Super Bowl broadcast rotation could change again

When the NFL swapped broadcast assignments of Super Bowls 55 and 56, it was so NBC could have their Super Bowl during a Winter Olympics year and CBS having theirs during a year they broadcast the Final Four.

However, the cancellation of this year's NCAA Tournament will complicate things. Because TBS was scheduled to televise the Final Four this year, the NCAA may change the rotation of the Final Four to TBS in odd years and CBS in even years. This will cause CBS to lose the Final Four in the year they are scheduled to carry Super Bowl 55.

There has been precedent for something like this. For many years, in the World Series, the AL had home-field advantage in odd years and the NL in even years. When the strike canceled the 1994 Series, the rotation was changed so that the NL had home advantage in odd years, and the AL in even years, because the AL had it in 1993, and the NL was scheduled to have it in 1994. The home advantage rotating between the leagues would end after the 2002 World Series.

The NFL could potentially swap Super Bowls 55 and 58 between CBS and NBC, so once again CBS has the Super Bowl and the Final Four in the same year should the NCAA change their Final Four rotation. This would result in NBC having two consecutive Super Bowls. Only twice has the same network aired back-to-back Super Bowls. Super Bowl I was telecast on both CBS and NBC, with the former also airing Super Bowl II. Super Bowls 28 and 29 were both televised by NBC.
