18 game regular season

All these people saying that the 2nd bye could mean having a bye before TNF really haven’t thought it through. That would NEVER fly with the players.

The whole idea of the bye is that you play a game Sunday, then you don’t even need to practice again for 10 days. You can take a vacation if you like, you can go home and relax, you can go out and drink 20 beers. Whatever.

TNF means you also get a mini bye where you play Thursday night and get 5 days off before your next practice.

Putting TNF after a bye means you replace a full bye and a mini-bye with just two mini-byes. There would be an absolute revolt from the players if that ever happened. It never should and never will.

I'm not quite following you.

Say every team gets one of their Byes the week before TNF. For example a team is playing their TNF game in week 4, and they are getting a Bye in week 3.

Say we were in week 4 right now.

That means a team last played on 4/21, they had their bye this past Sunday 4/28, is playing this Thursday 5/2, and they won't play again until 5/12.

That's a quite a but of time off, and that's not even counting the "regular" bye they will get elsewhere in the season.

At the moment every team gets:

1 regular bye (no game at all in that week)

1 very short week (Sunday to Thursday turnaround)

1 mini bye (10 days between TNF game and their next game)

Ignoring things like MNF and the late season Saturday games for simplicity.

Now - suppose you mandate that teams have a bye before they play on TNF. That would abolish the very short weeks, but it would also drastically shorten the bye (because you play on TNF instead of Sunday after the bye).

You still get the mini bye afterwards, but you’ve converted both the bye week and the very short week into a second mini bye.

The 10 day break in the middle of the season would be replaced with just a 4-5 day stoppage. The players would absolutely revolt if this ever happened.

For clarification I am a fan of each team playing one TNF game per year but it should NEVER be straight after a bye week.

I think your math is off. In an 18 game season with two byes you are still getting a full bye( the one that isn’t before tnf), you are also getting nearly two weeks off between the last game you play before tnf and the tnf  game itself because of the bye before tnf, then you are also getting the mini bye/10 days between tnf and the next game.

I’m 100% sure the players would prefer to have 2 proper byes, 1 mini bye and 1 short week than only 1 proper bye and 2 mini byes.

In additional to international sites the NFL should consider staging games in domestic neutral sites in cities without an NFL team of their own, like large college stadiums. The NFL last regularly played games on a college campus in 2005.

1) Possible and should happen.

2) They'll do what they did last time. 20% increase in minimum which will affect about 70% of the players at that time.

3) I don't see this happening.

4) It will be cut to 2 games.

In regards to point 4, it absolutely would be cut to 2 preseason games. This makes up for the 18th game so each team still plays 20 regular season/preseason games. The extra bye week will happen because Goodell reportedly said he wants the Super Bowl to be pushed back a week so it falls the day before Presidents Day.

Which is something we should all celebrate as Americans because we can all drink for the SB and not go into work the next day. It’ll be the winter version of MDW
