Do not misunderstand me. I am not hating on the pick. It's a solid safe B+ pick.

But not Edmunds and not going for the New Orleans trade (yes, I do believe it was offered to the Redskins), those were bigger moves for the franchise's long term growth.

Payne is likely going to be a good player and teaming him up with Allen is a wonderful thing.

I’m glad we didn’t go for Edmonds over Allen. Edmonds is very young but he seems kind of soft as a LB and not nearly as instinctive as Smith. Great athlete who may grow into his gifts and Buffalo coach perfect for him

With Allen playing. We were 8th against the run. When he was out, we were dead last. Payne is not a run specialist, hes OK in the run. Its Allen thats great for run stop.

I dont see anyone being upset with the pick. I stated facts that are plain to see on any film you watch on him. A decade with he and Allen in the middle is something to really look forward too. Its a 1-2 punch that can hold up against the run, and heavily disrupt the pass. Whats not to like?

Sorry guys. I was referring to the absolute meltdown outside of here. Hogs haven and Twitter is upset we didn’t take Derwin James. I liked James a lot too. Still think this was the right pick. Kind of like taking Trent Williams over Eric Berry.

I can’t imagine hating this pick after getting ran all over by literally everyone last year. Just blows my mind people are upset with this pick.

Remember though, when Allen and Ioannides were healthy we were shutting down the run

If we were gonna take Payne, 13 was too high. I also most likely wouldve gone James at 13. Or taken the Saints offer. I love Payne. Just not that high

He’s the guy the team wanted, if we had traded down we may have missed on him, Edmunds and James. That would’ve been an awful scenario.

I dunno, our glaring embarrassment just became a possible strong point.  That is what first round picks are supposed to do right?  Vea would have been an exclamation point on that though.  The hair is just glorious.

Right. So with them back healthy, I almost expected (and sometimes wanted) the F.O. to go a different direction.

Still,love Payne so I'm happy

But Payne makes the interior DL much stronger, unless you want Ziggy Hold starting again?

Complaining because you think some imaginary trade down was offered or you think Payne was someone who should have went 5 picks later is as ridiculous as continuing to complain that BRandon was taken 5th and he’s a pro bowl OL.

You honestly believe that New Orleans didn't offer something similar (if not that exact deal) to the Redskins?

Look, both @Thaiphoon and I have said we like the pick. However, we both feel like they could have gotten more value out of the pick.

Even if we assume that Payne wasn't going to be available when the Redskins picked again (which the Packers showed wasn't necessarily the case since they bounced back up), is Payne (at 13) worth more than 147 (5.10), a 2019 1st, and Taven Bryan (who was available at 27)? Is he that much better of a player? I dunno, but that's an awful lot of value to leave on the table.

The Redskins went for the safe pick. That's fine. Payne looks to be a good prospect that helps fill a major need for the team. But the lack of imagination, vision, and planning for this franchise may have prevented the Redskins from making a larger move. Let's celebrate the addition of Payne while recognizing that the front office may have missed a major opportunity.
