Nrc wasn't released.  He was a real life free agent

Not quite accurate. The Rams declined his option. If there were an expansion draft, he would have been in it.

You also couldn't get three players from one team as after you pick one they pull one back

That's not true. Teams have the option to pull players back or leave them in the draft. If they want to dump contracts, they can choose to leave them in the draft.

Very smart move to keep trading back and accruing extra picks for next year. If I had paid closer attention to trades, I would have been motivated to do the same. Good job on the draft! I thought about tanking for Lawrence and not drafting Burrow, but I decided it was too risky. Had Miami offered four firsts plus some other picks for Burrow, I might well have done it.

I'm not 100% sure it will be Losing for Lawrence. It might be Failing for Fields, or something completely different.

I just remember the beatings that David Carr and Tim Couch took and the effect the beatings had. Greg Cook didn't last long enough for me to remember him, but I do remember Randy Johnson. So no, I don't believe in picking a quarterback before at least starting your offensive line.

I think Miami asked Cincy, "Would you take #3 and #5?" and were told "Don't bother." We hates Cincy forever! I'd have Wills and Simmons. Give me 5, 18 and some more, I'd have Wills and either Justin Jefferson or Patrick Queen, and some more. So we hates Cincy forever.

Now if you are trying to Win the Simulation (and I am not accusing anyone of that) it is very smart to pick Burrow, cuz Cincy has significant talent around Burrow. But in the fantasy world in my head (as opposed to fantasy football) Burrow as the first pick never reaches his potential, grows bitter and suicidal, and leaves "Laces out, Techbert" messages scribbled on the walls of his shack decades from now.

Here's the three reasons to trade down every chance you get as an expansion team.

1. You need more players than everyone else. Duh.

2. You are less interested in the here and now and more interested in building for the future. So if you get a 4th rd pick next year for a 5th rd pick this year you get (on average) better players. Since you do not have any performance deadlines yet, there is no inherent advantage to a player this year compared to next year. So there is no discount of a round per year to the pick value for an expansion team.

3. Stay with me on this. With the double number of picks the first two drafts, there is real value in leveling out the number of picks by pushing them out to future years. So you have 14 picks for 2020, you have 14 picks minus slight attrition as rookies, plus the udfa's. That many rookies will get themselves killed plus the veteran players around them. As you trade down, this just becomes worse. After year two, you have 28 picks  minus slightly higher attrition plus the udfa's as first and second year players, which get more people killed as you will be playing a ton of young players no matter how you construct your roster. Or you totally waste the double pick years. That's one thing. Another is come 2024, you have a huge class of free agents you have to sign or lose. Same for 2025. That is going to shock your team's roster construction, when you are finally starting to be good. So you combat this by pushing out picks.  Turn 2020 draft choices into 2021 choices, and more importantly turn 2021 draft choices into 2022 choices. In Corona virus lingo, you are flattening the curve.

It is not hard at all to have 20 rookies your first season. It is not hard at all to have 20 rookies your second season and 16 second year players. I've done it. That only leaves about 17 veterans for year 2. On a whole team.

Now, I did not want to lose Shane Lemieux og. I had real plans for him. But I did not hesitate to flip him for a future 4th. Even if he was worth a 4th to me, and he probably was, the right thing is still to trade him. So yeah, I watch the trade tracker almost as closely as the draft tracker, and with the poor performance of the official sites this year, it was very frustrating.

Strategy:

I targeted position Groups. Most important to me were the foundational positions, and the positions that take time to develop.

1) OL. Takes time to develop and gel together. Got 3, and I expect 3 starters by year 3. Got 2 tackles and 1 center, and guards are easier to find, so that's good. I wanted an og, but could not quite reach. I never made Niang happen but came close, and I traded away my chance at Lemieux. At OT, I wanted Peart, but shocked he went round 3. He's not that good! I expected to get him around 6 and coddle him a while. I also wanted Charles and Bartch but did not prioritize after I had two already. Toyed with Heck, but not seriously. Was serious with the Prince, but was could not quite get him late. Injury had to be the only reason he fell so far. Overall, happy, but wish I had a guard and maybe another center, and a developmental LOT candidate.

2) WR. Takes time to develop, and this class was stacked. Got 2, 1 high and 1 Day 3. They went faster than I calculated and I could also never create any extra day 2 picks via trade. I really wanted Mims and that sexy 6.66 3-cone, but I thought Dallas would take Cushenberry @51. Wrong, I was. I don't ever regret decisions, cuz no point, but if I had a copy of tomorrow's newspaper, I would have gone Higgins/Mims/Jones/Cushenberry. I actually never expected to keep Higgins, since early 2nd round is usually filled with trades. Instead I expected to have a comparable receiver plus a third round pick. Happy with AGG and his potential, but he is far from a sure thing. I wanted Tyler Johnson, but I kept rolling the dice instead of picking him and he went a round earlier than I expected. I almost picked Isaiah Hodgins but never quite did it.  Overall, I give myself poor marks in pick management for this position. I should have come out of the draft with 1 more sure thing and 1 more development/underrated player.

3) TE. Takes a really long time to develop, and you can find Day 3 gems. Didn't pan out, as I was left with essentially a priority walk-on. Only had a few I was seriously looking at. I was not well prepared for the bottom of the TE barrel, and that was my fault. I don't think this was the year to draft a couple of tight ends anyway.

4) S. I really like the idea of drafting safeties late and give them a few years on special teams while they work out their pursuit angles, but it never seems to work for me, not really since Darian Stewart and Barry Church a long time ago. Again, only got a priority walk-on.  There were some good ones I liked early, but decided not to use a Day 2 pick on any.

5) DL. I believe you should get your DL's on Days 1 and 2, or don't really bother. Gallimore was late Day 2, and I think he will become a starter in a year or so. Lynch and Strowbridge might be tackles with quicks or they might be run stop ends. I decided to bring them in to see if they can sort out their positional issues. Almost picked Elliott, Gipson, and Roy at different points, but I had enough with three.

6) CB. Good year for corners. Never got one. I think Covid hurt Samuels, as he did not have a chance to fix an awful combine 40 time on his pro day. I picked him cuz I think he should be a cover safety, particularly with hybrid s/lb's all over the place who need a fs with range.

7) Edge. Not a good year, but better than some think. Huff must have really bombed his interviews because I cannot imagine a position coach alive who would look at his getoff, bend, and hips, and not say "I can work with that."

8) QB. I wanted a backup. Fromm would have been perfect. Didn't happen. James Morgan went earlier than I was ready to consider him.

9) LB. I kept an eye open, but never prioritized the position. I would have gone early for a MIKE to develop into the defensive leader but none I liked dropped.

10) RB. I hate drafting running backs, due to shelf life. I do believe in drafting a stud rb when you have everything else in place. I also believe in picking guys like Benjamin late, to see if they have the "it" factor. If they do, they are a good supplemental back. If they don't you flush them off the roster before it matters.

11) ST. If you leave me unattended I overdraft specialists. I picked Bass. It was all I could do not to pick a punter and also a snapper.

As far as my goals, I had a good weekend, despite what I said above. I am absolutely convinced Wills is a stud, far above the other tackles. Cushenberry should be a Day 1 starter; while he may not blow anyone out, he will stay in front of them and stone them. Jones may need a year or two but I think he can start. If not, he'll get his share of starts as a swing tackle backup. I don't think Higgins is AJ Green, but I do expect him to produce at X. (I said that, but think he should be at Z early in his career, until he can reliably release cleanly by himself.) Excited to see what AGG turns into. If I find a quarterback next year, having these players from this draft will make his job easier.
