Tell me about Paul Guenther

Hey gents,

Thanks in advance. As you probably know, JDR is out the door and Gruden is likely our next HC. There are tons of rumors flying around regarding his potential new staff. Here are the notable names so far:

HC- Gruden

OC- Morton (Jets)

DC- Guenther (Bengals), Bradley (Chargers)

Can you guys give us Raiders fans some insight on Paul? What does his schemes look like? How do players respond to him? Is he blitz heavy, focused on the secondary, etc. Thanks for any and all info!

His main focus is points.  And the Bengals have been fairly good in that respect.  Early in the year before the defense got worn down by the ineptitude of the offense they were one of the better red zone defenses in the league.

He worked with Mike Zimmer to develop the double A gap look that is becoming more popular around the league.  That said he doesn't blitz a lot.  But he hasn't really had to either.  With Dunlap, Atkins, and now Lawson they have been able to get pressure from the front 4.

Before he was the DC he was the LB coach and worked with the pressure packages under Zimmer.  He played a big role in the early development of Burfict.  His focus is not giving up big plays and he plays a fair number of 2 high safety looks.  They have generally done a good job of containing WRs the past few years.  While we haven't beaten Pittsburgh as much as we would like recently, for the most part they have kept Brown from going off.

He is a solid DC.  He's not Mike Zimmer, but if you have some talent his schemes will produce results.

Pretty much what I would say.  he gets a bad rap for being conservative and playing a lot of prevent defense (like in the second quarter sometimes) but I have always believed that this was Marvin telling him to play it conservatively, instead of going for the knockout punch.  I say that because just about every other DC under Marvin, except Zimmer, has suddenly gone into a shell when playing with the lead.

Appreciate the info. Knowing Gruden, he will be incredibly involved in the Offense, leaving Guenther as the man for the D. Do you know if he has much say in personnel decisions in the past?

Probably some.  Our coaches also scout in the off-season and have say over we draft.  he would have had a say about Vigil, Evans and possibly Dawson.
