Wyld Stallyns
Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap wrote an article about minimum cash spending for 2020. Per the CBA, which everyone knows expires after this season, every four years teams are required to spend 89% of the cap. https://overthecap.com/minimum-cash-spending-in-2020/ Fitzgerald writes that as of the end of 2019 all 32 teams had met the 89% threshold but with the expectation of a $200 million cap for 2020 the new threshold will be approximately $651 M and with that in mind 5 teams have yet to hit the threshold (numbers are estimates) Colts $43 M below ($89 M cap space) - last year the Colts gave Brissett an extension with $28 M in new money and didn’t ask Luck to return millions in bonuses paid just before his retirement. These moves were likely made with this exact thing in mind. Cowboys $45 M below ($77M) - Franchise Tag for Prescott plus rookie contracts will likely cover most of this Ravens $47 M below ($26M) - Tag Judon? Or tag and trade could give them additional draft picks that could increase their spending to meet without putting them too far over where only one of two cuts/restructures make it work. Chargers $48 M below ($48M) - half of this will be cleared just with draft picks alone. One or two cuts/restructures will allow them to sign some free agents and put them in a good spot. Bills $53 M below ($80 M) - extensions and free agents needed to match this He also mentions that teams are going to be leery of giving out long term deals until the new CBA is done and some teams might use this to try to break the union support by not offering big deals to free agents (seeing as 27 teams have met the threshold and don’t have to spend)
wackywabbit
The Ravens can dole out huge signing bonuses in extensions for Stanley and Humphrey to close that number. Judon is going to be interesting because they normally let guys on his track go, but they need pass rushers now.
