If they have super bowl aspirations, why does the extra mid round pick matter. Do the Packers have anyone who can play Safety? I can't imagine McCarthey would have been on board if his job is on the line, perhaps it's not.

Agreed...and it doesn't make their defense any better.

The one thing I might be able to say is that with all these trades amongst the teams we're in competition with (Wash, GB, Rams, Lions, Eagles, Saints), I think it only bodes well for the Vikings, because in-season moves don't often work out all that well...and tend to create more significant problems than resolves them.

Weird decision to trade HHCD if the Packers are still aiming for the playoffs.

He's been good in coverage. PFF grades him the 4th best safety in the league, though some of that's helped by scheme. Tackling has been the weakest part of his game the last couple of years.

The Packers safeties have been a weak spot all year, but HHCD was easily the better of the two -- Brice has struggled in deep coverage (he got burned on Diggs long TD, and on the long TD in the Niners game) and he's not a reliable tackler either.

Their other options at safety don't inspire confidence. Josh Jones is more of a hybrid S/LB. He's athletic but not great in coverage, especially deep. The fact that Brice has been playing ahead of him is a bad sign. Beyond that, they have a UDFA (Whitehead) and a couple of slow corners with good ball skills (Tramon Williams, who's ancient, and the rookie Josh Jackson).

The good news for GB's secondary is that their corners have been solid: Kevin King has been half-decent and the rookie Jaire Alexander has been amazing. Alexander and King, plus Kenny Clark (who's been dominant) and Blake Martinez (who's still improving) is a solid foundation for what might eventually be an excellent defense, assuming they manage to find an effective edge rusher or two.

it's as if they have personnel and coach schisms going on or something...

It's my understanding that Clinton-Dix was moving after his contract expired this season, so they are basically getting something for him now, rather than let him walk for nothing after the season.

Yup, but that doesn't help them this year, and they are a legit playoff team......at some point, you have to try to win while Rodgers is healthy. I doubt next year's 4th is going to help this year, and losing a starter should hurt....it might not help next year either.

Some of the things they needed to happen to contend have happened. Graham and the young WRs have opened up the passing game (though their improvement is diluted relative to the league as everyone's moving the ball easily through the air this year). The OL has been OK with Bulaga hanging in there injury-wise. Aaron Jones is a good RB. The defense has some young blue chip players (Alexander now in addition to Clark and arguably King and/or Martinez).

Their roster still has some limitations. They don't have a plus edge rusher (highest total of pressures from their edge rushers is 11 by Perry and Gilbert, tied for 75th in the league at the position and 5 pressures fewer than Weatherly). With Wilkerson done for the year, their DL depth is thin -- Clark is playing 85% of snaps. Their guards are mediocre. They just traded away their only good safety.

Having said that, they'd match up well in the playoffs against a lot of teams. Against for instance the Saints -- GB has a very good run defense, tight coverage on the outside including 2 athletic outside corners who can hold up against Thomas, not much pass rush but doesn't matter since Brees throws so quickly anyway, and then Rodgers able to challenge their secondary deep with his tackles giving him enough time.  As long as they have Rodgers the Packers are never out of a game. They'll always have a chance if they make the playoffs.

To get to the playoffs, GB probably needs to finish at least 6-3 (to end up 9-6-1), which means winning all the easy games (Miami and Arizona at home, at the Jets) and at least 3 of the 6 harder ones (Atlanta and Detroit at home, and on the road at New England, Seattle, Minnesota, and Chicago).

Emerging from a Week Seven bye, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers fully participated in each practice preceding the game against the Rams. With a Week Nine showdown looming against the Patriots, Rodgers was once again affected by the injury he suffered during the season opener.

Rodgers was limited in practice on Wednesday, due to the knee injury sustained in the first half of the game against the Bears.

Bill Belichick loved what Jaire Alexander did before he got to the NFL. Belichick said the Patriots were very high on Alexander coming out of Louisville, and if the Packers hadn’t taken him with the 18th overall pick, the Patriots might have taken him with the 23rd overall pick.

Belichick: “He’s going to have a great career. Thought it was an excellent pick. It was a little bit ahead of where we were picking. One of the top players on the board. Great kid. Great energy. I think he’ll be one of the top corners in the league for quite a while now.”

Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine asked Tramon Williams to be part of the plan to replace Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at safety. Williams told reporters he will play safety Sunday against the Patriots but also could see some action at corner.

Williams played in the slot last week against the Rams, playing all 78 snaps. The move inside by Williams allowed rookie Jaire Alexander also to play all 78 snaps as an outside corner. Kevin King is the team’s other starting corner.

Green Bay announced on Saturday the acquisition of P Drew Kaser, a 2016 sixth-round pick of the Chargers, L.A.’s “B” team cut Kaser on October 3. Here’s where it gets odd: Packers punter JK Scott is, by all appearances, fine. He’s not listed on the injury report, and there’s no reason to think he won’t be able to play on Sunday night in New England. The Packers drafted Scott out of Alabama this year, using a fifth-round pick.

Presumably, one of the two punters will be inactive on Sunday night. Unless the Packers have cooked up some sort of two-punter formation.
