Jared Goff signed for additional 4 years/$212 Million

If it is anything like the Kirk Cousins deal, the Lions will be able to move on after two years with a cap hit that is reasonable.  That is just speculation until the contract details drop.  If it reworks the 2024 part of his current contract it could create some significant cap space this year.  I am happy for Goff though.  Hopefully he helps the Lions climb the mountain and finally get the championship that has been so elusive for the franchise.

We have to look at the short and long term elements with timing. The Sewell and St Brown contracts will also jump up at some point. Goff's will eventually get up there. If the Lions plan on signing some guys and keeping wiggle room, they might not be able to do much this year. If the roster is relatively set, having a bigger cap hit this year is more beneficial than creating new cap room and not using it.

That's a lot of money, but I think that it's the right move. This team has entered a win-now window. Now is not the time to get cute and try to play games to save money or find a new QB.

I may have felt differently had Goff not won a couple of playoff games for us, but he has proven that we can win with him.

Not to mention we would have if balls that hit his WRs hands were caught.

I think my biggest issue mentally is that I know he was tossed aside in LA after a rough year and a half there.  But since he got here he has been everything we could have asked for.  #2 in yards this year, 4th in TDs, most 1st downs, 3rd in success rate and top 10 QBR and Rating. The year before he was 6th in yards and TDs, second in INT %, 5th in 1st downs and success rate, 5th in QBR and 7th in rating.  He has outperformed everyone other than Mahomes, Allen and Brady over the last two years with Josh Reynolds as his number 2.  He earned this deal for sure.

I just think the Goff hate is funny. The whole if Goff is worth that our QB is worth more stuff is hilarious.

cap's go up every year. Contracts go up. It's just the business. The whole Jordan Love comparison is interesting too. He had decent season. One so far. Looks to be solid.

Goff has had 4 years better.

So all the hate around forum is really lost.

The next QB extension will be for more and then the next for more and so on. It's how this league works.

This is what the increases to the NFL salary cap have looked like since 2011. This is an average of 6.1% over this timeframe. It's more likely that we'll be seeing a double-digit increase in 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029, etc.

In a linear fashion, this is how the $212M extension over 4 years ($53M APY) look like and what the percentage of the cap would be. The average is around 13% - 15%.

So this is Goff + St. Brown and Sewell.

Aidan Hutchinson is a UFA and likely going to be re-signed next off-season. He's probably going to be slated for a $30M APY type of deal of his own.

One thing folks don't talk much about is Jared Goff's durability.  He took a fair number of big hits last year and but put up top 6-8 QB numbers without missing a game.  He deserves a lot of credit not letting his performance dip even when he is beat up.

That seems like a reasonably smart contract with respect to Jared Goff's age.  He turns 30 this year and hasn't shown any signs of a dropoff.  Heck, he has been playing as the best football of his career.  It isn't unreasonable to expect to stay at this level over the next two years based on how QBs are increasingly able to play further into their 30s.  There is a decent chance he could extend his high-level play into the third season of his contract given how will the NFL protects QBs at this point and the quality of our O-Line.  It is nice to be able to talk about a Lions QB being one of the better QBs in the League.

Stafford was talked about as one of better QBs in league for years. This isn't new. Difference is them surrounding QB with other talent this time around

So this is Goff + St. Brown and Sewell.

In 2026, when your percentage of the three goes way up, either Sewell or SB could be released and we would save a huge amount of cap space. I'm not saying we would or should do that. It just points to how much flexibility we have. We could easily hang on if we thought we were right there or we could have a cap casualty and reload. We should be able to sustain if we keep drafting well.

I think the differences are worth noting.  Stafford was 33 years old when he was traded to the Rams.  Despite Matthew Stafford's epic toughness, he had a significant injury history when he was traded which has started to show up again.  The Rams have even started to change their offense to be more run-oriented to adjust to Stafford being 36 years old.  The Rams basically got 1-year of "peak Matthew Stafford".

Jared Goff will turn 30 in October and has a relatively clean injury history.  It could be argued he will be at his peak for the next couple of years.  Some of that is due to how much emphasis the NFL has placed on keeping QBs clean.  Some of that is due to the Lions O-Line.  They will be getting 2-three years of "peak Jared Goff".  It is a smarter deal.

I would trade Stafford in his prime for Goff with Goffs team around him In heartbeat.

I like Goff but Stafford could take over a ballgame.

Good deal for Goff not hating deal. Hating this whole media mantra that Detroit finally has a good QB.
