Traditional TE's were normally blockers as well as potential pass catchers while versitile TE's or HB's as they are often called, were generally pass catchers but not great blockers. I just don't think NE used Gonk all that much as a versitile TE, they fully expected him to block on running plays as well as be a pass receiver. It just seemed to me that people were using Gronk as a versitile TE when in fact he really was a more traditional TE. That is completely a misuse of the word versatile... tom cody
I went with the running back. Definitely one of the most important positions on the field IMO.

How so, traditional TE's weighed between 250 and 270 lbs. Versatile TE's tend to weigh between 230 to 240lbs. and generally are nowhere near the blockers traditional TE's were. They are better pass receivers, but the weight differential makes their blocking ability far less attractive.
iothar
What does versatile mean. A versatile TE is a tight end who can block and catch. A non versatile tight end is one who can only block or only catch. Look up the word.
Kmart128
Looks like OP is describing an all around TE rather than versatile. TEs should be able to catch and block... that is what makes the position but versatile in football means the ability to line up in multiple positions.
