He doesn't have much of anything left.  Antonio, might be time to just hang it up...

It would actually be kind of nice if he did.  Then we would have two first ballot locks for the Hall of Fame being enshrined in the same group.  It was nice to see Randy Moss and T.O. go in at the same time, and it would be nice to have Gates and Witten go in together too.

If anything it would keep Witten out an extra year. HOF has never been kind to TEs, have a hard time seeing them induct 2 TEs in their 1st year if eligibility at the same time.

It’s a tough argument for sure. Antonio Gates versus Kellen Winslow. Dude was so good his son had a hype train entering the league.

K2 was great with us. He set all kinds of TE records in the three years he was here. Unfortunately his body couldn't hold up. He couldn't practice half the time. But he still managed to play all 48 games.

I bet he makes someone else 53 this year

Or he can take a page out of Brent Celeks book and understand reality ,"it's time to retire"?

Being a future HOF has no bearing on the Chargers making the right decision. Teams have done this (release, cut, not resign HOF) dozens of times before.

Great career, alltime Charger Great, gotta go! Simple as that.

Because they were giving him targets and snaps that Hunter Henry would benefit from.  Henry shouldn’t be taking any less targets or snaps because of 2017-version Gates.  And the Chargers benefit from using him more instead of Gates.

This.  At some point you have to rip the band-aid off and as long as Gates is on the field, he's going to be Rivers' primary or secondary read just out of sheer habit.  And, not that there should really be huge doubts about Henry, but better to pull that band-aid off now than wait until he's in a contract year in 2019.

Denver should at least bring him to camp, got no veteran TE on the roster. Plus it would be a second year in a row we sign a franchise legend from one of our rivals.

Given how the last experiment went with a guy well past his prime from a rival went with us (JC), easy pass.    Similar result coming.

I have nothing but respect for the guy, top 5 overall TE of all time, but when it's time to go, it's time to go.   If there wasn't a TD record at stake, that time would have been before 2017.

If this is the end for Gates, bravo on one hell of a career. After he broke out everyone was looking for the next Gates or Gonzales as a guy who can transition from the hardwood to the gridiron, leading to guys like Jimmy Graham, Jordan Cameron, Julius Thomas, and a lot of other guys getting drafted higher than their statistics in college probably deserved. A special athlete and a guy who from all accounts is a great human as well.
