Don't take off-ball LBs and RBs in the first round...it almost never works out. Shhh.... There are some fans on here who will get angry when you say things that make sense like that. So, Patrick Queen and Simmons don't get their 5th year options and Tampa Bay is probably trying to move on from Devin White but nobody wants to pay him 11 million + and give up capital for acquire him. Where were you guys in the Swift trade thread. I'm outnumbered by them, there.
G
Al Davis wasn't a fan of drafting LB's in the 1st round. I think Rolando McClain and Rob Fredrickson were the only two since the 90's. McClain was a big bama beast but a where's Waldo professionalism. Fredrickson was solid but nothing special. Mack was Reggie McKenzie's pick and moved to DE after his rookie season. He definately wasn't a bust but didn't finish his 2nd contract with the team that paid him. In the draft I've always liked 2nd-3rd round for Sam and Mike with Will's being 3rd-5th round picks. It's just a guideline for me and free agency is great for getting 2nd tier vets but those first week signings usually don't live up to that contract. If building a team that's what I'd do and if already in the playoffs a 1st round LB to fill a need/upgrade is the time to ignore the guidelines. I feel the same way about RB's 2nd/3rd for the 'starter types and 4th-5th for committie/specialist/has an element missing being size/speed/pass blocking/catching. A 1st round RB is if that's the missing piece or replacing a vet who won't be there once the pick is made. As a Raider fan I do not want to give Josh Jacobs a long term contract. Not because he doesn't deserve it (he does) but for building a team it's cheaper to just draft a RB every other year in 2nd-5th rounds. RB is a heavy production/low shelf life position where committie approach has really defined the NFL the past decade. In the 90's it was a different game where your QB could get murdered without a flag and now if he's touched in the wrong place it's a 1st down.
