Team:

Third week in a row we are starting a new QB. But we have hope this week. Josh McCown gets the keys to the clunker and he can drive it pretty well. McCown has a higher completion percentage and has thrown for more TD’s than many of the starting BDL QB’s. His ability combined with this roster should not be overlooked. After dropping the last two we look to get back to our winning ways of weeks 3-6.

Offense:

We will be featuring a layered and balanced passing attack that spreads out the Rome defense and a zone and man blocking running game to take advantage of gaps in a spread out defense. We are facing a good up front defense that is lacking in the secondary especially with Janoris Jenkins suspended.

Formation:

Our base offense this week will be a three wide, one tight, one back set.  With the lack of skill in the Rome secondary we will utilize this formation and four wide sets to attack them. Often in the four wide sets McCaffrey will be the fourth receiver. We will run the occasional two tight set to mix it up against the Rome defense as well as using Kittle seldomly as HBack.

Pass Offense:

We believe Josh McCown has enough savvy and has been doing very well with limited options in New York that he will thrive in our offense. McCown has a better completion percentage and more touchdowns than the following BDL starting QBs, Big Ben, Winston, Eli, Matt Ryan, Goff, and Newton and this was even before Thursday night’s game. He also had one more TD than Brees even with just .2 less completion percentage. McCown plays in a run first offense with fewer weapons. So we are very excited to be starting Josh this week. We will not limit his passing attack and will attack all over the field as Rome’s defense has many weaknesses. We will attack with vertical looks on the outside, plus out looks, plus inside looks through a variety of route combinations with DeAndre Hopkins and Marvin Jones to beat man coverage and stack routes to create openings against any zone coverage they may use for McCown to pick and choose his matchups. Our focus is to abuse the weak corners Rome has and take advantage of the suspension of Jack Rabbit. Whoever he has can’t cover Hopkins, and we believe Jones can beat his man as well regularly. We introduce a new weapon this week in Devin Funchess, the number one receiver in Carolina. Funchess will be playing big slot where he will use his size to outmuscle Robey-Coleman or any slot corner, or use his athletic advantage against any of the linebackers or safeties Rome attempts to cover him with. Funchess gives our offense a new element we were lacking. We have the solid route runners with deceptive speed and quickness in Jones and Kupp. We have the do it all de facto number one in Hopkins. We have the elusive underneath and make you miss in the open field in McCaffrey. But we didn’t have that big bodied athletic pass catcher at receiver until now. McCaffrey will be seeing passes out of the backfield on swings and screens and out of the four wide sets at receiver running slants, arrows, verticals, and posts, and Cooper Kupp will also get some burn in the four wide sets when McCaffrey is in at RB. Mark Ingram will see a few passes out of the backfield as well. In three wide sets we have George Kittle or Tyler Kroft in the game at tight end. These will be the two tight ends on two tight sets. We think Kroft is a bit better receiver and that Kittle is the better blocker so we will use both interchangeably in different situations. We will use these two to attack the middle of the field later in the game to take advantage of the defense we have already been attacking outside. If they run man we are just plain better than they are. We want to utilize the fact that we have a competent QB for the first time in three weeks and the fact that Rome can’t cover us.

Rome has two pretty good pass rushers in Fowler and Dunlap and a third kind of pass rush specialist in McKinley. We believe our tackles Armstead and Bulaga can hold up against them. If Armstead can’t go Okung will start, and he has played pretty well this year. If need be we have an excellent blocker in George Kittle at TE who can stand in block or chip. We are starting Norwell this week at RG, with Thuney at LG and Unger again at C. Their interior Dline if starting with Brockers and Tomlinson doesn’t worry me as far as pressure goes and I believe we can move protection outside or towards the least favorable matchup with their edge guys as long as we aren’t seeing blitzes from the middle. On Passing downs I am sure they will bring in more pressure players like Matt I in the interior and we will adjust protection accordingly when those type of players are in the game.

Run Offense:

Ingram will get the majority of carries with McCaffrey spelling him on some run plays. We will be running a mix of a zone scheme looking to take advantage of open running lanes along the entire line as we spread out their defense with our passing game and formations; and a man blocking scheme as our sweet spots this week are off tackle but with the tackle sealing outside and running off of the guards down block and release to the LBer and off the tackles backside as he does his seal outside. Tomlinson and Brockers are two tough hombres against the run so doubling down and trusting our tackles to handle the edge defender and let him run himself around and out of the play will allow us to attack weak spots in the defense. The zone stretch is a play that will let us beat their defense outside because their DT’s aren’t exactly the quickest in the game but also provide cut backs behind them once they have made any sort of penetration. Patience is the game here and we believe we have two very patient runners in McCaffrey and Ingram. The running game takes some of the pressure off of McCown, and the running game will also be supported by the defense being spread out. Another formation I mentioned was using Kittle at HBack at times to give us an effective lead blocker on iso plays or counters. Like last week we will run one or two jet sweeps when McCaffrey is in the slot to create a new dimension in this offense.

Defense: We are looking to shut down Brees and Gurley. Their WR’s play into our CB's strengths and their best one drops quite a bit of passes. We will have the advantage on D in this one.

Formation:

Our base D is basically a 4-4 under again this week with Collins in the box but we expect to be in nickel most of the game however because of the rising Juju. We will run the same defense as last week with the same man responsibilities but if we see a four wide offense we will play a nickel and a cover 3 zone out of it. Bradley Roby will be on the field in nickel. We will be playing man this week and matching up accordingly. In obvious passing situations Matthews plays RE with Flowers at LE and Hargrave at NT with Jordan at UT. If they run two tight against us the 4-4 will be very effective.

Front 7:

Once again our DT pair will be DJ Reader and Javon Hargrave. This duo gives me a nice complimentary combo of a penetrator who is a solo tackle machine at under tackle and a lane clogging pocket collapser in DJ Reader at nose tackle. These two will be a key cog in shutting down Todd Gurley. Rome doesn’t have McVay so we will see the last season Gurley I’m sure  … Cam Jordan and Trey Flowers are great run defenders and underrated pass rushers who will beat Rome’s tackles early and often. In our base D, Jarrad Davis is in at MLB, and Clay Matthews at SLB with De’Vondre Campbell at WLB. These three are very good run defenders behind my line. Clay Matthews will have force responsibilities on outside run plays backs inside as well as blitzing every pass play from different sides and from the middle. Matthews will not have any coverage responsibilities. In 3 wide sets on running downs Matthews will come off the field but will play RE on obvious passing downs. Campbell will have some blitzing duty on nickel packages or act as a middle zone defender disrupting underneath routes, but he will always cover man on the RB if Davis is in the game and then Davis will have those blitzing/zone responsibilities. In two tight sets Campbell will man on the second TE. Davis will come off the field on clear passing downs and Deone Bucannon will play MLB and have man responsibility on the RB freeing Campbell to those blitz/zone responsibilities. Bucannon will play MLB on four wide and empty sets.

Secondary:

Trumaine covers Crabtree, Burns covers Cooper, and Roby has the slot. There is a chance Juju plays outside or in the slot and I am okay with my corners matching up one on one with either one. Landon Collins will play in the box this game to aid in stopping Gurley and matching up one on one with Howard. If he goes four wide we are staying in our nickel and Collins is lined up over the bigger of the two slot receivers and we will then play a cover 3 or possibly man if Howard is a split out and Collins will man him. If they go empty we will take Campbell off the field and Bucannon will play MLB, with Budda Baker in the game as our sixth DB and we will play cover 3. If they go four wide with Ginn in the game, Collins will matchup over Juju and jam him up before getting to his zone. Darian Thompson has deep zone responsibilities and will shade to the side that needs the most coverage help in man, and will have middle deep third in zone.  We will be jamming their receivers at the line to throw off timing.

The Leprechauns got themselves a McC at QB and look to fight their way to a victory this week.

Motivation

After a poor start to our season, we need to win every game.  We will not be looking past Long Beach, despite their recent issues

Offense

Drew Brees leads our attack this week against a solid defense coming from Long Beach(LB).  However, the Long Beach defense has some depth issues that we will be looking to exploit.

To succeed against  Long Beach, you have to stop their edge rushers.   Luckily for us, our offensive line has performed pretty well this year.  Despite any major NAME talent, all of our players have played very well this season.  One of our main keys this week is getting back center Brandon Linder.  His arrival allows us to go one on one in the interior.  Foster will get the DT lined up against him while Linder gets the other DT.  Neither of LB interior linemen scare us much, so we feel we can concentrate our efforts on stopping the edges with this strategy.  Wiz will be in charge of picking up blitzers if they are dumb enough to come in a four wide set, or most likely, he will be helping out Reiff on the blind side.  Gurley will be reading the other end before entering any route.  He is also in charge of picking up blitzers from that side and chipping the edge before his route.  We believe this strategy will help minimize the effects of Jordan and Flowers/Mathews.  Our second strategy for tiring down the edges is running a hurry up all game long.  This keeps the edges on the field and constantly running.  We feel LB simply doesn’t have the offense to keep up with us if we go this route as our possessions are going to lead to more points than theirs

LB has just an OK group of corners.  Trumaine Johnson has historically been a really good corner, but he has been downright awful thus far this year.   Bradley Roby has been known to give up big plays and Artie Burns probably by default becomes their best playing corner thus far.  However, in the four wide set our main attack will go up against Kareem Jackson who may be playing the worst corner in the league this year.  It has been so bad, LB and Houston are now listing him more as a safety.  With this average corner group, we feel Brees and his excellent weapons can go bananas.  Our receivers have been really hot recently with Smith Schuster going bonkers and Cooper having an over 200 yard game.  We will spread the ball around after attacking Jackson as we don’t particularly fear any of their corners at this point.  We will run a lot of quick hit slants and posts.  Landon Collins can only be on one side of the field and we will often run a deep route directly at him to take him out of the play.  If LB goes with zone, we will run floods and seams to take advantage with our WR

Todd Gurley will still get 15-20 carries.   The longer the game goes, the more carries Gurley will get against a tired group of defensive lineman.  The four wide should really open up the box and allow Gurley to get into the second level on dives and draws against a weak interior.  Riddick will basically come in to run some routes in the flats and routes to the short intermediate when Gurley needs a breather

Late in the game we have our two TE, FB, AP package to run down the clock against a tired front that will be chasing all game.

TL/DR:   Air Raid, hurry up.  Help with the edge rushers, open up the box to get Gurley to the second level easier.  Attack Kareem Jackson and OK corners.  Run Collins out of plays underneath

Defense

The LB attack is a solid, if unspectacular group.   LB possesses a solid tackle duo and one of the better WR in DeAndre Hopkins.  We will have our hands full in stopping him, but we think we can shut down this offense on a pretty consistent basis

Up front, LB has some solid names, but most of them are under producing.  Max Unger in particular has been terrible this year.  This offensive line also really struggles in run blocking, which LB needs to lean on to be successful in this game.  LB needs to have a successful running game as they welcome in Josh McCown who they just claimed off of waivers.  McCown has been with the team for a total of three days and simply can’t know the whole offense or have a good chemistry with his weapons yet.  He can not lead a team by himself, so he needs a solid running game, which unfortunately he won’t be able to obtain due to his line’s issues and the strength of my defensive line.

In the running game we feel like if we have our ends hold the edges, and force everything inside we are going to be very successful.  Mark Ingram should be starting for LB as he has been their only running back to achieve any success in that regard this year.  If McCaffrey is in, we will substitute Williams in at safety and move Chung to LB/S with taking Woodyard off the field.  McCaffrey is simply not a threat in the running game yet this year and we will treat him as such

In the passing game, the four man front should get some pressure up the middle Berlin’s LB formation.  We rotate in McKinley and Curry for passing downs to spell our edges with Ioannidis and Brown inside in a four man front with two fat boys running off

On the outside we will be using William Jackson and a safety to double up on Deandre Hopkins virtually every play.  We feel if we eliminate Hopkins from the picture, the rest of this passing game is really going to struggle.  Amukamara is going to get Jones  with our other safety shading his direction  while Mosley and Milano get the TE on their side of the field (Milano has shown to be a good cover backer thus far in his career).  Cupp will get covered by Robley Coleman in three wide with Humphrey getting whoever comes out as the 4th WR (we hope for Humphries for the pure name shenanigans)   If McCaffrey is on the field, Chung will replace Woodyard and have that assignment. Our non Hopkins safety will play more traditional cover one in that scenario

With this plan, we are going to force McCown to beat us over the top with George Kittle and Tyler Kroft.  We are willing to wager on being able to stop that group enough times to win

TL/DR:   Keep running game from the edges, funnel into the two LB.  Double Hopkins and make someone else beat us with McCown new to the offense

Kareem Jackson doesn't even see the field. Nice try though. BCB I noticed your game plans consist of bashing other teams a lot. Calling my group of corners just okay or average to cover up and deflect from what you are trotting out there at corner lmao.

Funny when you compare a qb who hasn't had a bye with a bunch who have and go he had more yards than the others .  DERP.  He's played an extra game.  That helps   like you're gonna complain about me trashing my opponent when you're trashing people you're not even playing

But I mean whatever, if your players are struggling.  I'm going to point that out.  I don't know why you'd have an issue with that.  My corners are also outperforming yours this year

If your plan is to play zone, brees will pick it apart.  If you're playing man with one deep safety, we'll hit a bunch of deep plays, especially against a safety in man?  Idk, even if it is Collins, how he'd fare most of the game against a wr.  Regardless my wr have been great lately while your corners haven't.  Shrug

I didn't say anything about yards. Wasn't trashing was pointing out he had better stats. Didn't say they were awful or anything like you stoop to. Because you can't just trust your gameplan.

"If they go four wide with Ginn in the game, Collins will matchup over Juju and jam him up before getting to his zone. Darian Thompson has deep zone responsibilities and will shade to the side that needs the most coverage help in man, and will have middle deep third in zone."

So basically in four wide you're playing a zone all game.  One of which your bumping a guy then running away hoping to get back to you zone in time while leaving someone else wide open where you came from?   I think brees will pick that apart all game

Nope no one is getting into that zone based on what routes you are running in time.

To be fair, I didn't think you'd go all zone against Drew Brees who picks zones apart

Who knows.  If you have Rodgers, I have Jenkins and Peters.  Would be fun to see how it'd play out   good luck rest of the way

He doesn't pick my zone apart with my talent.
