tonyto36
Paraphrasing from what I heard on TV... "The Patriots thought that giving a ton of money to someone from the outside, vs in house at corner would make Butler less disgruntled. Meaning they thought paying Gilmore a big contract wouldn't upset Butler as much as doing it with Logan Ryan." It was a bit convoluted but it sounded like he was also on the verge of saying the Patriots thought the money would effect Logan Ryan more than Gilmore, who they believed had a good reputation as a football-guy. bluemushrooms
Gilmore all day. Gilmore's been playing well; issue isn't with Gilmore's play specifically, rather, the entire defense as a whole is having problems.
mcmurtry86
I get the argument and I'll take Gilmore over Ryan in terms of value for dollars spent. Butler is costing himself a ton of money regardless. If they don't plan on re-signing him, I'd have to think they will evaluate moving him before the trade deadline. He can't be trusted to play well if he's distracted
Deadpulse
If thats really a thought process that occurred at all, it speaks volumes IMO. That they had to consider Butler getting disgruntled because someone else got a new contract puts a bad taste in my mouth.
Hunter2_1
Why didn't they just restructure Butler's contract and sign Gillmore with slightly less?

bluemushrooms
Just gonna say that out of all the teams in the NFL, the Patriots are the last ones that are going to mess around with player contracts to scheme like this.

Don't know anything about contracts and how teams manage money, so was just asking.
