~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(June International Window - Quick Notes / Thoughts )
+
~ Incredible series dished up by Ireland & Australia
~ New Zealand & Ireland further cement their status as the two best sides in the World
~ South Africa look much improved heading into the 2018 Rugby Championship
~ England finished their tour strongly, but seem to have lost their way in 2018. Particularly, in regard to composure, & discipline. They really need to do well in the November Test window. After all, a habit of losing close games isn't ideal heading into a World Cup year.
~ Argentina were soundly defeated in all their June fixtures. It doesn't bode well for them in the upcoming Rugby Championship
~ Unimpressed by France. Unimpressed by the NZ v. FRA series.
~ Wales have looked excellent throughout June. Their jump in rankings is well deserved
~ Very impressive results from the US during the June Test period. The Scotland scalp is one to savour. Hopefully this spurs them on to something greater.
~ Japan has looked good in June. Fingers crossed we see a strong Japanese team for next year's World Cup
~ Scotland continue to blow hot & cold. Brilliant one week, awful the next
~ Refereeing & law interpretation inconsistencies continue to plague the game. This needs to be cleaned up before next year's World Cup in Japan
That's mad that RSA won. They were arguably more consistent but Fiji won 5 rounds to RSAs 2.
Yeah, it's a bit of a head-scratcher. Similar result in the womens series too, just to a lesser extent.
Both teams were a placing short of the title, despite claiming the most overall tournament victories.
The points system is quite unusual in a team sport context. It's probably more akin to what you'd find on F1 / NASCAR circuits.
Doesn't really reflect who the true champion is.
Not a huge fan really
Yeah, I see your point.
Unfortunately it's one of those close seasons where only a few points seperated the top sides. And, while Fiji were outstanding in a number of tournaments, they were subpar in others, including the final one.
(Had Fiji finished 4th, instead of 5th, they'd be equal in points with RSA, & have won the series).
WR could intervene, & change the points system to increase the points awarded to the winning side. But, since the finale was an exciting one, I doubt that they will.
Sam Warburton: Wales and British & Irish Lions captain retires from rugby
https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/44869719
Quote
British and Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton has retired from rugby at the age of 29 after winning 79 Test caps.
The former Wales captain has not played since leading the 2017 Lions to a drawn series against New Zealand.
The back-rower recently returned to Cardiff Blues training after being sidelined for 2017-18 by knee and neck surgery.
"My body is unable to give me back what I had hoped for on my return to training," said Warburton.
In a statement announcing the decision, the Welsh Rugby Union said that following his most recent injuries it had "become clear to Warburton that he wouldn't be able to return to the high standards he has set throughout his career".
Warburton, the winner of 74 Wales and five Lions caps, added: "Unfortunately, after a long period of rest and rehabilitation the decision to retire from rugby has been made with my health and wellbeing as a priority."
Defending champions New Zealand produced a sublime display of attacking rugby to beat first-time finalists France 29-0 on Saturday to become the first nation to win back-to-back Rugby World Cup Sevens titles.
The crowd at AT&T Park in San Francisco were then treated to the Black Ferns Sevens' spine-tingling haka in celebration of a fifth title in as many sevens events after success at the Commonwealth Games and the final three rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series.
New Zealand crowned men's RWC Sevens champions
https://www.rwcsevens.com/news/348801
Quote
New Zealand created history at AT&T Park on Sunday with their 33-12 victory over England making them not only the first nation to win back-to-back Rugby World Cup Sevens titles but also the first to lift the Melrose Cup on three occasions.
The victory also ensured that just as in Moscow five years ago, New Zealand completed the double with the Black Ferns Sevens having won the women's crown on Saturday evening in San Francisco.
