Agreed. It's rare the 1st week Free Agents live up to the contracts they sign. Most don't finish the contracts as is...1st week is all about the big numbers and being paid more than the last guy. You got day one guys who like you said are almost always overpaid and rarely end up being worth it. You almost have to consider your Trading cap space (the amount above the players value) for their rights. IE: we sign Anthony Harris for 14mil knowing we’re going to get 10 mil of value from him. That 4 million is assets just like draft picks are that we’re giving up to get another teams assets.... there’s nothing free about free agency then you have the older “stop gap” veterans, guys who use to be top players at their positions but got older, declined, and teams cut them instead of their top of the position salaries (Everson Griffin... i know he declined his option technically) or there’s vets who finished out their contract and hit the market like Robert Quinn. Your almost always knowingly paying a player for who they were not who they will be while you have them. One again your overpaying to acquire talent... same nothings free in free agency applies. i think we really have the correct model. Don’t sign day 1, market setting guys unless their a position of absolute need and if you do structure the deal so there’s no dead cap after year 2. We did this with Trent brown. Even the tier 2/3 guys like Tyrell Williams and Joyner... we allow ourselves to get out without a penalty after year 2. Essentially, we’ve decided we’re willing to lease guys like This at an inflated price but won’t buy them.
