Saracens regained their Premiership title, winning a fourth final against holders Exeter at Twickenham.

Two Chris Wyles tries in his last game before retirement and scores from Billy Vunipola and Nathan Earle won it for them after a sluggish start.

Gareth Steenson scored Chiefs' only try as Sarries survived losing Schalk Brits to the sin-bin in the closing quarter.

In a repeat of the 2016 showpiece, Saracens took the trophy in their fourth final in the past five years.

Leinster completed a historic double after adding the Pro14 title to their Champions Cup crown.

They defeated reigning champion Scarlets at Dublin's Aviva Stadium to cap a remarkable season for Irish rugby.

It was the first time a Pro14 side had completed the European and league domestic double.

And after Joe Schmidt's national side won the Grand Slam, Leinster have continued the Irish success story.

Chris Ashton scored a hat-trick as the Barbarians beat England for the first time in this fixture since 2014.

It was the 31-year-old Toulon wing's first appearance against the nation for whom he won 39 caps.

Ashton crossed three times within 25 minutes as the Baa-Baas outscored England by nine tries to six.

It is a fourth successive loss for Edie Jones' England side, who last won on 10 February against Wales in the Six Nations.

World Rugby announces 'below-the-nipple' law trial for Junior World Championship

http://www.espn.com/rugby/story/_/id/23608187/world-rugby-announces-nipple-law-trial-junior-world-championship

Quote

World Rugby has continued its push to make the game safer, announcing a high-tackle law trial for next month's Junior World Championship in France.

Citing data that says 76 percent of head injuries happen in the tackle and 72 percent of those occur to the tackler, players at the tournament will now adhere to a "below-the-nipple-line" target zone as opposed to the previous below the shoulder.

The law trials have been brought in to encourage players to bend at the waist and aim for a lower hit zone, with World Rugby citing evidence a player is 4.3 times more likely to suffer an injury when attempting a tackle in an upright position.

Law 9.13 reads as follows for the trial: "A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously. Dangerous tackling includes, but is not limited to, tackling or attempting to tackle an opponent above the nipple line even if the tackle starts below the nipple line."

World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont described the trial as proof of rugby's commitment to reducing its injury toll, with a specific focus on reducing the risk of concussion.

2) Damian Willemse (RSA):

Willemse likewise looks comfortable at Super Rugby level. He has the same potential to make this U20s tournament his own. It's a rare treat to have two outstanding, & well developed in terms of skill / vision, young number 10s competing in the same tournament.

Ireland and Ulster centre Jared Payne will take up a coaching role with the province after retiring because of recurring headaches.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/44279099

Quote

Ireland and Ulster centre Jared Payne will take up a coaching role with the province after retiring because of recurring headaches.

Payne, who will be Ulster's defence coach, has not played since sustaining a head injury on the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 2017.

New Zealand-born Payne, 32, represented Ulster on 78 occasions and earned 20 Ireland caps.

The confirmation about Payne's enforced retirement was inevitable after his recurring headaches meant he couldn't play a single minute for Ulster this season.

South Africa appoint first ever black player to captain Springboks in a Test Match

SIYA Kolisi will be the first black player to captain South Africa in a Test match after being handed the role for the upcoming series against England.

Kolisi had already become the first black player to temporarily captain South Africa in a Test last year when Eben Etzebeth was injured during a game. Another black player, Chiliboy Ralepelle, captained a South Africa team against a World XV in a 2006 game that didn’t have Test status.

Kolisi becomes the first black player to be officially appointed Test captain in the Springboks’ 127-year history.

Notes - WAL v. RSA:

Don't let the scoreline fool you. It was one of the worst games of rugby in living memory. Horrendous spectacle.

Word of advice for rugby administrators... When you are trying to grow the profile of rugby union in America, NEVER send second rate teams.

If that match was your first exposure to rugby, I wouldn't blame you for never wanting to watch another game ever again.

Notes:

(South Africa v. England), & (Australia v. Ireland) were both excellent games. One high scoring, the other low scoring, but both high quality rugby.

Shame, American fans weren't treated to a game of this standard the week before.

~~~~~~~
Poor officiating in the (New Zealand v. France) game contributed to a lopsided contest. Disappointing overall.
Quick Note:
Congratulations to France Under 20s on winning the 2018 U20 World Rugby Championship. Their first ever.
It'll look good in the trophy cabinet next to the 2018 U20 6 Nations Championship trophy they picked up earlier this year.
It's also nice to see the dominance England & New Zealand hold over this tournament broken every once in a while.
