So sad. I hope he can come back and be ready for next year. I watched it happen last night and it sickened me. He was starting to play better. I wish him a speedy recovery.

At least it’s just a hairline fracture, and nothing like Gordon Hayward, Dak or Kyle Allen had. They said in the ESPN article that he should be back in 12 weeks aka four months and if so, he’ll be ready for the regular season when it starts in October.

”Wizards center Daniel Gafford said. "You never know what is going to happen. Seeing him down on the floor as long as that, I felt his pain. I understand it's going to be a long road to recovery, but with the trainers that we got, he's in good hands.

"It's a tough blow for him right now, because I am pretty sure he is going to be out for a good amount of time. It's real tough. An ankle injury is one of the worst injuries, to me, because I have been through that."

"Two things about Deni I love: He cares a lot and he works extremely hard," Wizards coach Scott Brooks said. "And those are two characteristics that we want our program to be about. Has he had an up-and-down year, absolutely. You look at all the great rookies, the MVPs in the league, look at their rookie year, it's no different. Sometimes, we put too much pressure on these players to be 27-year-olds right away.

"Deni cares, he works hard, is an outstanding kid and we are lucky to have him on our team. We are going to keep getting him better."

Let's just project a bit here and say that everyone in the East wins at their current 10 game rate. Obviously, this won't be perfect since teams will be playing each other, so they won't be able to maintain all of these rates. Still, it's a simple model and arguably the best case scenario for Washington:

Team Current W Current L Last 10 W Current % Proj W Proj L Proj % Proj Rk Rk Change % Change
Brooklyn 40 20 6 0.667 47 25 0.653 1 0 -0.014
Philadelphia 39 21 5 0.650 45 27 0.625 2 0 -0.025
Milwaukee 37 22 5 0.627 44 28 0.611 3 0 -0.016
New York 34 27 9 0.557 44 28 0.611 4 0 0.054
Atlanta 33 27 7 0.550 41 31 0.569 5 0 0.019
Boston 32 28 7 0.533 40 32 0.556 6 0 0.022
Miami 32 29 6 0.525 39 33 0.542 7 0 0.017
Washington 26 33 9 0.441 38 34 0.528 8 2 0.087
Indiana 28 31 6 0.475 36 36 0.500 9 0 0.025
Charlotte 29 30 4 0.492 34 38 0.472 10 -2 -0.019
Toronto 25 35 5 0.417 31 41 0.431 11 1 0.014
Chicago 25 35 3 0.417 29 43 0.403 12 -1 -0.014
Cleveland 21 38 4 0.356 26 46 0.361 13 0 0.005
Detroit 18 43 3 0.295 21 51 0.292 14 1 -0.003
Orlando 18 41 1 0.305 19 53 0.264 15 -1 -0.041

So, if we assume that everyone carries on at their current rate, Washington jumps up from the ten seed to ... the eight seed. The good news in this scenario for them is that they would be guaranteed to get two bites of the apple to make the playoffs. The bad news for them is that they would win the right to play either the Nets (2-1 on the season) or the 76ers (0-3).

The other scenario is that they lose one of those games, and thus they made a heroic late season run only to come up short and tank their draft position.

How utterly Washington sports teams.

Culture has changed. More accountability. More intensity. Defense has stepped up. Thank you Russ.

Meanwhile, the Rockets have the worst record in the NBA. John Wall will be out the rest of the year and will require knee surgery in the off-season. Rockets GM just stepped down too.

Tommy Shepherd GM of the year? Toss in the Gafford pickup too.

Don't get me wrong, this nice win streak will propel them (potentially) into a first round L and a crappy draft pick (most likely).

I have no idea how to read that. I take it we’re good given the fact that you posted it.

That’s nice, seems too little too late. I wish we had that starting in January but I guess Westbrook not playing every night & COVID hurt the team chemistry then.

Beal brings that up a lot in interviews that he felt they started to get things together in January but then they had Covid hit them. I think there was 2 weeks where they didn’t even practice and remember they had all those guys out? They couldn’t even field a team for a game or two.

How about Kevin Porter, Jr? 50 pts last night! Damn, another guy I wish we had taken a flier on! It’d be great to have him as Beal’s back up & we could even go w/ a 3 guard line up a lot of Russ, Porter & Beal.

Ah well! But damn it sucks to not have a guy like that who’s 20 with such a bright future.

They had 50 assists as a team. Amazing game. If Russ can ply like this the rest of his time here being mostly a facilitator and not taking as many bad shots, they’re going to get better and better over the next few years.
