How schedules are assigned in the NFL

Based upon the previous season's record, a team is plugged into a slot in the schedule which has them playing weaker opponents if they've been a losing team.  Some tough, top teams will be in the mix but in essence the cellar dwellers will have a drastically lower quality of opponents the following year.

The Jags had a fluke year and played well enough to get to the AFC Championship game. It was a shocking turn around.

The next year they had a first schedule against quality opponents in god knows how long.

A tough schedule.  And it's called the sophomore slump because the mustard came off the hot dog.

Welcome to the forums!

Just as a warning, this type of thread post is considered trolling given the context of coming into another team's subforum to post it as a thread. In the future, something like this may be better served as an NFL General post discussing the effect that NFL scheduling has on teams overperforming or underperforming. Here though, I'm going to lock it up.
