Jaguars owner Shad Khan may become the new owner of Wembley Stadium

Recommended Posts

They will soon be the Jacksonville/London jaguars and have quite a big advantage. Imagine if they committed to playing one game every year in London. They would be the home town favorites there and benefit from the crowd noise. However since they technically are not home in London it likely would alternate between being scheduled as home/away game. Jags get essentially 8 home games one year and 9 the following year.

We’ve played there every year since 2013. It’s been a home game every year, and is scheduled to be a home game through 2021.

I doubt it changes when it gets renewed as well. The home team revenue from the game is the reason the team does the game in the first place.

Doubt this means the Jaguars move. Even if Khan wanted to the league would probably step in and block the move.

If Khan wants to move out of Jacksonville, he's taking a god* awful approach in showing it with trying to revamp downtown JAX.

Gotta keep the alliteration. The London Leopards.

But the are dog-friendly now...  British Bulldogs.

This is a good point. That one game in London helps us in a small market quite a bit.

That's a weak excuse.  While Whembley Stadium is the most used stadium for NFL games in London, the NFL has used 2 other stadiums.  NFL agreed to play 2 game per year to 2027 in Tottenham.  Whembley's contract goes until 2020, but even if Whembley is no longer an option, there are stadiums in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Germany lining up to host.

We've already built a fanbase in London. We've played there for the past 5 years and have continued to grow our brand.

That isn't the only reason he bought it. He's a business man and this was a great opportunity at a historic stadium. This is just one positive for the Jaguars to stay in Jacksonville.

Dude, the reason Wembley is so beneficial to the Jags is because of the revenue from being able to fill a stadium with 90,000 fans. Why would they want to play in Tottenham’s stadium with 36,000 seats?

Tottenham's stadium crowds averaged 74K for NFL games.  Wembley is 84K.  I'm not dismissing Wembley, I'm dismissing that this will impact games played in London.  New owners "might" not want to partner with the NFL or "might" have less scheduling flexibility are not reasons to buy a stadium.

Tottenham’s stadium has never hosted an NFL game. You’re referring to Twickenham Stadium, which did such a terrible job this past year with their two games that the NFL did’t want to use them going forward, instead opting to go with Tottenham’s new stadium.

I made a mistake with the total seats. The 36,000 is for the stadium that was demolished for the one they’re building. The new stadium holds 62,000; less than 75% the capacity of Wembley. The Jags would lose about $2.5M per game by playing at Tottenham’s stadium. This on top of the ownership revenue the team will get from hosting those games.

Buying Wembley allows Shad to guarantee other teams can’t steal the Wembley series from him, and guarantees that the Jags will continue to play in the biggest stadium in Europe for those games.

Somehow buying Wembley for $600 million to save $2.5 million per game sounds like the return on investment can take some time...

Because that's all he'll make from owning Wembley...
