2024 Off-Season Official Visits/Rumors/Reports

Patriots have to make another move at online in Free agency.  Unless the plan is for Owenu to play Rt then they really don't have anyone there.  While there are a lot of tackles in the draft, I don't think you want to head into the draft needing two starters.  I would think they'd like some flexibility in rnds 2 and 3 to be able to pursue the best offensive players available without NEEDING to draft a tackle.  Jonah Williams?  Tyron Smith?  Either would be a big add.

Takitaki is a solid signing for you guys. Wish we would have brought him back for that price. He's certainly nothing special, but I feel like he's gotten better each year he's been in the league and the dude plays with a ton of fire.

Not surprised he signed with you since Wolf was supposedly the one pounding the table for him when we drafted him.

"Takitaki with the tackletackle," alone, makes the signing worth it.

Filling out the depth chart, hard to be too upset. Bourne back, Parker gone. Onwenu back, whether that’s at guard or tackle, it’s big. LBer depth. A third down back. A vet QB that knows the system. If they can add a quality receiver, you have to feel good about entering the draft.

I echo this sentiment. Day one of Free Agency was very (pre-2018) Belichikian. Retain your core players at/or slightly below market value (KB resigning is debatable), find some value outside signings.

Now with those things settled, they set themselves up for a big remaining FA or two. Those are still available.

Are there any pass rushers left, aside from Hunter? Seems like most of the big signings, and even the under the radar guys, are mostly gone.

Aside from the potential return candidates in Uche/Jennings, Darrell Taylor has some intrigue as a one-for-one replacement for Uche. He's been more consistent and brings some explosiveness as a pass rush specialist with upside going into the future at 26 years old. Probably won't have to be a top-of-market deal either.

On a sidenote, I'd like to see if they can swing a trade for Dameon Pierce with a late round pick. He was a horrible fit in Slowik's offense and was doghouse'd by the time the playoffs came around. Can't have too many RBs in AVP's system with how much they're gonna want to run the ball. Caserio being a longtime friend helps.

I think at this point I’m expecting Calvin Ridley but I won’t go so far as to say it is necessary to get him or someone of his pedigree/expense/value.

Just expecting it. Won’t be disappointed if he doesn’t sign or if he does sign. Pats can be flexible with it.

I think one of Cornelius Lucas, Tyron Smith, and Jonah Williams will be signed. If they trade for a tackle I would think they target trading for Ronnie Stanley or Morgan Moses.

What do you think is the deal with Justin Fields?  Not just from a Patriots standpoint but a bunch of the QB needy teams chose to spend money on mediocre QBs rather than trade a 3rd rounder, or maybe even less, for this guy.

I think he is Plan B for everyone depending on how the draft falls

He sucks. I doubt anyone is interested in giving up more than a Day 3 pick. Might be unpopular to say this but Mac only fetched a 6th, and I didn't see his value at much less, rather the same, as Fields. The only thing separating Fields is the athleticism and flashy plays.

My belief is that teams want a veteran QB who “knows the game” that can start in a pinch, more so than they want a young QB looking to save his career as a starter. It’s the same reason you don’t necessarily want to bring in a Mac Jones + a rookie. They’re just at different stages of their careers. Not saying Mac is as good as Fields (I think Fields is mediocre, but Mac is worse), just highlighting that players will come in at different stages with different expectations.

Like, I’m sure Brissett and Minshew and Darnold, deep down inside, want to be starting NFL QBs. But I also believe that they know their roles and embrace them, similar to what Teddy did in Detroit and McCown’s done in Philly. Bringing in Fields is an on-the-field upgrade over those guys, but he’s not really at a point where he’s going to cultivate a young QB, IMO. There’s also a larger monetary value with Fields going into 2025 and beyond.

So if you don’t like any of these rookie QBs at all, want to pay Fields, and maybe win some games in 2024 - sure, Fields>Brissett, Darnold. But if you want to help bring a young QB along, show them how to be a pro, and maybe play for you in a pinch while allowing the rookie to grow, then you go with the vets.

JMO.

Jennings back, 3-years $12M (up to $24M). Prioritizing bringing back its core (Onwenu, Henry, Bourne, Uche, Jennings, Dugger?) and bringing in depth (Takitaki, Brissett, Gibson, Hooper, Okorafor). Still waiting on that splash, I think another CB, S, WR, T, and edge rusher can go a long way. Some guys I’d be open to:

Justin Simmons, FS

DJ Reader, DT

Tyler Boyd, WR

Stephon Gilmore, CB

Curtis Samuel, WR

Kendall Fuller, CB

Charles Leno, LT

Jonah Williams, T

Calais Campbell, DL

D’onte Foreman, RB

Hollywood Brown, WR

Mostly vets. Wouldn’t be upset with a Tyron Smith obviously, but I’m not sure the team’s in the running for him at this point. Calvin Ridley an option, obviously, as well. Boyd, Gilmore, and Williams are three guys I think would be really complementary fits at non-bank breaking prices. Boyd is a vet, can play any of the WR spots, and would probably be the best WR on the team right away (signing him and Ridley would transform the WR room significantly IMO). Gilmore’s not the #1 anymore, but I think he’d fit nicely into a room with Jones and Gonzo. Williams can play either tackle spot, and could give the team flexibility if they wanted to start he and Onwenu at tackle, or have Onwenu slide back down to guard. Without him (or another starting caliber tackle), you’re almost forced to have Onwenu stay at RT.

They have to sign a tackle today capable of starting.  They don't want to go into the draft needing to come away with two starting calbur players.  That will severely limit what your able to do to.  Theyd pretty much need to spend 2 of their first 3 picks on tackle.

Uggghhh...  Williams was an average player who got paid based on an outlier of a year.  He does nothing for me.
