1.13 (13) Washington Redskins select Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama

It's a solid, safe pick. NFL.com had him graded at a 6.51 (6.50 - 6.99: "Chance to become Pro Bowl-caliber player"), but Edmunds graded out as 7.17 (7.00-7.49: "Pro Bowl-caliber player").

Payne was a safe pick. Edmunds was a bigger risk, but possibly bigger reward.

I’ve watched every play of Edmunds career. I just don’t see how he grades out so high? Really good player but man I thought he made a lot of mistakes.

What I dont like about him. He gets driven back frequently on run plays. The good thing is he knows how to shed those blocks and make plays. Has tremendous balance doing so. But it always seems to be at a sacrifice of a couple yards. My concern, if hes driven back by the worst of college teams a couple yards during a run, will that add a yard when against NFL talented lines.

Solid player overall. Hes going to be around for a decade which is great. I like his disruption and how it seems he opens gaps for LBs in the pass game. Hes athletic and has a great motor to where hes going to be strong late in games. But didnt see him as a top 20 pick.

Overall. B

I can’t imagine hating this pick after getting ran all over by literally everyone last year. Just blows my mind people are upset with this pick.

Do not misunderstand me. I am not hating on the pick. It's a solid safe B+ pick.

But not Edmunds and not going for the New Orleans trade (yes, I do believe it was offered to the Redskins), those were bigger moves for the franchise's long term growth.

Payne is likely going to be a good player and teaming him up with Allen is a wonderful thing.

It's a good pick that fills a huge need. The biggest positive from it is the chemistry between Allen and Payne. Should help the progression along faster. Good pick, doesn't always have to be flashy

With Allen playing. We were 8th against the run. When he was out, we were dead last. Payne is not a run specialist, hes OK in the run. Its Allen thats great for run stop.

I dont see anyone being upset with the pick. I stated facts that are plain to see on any film you watch on him. A decade with he and Allen in the middle is something to really look forward too. Its a 1-2 punch that can hold up against the run, and heavily disrupt the pass. Whats not to like?

1. If we chose not to accept the saints offer to move back and their number 1 next year

2. Vea was the perfect pick but we were one pick short

3. Payne is perfect to team with Allen as DT’s in a 4/3. He’s not an ideal NT for a number of reasons mainly because he’s a penetrating DT not a two gap player. Brown has to be rolling his eyes because he’s taking on unblocked guards again

now if we finally go to a base 4/3 on first and second downs we maximize both Allen and Payne. Kerrigan is and was always better as a hand in the dirt DE. Maybe Nancy will be better at DE too that way we have a rotation of Allen, The Greek and Payne at DT and Kerrigan, Nancy Lanier and McPhee at DE. Please don’t try to advocate for Taylor, McClain or McGee or Francis as anything more than depth or say how we are already a 4/3 Team “most of the time” because good teams aren’t indecisive about their identity among other reasons.

Its a solid pick, we could have done something stupid, but we made a good pick but let’s not over sell it as a great pick.

I really hope we stop being so stubborn scheme wise on first and second down defense.
