordan Reed, he's the most likely to receive the 2nd designation for post June 1st. 

Trading Norman and cutting Reed (designated post June 1st) could net us another $16 mil in cap savings.  So that combined with the players I listed above is $32 mil in cap space we can free up pretty easily.  

There are downsides of course.  We'd be losing our #1 CB.  Also, Cutting Reed and Davis in the same year would leave us with practically nothing at TE.  We would have two full drafts (2018 & 2019) to fill these needs though.  

So if you look at the best way for us to free up cap next year, you can see that DL depth, CB, and TE are needs that should be considered in this year's draft.

I really want to see how Moreau does this year, also been hearing a lot of good things about holsey. If they come in a ball out and we take a corner in the top 2 rounds either this year or next year I may be comfortable trading Norman. Also the best way to help your cornerback play is to get pressure on the quarterback. If we can upgrade the front 7 that would also help with losing Norman 

 

the biggest thing that kills me is that the Alex Smith trade could have made our cap situation worse... and here’s why

Fuller could have eventually lowered the blow of trading or cutting Norman due to his play, rookie contract, and depth we had with him.

also instead of rolling with a 1 year Vet or Colt Mccoy and drafting a rookie, we are now tied to Alex smith for 4 years over 20 mil per year, rather than getting a young guy on a rookie contract and a 1 year rental.

smith getting that 20 next year but add the 13 mil post June 1st savings from cutting or trading Norman and that’s 33 mil we could of had next year just by drafting a QB, I would of been way more comfortable doing that. Rudolph, Jackson, Lauretta, White all guys we could have gotten

 

if reed is healthy this year which I doubt we could eventually cut Davis and save another 5 mil making it 38 mil in space. Or. I’ve versa cut ties with reed and have 39 mil

 

i haven’t been a fan of this off-season to be honest. I will still root hard like I always do for us but I really think we screwed the pooch on the smith trade.

Sure if Moreau and Hosley improve greatly this season it makes Norman expendable. The more likely situation is they’ll improve somewhat. This time next year Norman will be pushing 32 years old. It’ll probably be time to rework his deal anyway. If he don’t agree I’d be fine moving on

I’d also call this year make or break for Reed. At his price it’s time for him to play 16 games and walk to a pro bowl. Hope the pedicure worked out for him

The salary cap for next year will likely go up $10 to $15 million again so that turns that $22 million into $32 million plus in cap space. 

I don’t see Norman getting cut unless he has a down year - which I hope isn’t true - or if Morea/Dunbar really look amazing opposite him this year. Which, is possible but remains to be seen. 

I think it’s very likely that this will be McClain and McGee’s last year in DC, and if we draft a DL early in the draft, one of them likely won’t make the roster this year.

I don’t see Reed being cut/traded unless he has a season like he had last year, which I hope doesn’t happen. I hope the surgery on Reed’s toes help him and he fully recovers to be 100% and he stays near 100% all season and has a season similar to what he had in 2015 with over 80 receptions and over 10 TDs.

As for Brandon Scherff, I think we re-sign him to a long term deal and his cap hit for 2019 is $3 or $4 million less than his $9 million cap hit would be on his 5th year option. 

Its also very likely that Scandrick is only a one-year player for us as Dunbar/Moreau/Holsey insurance. If 2 of those young corners or all 3 of them take steps in their development this season it’s very likely that Scandrick is only on our roster for one season.

Lastly, given the make up of our current roster and what should be our roster in 2019 what holes do we have? And can’t those holes be filled in this draft and the 2019 draft?

I don’t see a need for us to be major players in the 2019 Free Agency period other than re-signing our own free agents.

Norman is still going to be the 2nd  highest paid player on the team this year and next, so while he’s more affordable than he was in 2017, he’s still not exactly affordable. What happens with Norman’s future has a lot to do with the development of our young corners and if we draft another young corner who becomes a good player. 

IMO with Breeland and Fuller now gone, I think it’s much more likely that Norman plays out his entire contract for the Redskins than I thought before Fuller was traded away and Breeland wasn’t re-signed.

we need norman now more then over. Redskins have successfully made one of our strongest positions one of the weakest lol. jesus our franchise is ran SO BAD

Well, if you read what I wrote, I actually said my position on Norman has changed and we should keep him. That being said, he’s not affordable because he’s still costing us $14 million the next two seasons, that’s not affordable, he’s  still expensive. 

Also, our corner position isn’t weak. We have Norman, Dunbar, Moreau and now Scandrick. Scandrick has shown in the past to be a good starting corner and a good slot corner. Dunbar is currently about equal to what Breeland was the last two years and he has better hands, Moreau has the highest potential of any of our corners. 

The corner we’ll miss the most is Fuller but I think it’s a clear overreaction to say corner is one of our weakest positions now. Moreau has a lot of ability and potential, people are sleeping on him and Dunny played just as well as Bree did the last two seasons. Dunny also is a former WR and has good hands which should lead to more ints from our corners which is greatly needed.

Scandrick isn’t horrible, he’s just battled injuries the last two year. This forum seems to have amnesia because the way you all doubt Moreau and Dunbar is the same way you doubted Bree and Fuller before they became good corners in their second years. He’s not, he battled injuries the last few years. You clearly aren’t reading what I’m writing. Look at how he played before that. If Scandrick isn’t injured it’s widely known he’s a good corner, he was the Cowboys best corner for a few years before he got hurt in 2013 and 14. Hopefully he stays healthy for us this year, if not, I fully expect Moreau to look good as he develops and Dunny to look even better than he did last year when he had to start for Norman.

so you are referring to his years of 2012 and before? lmao its 2018 man!!!!!!!!!
