Jones was a second-round pick in 2017 and played 29 games for the team over the last two seasons. He started 12 of those games and recorded 126 tackles, three sacks and an interception. He will be subject to waivers and will become a free agent if the other 31 teams pass on the chance to claim him.

Somebody will certainly claim him.

Packers let him go even though they have no depth at ILB or S. No one picked him up even though rosters are at 90 and there'd be no effect on the cap.

Amazing.

That is quite shocking, especially considering he's still on his rookie deal.

Amazing.

Jones made it clear he wasn't happy being in Green Bay, and if kept would have caused personnel problems.

I know, it's just notable that they couldn't find a role for him given how thin they are at LB and S. It's almost like the new coaches and GM are cleaning house, or rebuilding or something.

Also a bit of a surprise that no one around the league wanted to give Jones another chance on his rookie deal. Now he'll be a street FA and probably sign somewhere for vet minimum. Big loss of draft capital from just 2 years ago -- would be the equivalent of (late 2nd round pick) Brian O'Neill passing through waivers unclaimed at this time next year.

He's not the first player to feel better once leaving Green Bay, but he's the only one to have actually expressed displeasure while still there.  But, there's also speculation about a medical issue which is why he went unclaimed.  Apparently, the Packers had released him with a non-football illness designation.

He might eventually sign for vet minimum somewhere, but I can't imagine his rookie contract salary was that much above vet minimum. It seems that a team that wanted him would have just claimed him and taken on the rookie contract. I would have to look into his actual contract details to know how much he was getting over minimum but if no team has space for him when they have 90 guys on the roster it is hard to imagine a team finding space for them when they cut down to 53, even as vet minimum.

No matter what this season holds for Jones, it has been a long and hard fall for him to get to the current point of being cut and going unclaimed. Hopefully he learns something from the experience.

Jones had no problem with GB. His problems stemmed from wanting to play safety when his best position is at ILB. Packers have 3 safeties now that they really like in Amos, Savage, and Greene so there wasn't really any room for him there nor is he talented enough to play that position at the NFL linebacker.

I assume he will change his tune or he is going to find himself without a job.

O'Neill was drafted in a similar slot (#62 instead of #61, a year later). 3rd year of his rookie deal will be $880K. Vet minimum in 3rd year is more like $550K.

I don't mean the difference in salary should've been enough to stop teams from claiming Jones but the difference is still a significant blow to him given what he would've earned on his rookie deal.

The lack of interest across the league shows a major loss in value for Jones as a prospect/player, and for the Packers in terms of the draft capital they invested in him just 2 years ago.

Reggie Gilbert (3rd string OLB/edge rusher, who's been more effective this preseason than Fackrell and Gary, their 2nd string) was traded to the Titans for a 7th round pick.

Don't call it a rebuild...

It's certainly a defensive rebuild if anything.  We'll have to wait and see if who they replaced those 9 with are any better though.

Our defense hasn't been good enough over the last 8 years to call it a rebuild.

We are in a build.
