Round 2 Eastern Conference Playoffs – Games 1-4

I played games 1 & 3 weeks ago and don’t remember much about them.  The series is tied 2-2 after four games.  I won Game 1 and lost Game 3.  Then the computer simmed a win and a loss in the other two games.

Summary

Back to action after a long hiatus, I was a bit rusty, but pulled out the win against a tough opponent.  Buddy Hield was freaking unstoppable, scoring 42 points and drawing a ton of fouls (he was 10/10 from the free throw line).  He also hit 4 three pointers in the game.  Their starting lineup is really tough, with their entire starting lineup being able to shoot 3s (Markkanen plays Center for them).  Their starting PG Keith Cousins was the 15th pick in the 2021 draft and is a really good passer, he had 12 assists in the game.

Ultimately I won this game in the paint.  Once again I couldn’t hit anything from 3, so I just starting pounding them inside.  Meeks had a double double, but backup Center Colin McCarthy destroyed their 2nd unit.  He’s really talented as a scorer, just needs work defensively.  The only success I had from deep was with Troy Daniels, who hit four 3s.

CJ Ellis Jr. just destroyed the Celtics inside.  The Celtics had Jayson Tatum on him early on, who did ok on him, but for some reason they left John Henson in at PF for pretty much the entire 4th quarter.  I think I scored like 26 points with Ellis in the 4th quarter alone.  Henson can’t keep up with Ellis Jr. at all, I just kept running right past him for easy dunk after easy dunk.

Feels good to beat a good team, I’m up in the series 3-2.

Summary

Well that was a beatdown.  I am a terrible matchup for this aging Cavaliers roster.  They have no real size underneath, and they can’t keep up with me on the perimeter.  They’re basically a roster full of undersized aging slow forwards.  Ellis Jr. just ran by Love for most of the game for easy dunks, scoring on 14 of his 16 attempts.  After awhile they started crashing inside to try to stop Ellis Jr., so I started hitting Davidson outside for 3 and he delivered big with EIGHT made 3s.  All 24 of his points were from made 3 pointers.

I also completely destroyed them in rebounding, I had 3 players with double doubles in the game, Ellis Jr, Meeks and McCarthy.  Meeks really bullied Tristan Thompson inside all game as Thompson just doesn’t have the size to stand up to him.  McCarthy continues to be a great scorer but struggles defensively.

If this is Lebron’s last series in the NBA I’m glad I get to play him one last time.

Summary

This was another dominating performance, the game was never close.  In fact, my defense was so dominant the Cavaliers didn’t score a single point in the entire 3rd quarter.  Center Carson Meeks was a man on a mission, finishing with 18 points, 16 rebounds and 8 blocks!  The Cavaliers have no answer for him, he’s just too big.  They have no size.

CJ Ellis Jr. destroyed them again, this time for 60 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.  My two bigs are eating the Cavs up.  SG Lamar Davidson had a rough night shooting, but contributed four made 3s, and grabbed 8 rebounds himself.

This series has been a breeze.  Should be over soon.

Summary

This was a very tight game, I didn’t pull away until the end.  The Suns are a very talented team with versatile, long players that can score and play defense.  Josh Jackson is bigger than I thought he would be, he looks like a PF running around at SG speed.  He really smothered my guys defensively on the perimeter.  Deandre Jordan was a real hassle too, remember he gave me fits before when he played for the Orlando Magic.

Luckily for me the Suns made some mistakes.  For one, they should have had Josh Jackson guarding Lamar Davidson, instead they had Devin Booker.  I was able to get open and hit six 3 pointers with Davidson.  The second mistake is the play of their PG, Guy James, who continued to lob up brick after brick even though I was smothering him defensively.  He was the #4 overall pick in the 2021 draft and is a decent player, but if he had dumped it off to his talented teammates more this would have been a closer contest.

Ellis Jr. dominated again with 46 points, 6 rebounds 2 assists and 4 steals.  Meeks ate up the glass with 20 rebounds, winning his battle with Deandre Jordan.  I was a little disappointed in how my 2nd unit performed against theirs, I need my backups to step it up in the next game.

NBA Finals – Game 2 (Bulls Lead 1-0)

This game was simmed, Bulls won 106-88 and lead the series 2-0.  I’m going to sim another game because I want to play the deciding game in the Finals.

Summary

WOW I can’t believe I won this game!  I was down 8 points to start the 4th quarter and wasn’t hitting anything.  So I decided to just drive to the rim with Ellis Jr. over and over again.  I ended up coming all the way back and tying it up, but I had a late turnover and they came down and got fouled on a made layup, converted the free throw and went up 3 with 3.5 seconds left in the game.  I had 1 timeout left so I used it to advance the ball to half court.  I knew I was going to Ellis Jr., I got him around the center of the court, about 8 or so steps back behind the 3 point line (so way way back), I pulled the trigger and hit an “Excellent” release point on the shot.  I swished through the net and sent me to Overtime!

In overtime I just continued pounding with Ellis Jr. inside, both teams were tired and they couldn’t really stop him at this point.  Ellis Jr. ended up with a triple double and insane 88 points in an NBA Finals clinching game.

This has been a great roster for me.  This might be the best defensive roster I’ve ever assembled, the team is so versatile and teams really have a tough time scoring on me.  The whole band should be back next year too, as only backups SF Jonathan Pederson and SG Troy Daniels are free agents.

Sorry I usually take a pic of my guys holding up the trophy but I forgot to take one because I was freaking out that I won lol.  Here's a random stock photo:

Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery3.jpg

The only lottery pick I have this year is the Pistons pick, which has the 7th best odds.  The top 5 odds are:

1.       Heat (25.0%)

2.       Pacers via Wizards (19.9%)

3.       Pelicans (15.6%)

4.       Rockets (11.9%)

5.       Kings (8.8%)

Who’s it going to be…..

My pick held at 7.  No one jumped into the top 3.  The Pelicans held form at #3 overall, the Pacers landed #2, and the Heat won the lottery.

I have the 7th, 16th,  and 30th picks in this draft.

2023 NBA Draft

NBA_Draft_logo_(no_year).png

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 7 overall

Round 1 – 16 overall

Round 1 – 30 overall

Round 2 – 56 overall

I have 3 open roster spots and 4 picks, so I’ve gotta either take a Euro stash or trade some of these picks away.  I don’t really have any needs, so I’ll just be looking for BPA throughout.

The Dallas Mavericks have traded PG Dennis Smith Jr. and SF Otto Porter to the Heat for the #1 overall pick and James Johnson.  Interesting.  The Mavericks select SG Guy Hood #1 overall, he’s an 83 OVR A+ potential future star player.  They gave up a lot though.  Wow, trade at 2 as well.  The Portland Trailblazers have traded PG Damian Lillard to the Pacers for #2 overall and a 2025 Pacers first round pick.  Lillard is still good but he’s 33 years old, pretty terrible trade for the Pacers IMO.  The Trailblazers select PG Brian Washburn at 2, he’s only 75 OVR with B- potential per my scouting reports.  Ummm ok?  The Pelicans take SF Dmitri Kursov at 3, he was probably the top player on my board.  He’s got a decent 3 point shot, is a good perimeter defender and has A+ potential.  Why didn’t the Trailblazers take him?  Another trade at 4 wow.  The Timberwolves have traded PG Isaiah Thomas and SG Lance Stephenson to the Rockets for #4 overall and SG Carlton Hunter (2022 #4 overall pick).  Errrr, the Rockets essentially just traded two #4 overall picks for two aging guards.  Timberwolves select PF Rudolph Peeler, 69 OVR with A Potential.  Great trade and pick overall for them.  Another trade at 5!  Clippers have traded SF Ramon Aguilar (#6 pick in 2022) and SF Danilo Gallinari to the Kings for #5 overall and #33 overall.  The Clippers then take PG Rod Cunningham at 5, he’s 72 OVR with B- potential.  Decemt trade for the Kings IMO.  6th pick is SF Otis Stafford to the Trailblazers.  I’m on the clock at 7.

These are the top players available at 7:

PG Steven Adkins

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
3 PG Steven Adkins 6'2" 192 6'9" Nebraska 72 B

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ B+ B- D C+ B- C- C- A-

Adkins is a solid prospect.  He’s a decent shooter and perimeter defender, and his 83 SPD 83 ACC and 92 Vertical are all pretty highly rated.  He has the Acrobat, Ankle Breaker, One Man Fast Break, Posterizer, and Relentless Finisher badges.  My only issue is that I already have 3 PGs already on the roster.  But, all of them are about to become free agents in a year.  So he would definitely see no playing time this year at all, but could be a decent long term play as a future backup PG.  He doesn’t have ideal Potential Rating for a top 10 prospect though.

SF Felipe Alvarado

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
4 SF/SG Felipe Alvarado 6'8" 224 6'11" Puerto Rico 74 B-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ A- C+ C- C C+ C C+ B-

Alvarado is a decent shooter already but will need to progress some on his 3 point shot.  He’s a pretty decent all around prospect with no real weaknesses.  His 83 SPD 68 ACC, 89 Lateral Quickness is neither special or terrible.  He’s pretty solid across the board, and I’m probably not going to retain my back up SF (Pederson) in free agency.  I just took Randle last year though who’s another SF.  He has the Corner Specialist, Pick & Popper, and Pick & Roller badges.  He could possibly play some 2 guard for me if he developed his shot more.

C Coby Meekins

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
12 C Coby Meekins 6'11" 232 7'3" Missouri 73 A

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C D- F D+ D+ C C- D+ A-

Meekins has the best potential rating left in the draft, and is also the best Rebounder in the draft.  The one thing my team lacks is an elite rebounder, I’ve somehow never landed one.  He’s a decent interior defender and has the Rim Protector badge, which means he should develop into an excellent defender/rebounding Center (which is exactly what I use my Center primary for).  My issue is I already have Meeks on a contract extension and McCarthy with 3 years left on his rookie contract.  I don’t see how Meekins ever sees the court.

Tough decision here, but I think its between Adkins and Alvarado, I just don’t see how Meekins ever plays.  Adkins is the long term play and would give me a cheap backup PG next year.  Alvarado could potentially contribute this year, but I’d be bailing on Randle as a prospect.  Ultimately though, I like my current PGs more than Randle, and maybe I could retain two of them next year.

With the 7th pick in the NBA draft the Chicago Bulls select:

SF Felipe Alvarado, Puerto Rico

1EoovDq.jpg

He can play a backup role at the 2 & 3 spots.  I need to develop his shooting.

I’m not on the clock again until 16, time to sim.  PG Steven Adkins goes immediately to the Timberwolves at 8.  C Coby Meekins goes 10th to the Jazz, dang.

These are the top players available at 16:

PG Alen Vugrinec

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
20 PG Alen Vugrinec 5'11" 161 6'4" Lithuania 64 B

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D D+ D- F D+ B D- C C

He’s a pass first, pass only PG as he doesn’t appear to be a shooter or slasher.  He’s also not a good perimeter defender.  He does have 93 SPD, 88 ACC and 75 Lateral Quickness and the Break Starter and Flashy Passer badges.  Very raw prospect.

C Richie Barry

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
21 C Richie Barry 7'0" 270 7'3" Fresno St 70 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- D- F C+ D- D- B+ D C

Most of the top rated players on the board are a bunch of mediocre SF prospects.  Barry is another defensive/rebounding Center prospect with pretty decent athleticism.  He also has the Acrobat, Bruiser, Drop Stepper, and Rim Protector badges which is pretty awesome for a prospect this late in the draft.  I have the same concern with him though, he’d only ever see the court due to injury.

SG Arnold Schroeder

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
26 SG Arnold Schroeder 6'2" 198 6'4" Germany 65 B

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D+ B+ A D- D- D+ D D+ D

Schroder is a Euro-stash that will be staying overseas for 3 more years.  He’s pretty short for a 2 guard and is pretty weak athletically with only 53 SPD, 71 ACC and 61 Lateral Quickness.  He is however by far the best shooter left in the draft, and has the Limitless Range badge.

Barry feels like the best player here, but the other two fill possible long term needs.  Honestly Vugrinec feels like a real reach so he’s out.  Its between Barry and Schroeder.  Ultimately I think Schroeder’s weak athleticism makes him the inferior prospect.

With the 16th pick in the NBA draft the Chicago Bulls select:

C Richie Barry, Fresno State

ec9bl95.jpg

He’s an serious luxury pick but I don’t have any needs.  He was the best prospect on the board IMO.

I don’t pick again till 30.  Vugrinec goes 22nd to the 76ers, and Schroeder follows suit at 23 to the Magic.

There’s no one here at 30 really worth taking, I’m going to explore trade options.

*TRADE*

Orlando Magic Receive

#30 overall

#56 overall

Chicago Bulls Receive

SG Arnold Schroeder (64)

BiRUSoN.jpg

I guess the Magic didn’t like what they saw?  They offered me Schroeder for my remaining two picks.  I’ll be happy to stash him away for 3 years.

And so concludes another draft.  I got two solid backups and a eurostash.  Alvarado might see time right away with my 2nd unit.

UPDATE

Wow, Barry actually has A+ potential.  I’m getting stacked at Center.  Alvarado has B+ potential.

SF Jonathon Pederson (75) – no offer – Although Pederson is a good shooter he’s limited athletically and hasn’t contributed much to me in the games I play.  Rookie SF Alvarado will be taking his spot.

Free Agency

I only have one roster spot and really no minutes to give out, so I’m looking for a raw long term prospect to fill the 15th spot.

Signed C/PF Josh Reeves to a 3-years $3.05 mil deal.  He’s a rookie UDFA, but has A potential.  I can develop him for a few years then flip him for a pick.

Major Contract Signings:

PG Leo Smith – 76ers – 4 years, $127.96 mil

SG James Harden – Rockets – 5 years, $228.32 (WOAH)

SF Lebron James – Cavaliers – 1 year, $34.65 mil (interesting he’s stuck with the Cavs all this time)

SF Odell Shepard – Cavaliers – 5 years, $142.34 mil

C Myles Turner – Hornets – 5 years, $167.83 mil

SG Zach LaVine – Hawks – 4 years, $124.89 mil

SF Jaylen Brown – Pacers – 3 years, $60.67 mil

SG James Young – Timberwolves – 3 years, $55.14 mil

C Jarrett Allen – Nets – 3 years, $57.55 mil

C Deandre Jordan – Celtics – 3 years, $96.24 mil (he has been a mercenary bouncing around)

PF Kristaps Porzingis – Raptors – 4 years, $122.58 mil

C Mirko Petrovic – Thunder – 4 years, $110.04 mil

SG Archie Goodwin – Pelicans – 3 years, $76.38 mil

SF Kawhi Leonard – Pistons – 3 years, $60.68 mil

C Ivaca Zubac – Wizards – 3 years, $54.08 mil

PG Russell Westbrook – Thunder – 4 years, $166.37 mil

C Clint Capela – Grizzlies – 4 years, $113.24 mil

SF Gordon Hayward – Raptors – 4 years, $99.10 mil

PF Kevon Looney – Raptors – 4 years, $132.59 mil (how much cap space did they have?)

PF Lauri Markkanen – Celtics – 4 years, $101.84 mil (paring Markkanen with Jordan is pretty sick)

PG John Wall – Wizards – 4 years, $107.54 mil

PF Markieff Morris – Timberwolves – 3 years, $53.88 mil

C Andre Drummond – Thunder – 5 years, $210.85 mil

C Malik Flowers – Kings – 1 year, $18.94 mil (good for him)

WOW.  I only ever type up $50+ mil deals (and sometimes former players of mine) but I have never seen that many major deals in one offseason.  Some major money was handed out this offseason.
