They are LONG and slow/tedious at points. The majority of people that are into the show are just in it for the gore/boobs. Now days I am finding more and more it takes a certain type of someone to invest in literature outside of a 50 shades or Harry Potter novel. And happy shocking endings. Lets not forget those. Books 1-3 were lit though. Think I read all three in a month or something like that. Yeah, AFFC was definitely the most poorly written of the series. Really heavy handed. The drop in quality in the last two books, along with the delay in book 6 and Martin admitting that he's struggling to write it really makes me worry that he's has lost interest in the series and will never finish it. Maybe not even just book 6.

Maybe not even just book 6. Yeah I think he lost interest, maybe even ran out of ideas. It takes ages to write books as big as he writes. Years. Perhaps he doesn’t want to spend such valuable time on it, although that’d be a big insult to all of his fans.

Maybe not even just book 6. AFFC and DOD were supposed to be one book. He then got to the two battles that were looming (Meereen and the wall) and realized that the book was literally too big to be bound together. He was then forced to split the (incomplete) book in two. Thats why AFFC is so freaking boring, he had to lump all of those characters together otherwise none of it would make sense. I didnt reread AFFC for a long time, but eventually I went back to it after 3 times through DOD, and the events of DOD make AFFC much more interesting. They provide a lot of context for cersei's POV chapters (cersei and danny are the two worst characters imo). I agree, the worst book BY FAR. I said a couple of pages ago that I thought he would finish the whole series, then release all remaining books in quick succession. I still have some hope for that happening lol If we dont get a book announcement immediately after the finale of that godforsaken show, then I will officially give up hope and move onto a different story. I havent been able to get past this series until I get to the end lol been going in circles for years. ITS TIME

The symbolism is extremely heavy handed, through most of the book (I mean, how many times does he drop the line "feast for crows" in there? Like a hundred?), and there are too many one-off POVs that don't really go anywhere. It's been a couple years now since I read it, and I remember being annoyed with a few more details, but those are the ones I can recall. ADOD was better written, but both books suffered from the split. I think one problem in the both of them, and one of the reason's he's struggling to finish WOW is bloat. He let things get out of control, which is easy with so many storylines, and now it's 10 times the work to finish than it was. As a result, he loses interest, and the quality suffers. THE DUKE
AFFC definitely improves once you have the context from ADWD to go with it. I enjoyed it much more my second read through. Brienne's chapter with The Broken Man was one of my favorite chapters in the series.
JBURGE
I've only read them through once, so that's interesting that AFFC is better the second time through. I was planning on reading them again before the next book comes out, but I need a 6 month warning because I can see myself dragging myself through the last 2 again. ASOS is definitely one of my favourite few books ever

I'm guessing a fair amount, especially once (if) the next book ever comes out. People are gonna want a much more satisfying ending than we're seeing play out in the show. I actually started reading them before season 7 because of how much I love the show. Finished the 2nd one before this season started and going to finish the rest after the series is over. First one went by surprisingly fast for someone who has never read a book on their own time. Second one took me a while though.

You'll fly through the 3rd book, but the 4th book is a bit of a slog to get through, and this coming from a guy who reads very fast. When I got to the Red Wedding in the book, I literally put the book down and didn't look at it for a week, it hit me that hard. No other book has done that to me. When i'm into a book (especially reading it for the first time) i'm laser focused on getting it done. I had no idea it was coming because I read nothing about any of the books before I started reading them. I binged season 1 right after it aired the season 1 finale and got through the 5 books in less than 2 weeks.
N4L
GRRM came out and shot down the rumor that the Barriston actor was floating out there about being done with one book, let alone both books. The actor that plays barriston needs to be tarred and feathered for floating that out there. Its been a nice run George, but now, my watch has ended. THE DUKE
I'm in the camp that I don't think book 7 ever comes out, and I won't be shocked if we never get book 6.

Doesn't he have another writer in line to finish if he passes away? I remember hearing about that a few years ago. I think it was Brandon Sanderson, but I could be wrong. In any case, I'm sure that doesn't help his motivation if he's already made the outline and figures he can let someone else do the menial work of fleshing it out into a quality product. That was Robert Jordan. I’m pretty sure George said if he doesn’t finish his work he doesn’t want anyone to finish it
