UGH, its raining.  I hate playing in the rain, so many fumbles.  And of course, freaking 2nd play of the game, all of my WRs were covered so I scrambled outside, my QB gets hit hard and fumbles.  Rice recovers.  And crap, a few plays into their drive they run an option, their QB keeps it and sheds like 3 tackles. TD Rice.  Down 0-7.

KR of the year J Smith takes the return to the house!!!! 7-7.

They're driving down the field on me again, running the ball mostly.  I have them at a 3rd & 5 near the 50 yard line.  Crap they converted.  I didn't even get them to another 3rd down on the drive, TD Rice, Down 7-14.

I'm starting this drive on the 25 yard line.  I immediately get into a 3rd & 8 situation, call 5 WR wide set, no one is open.  Scramble to the right, hit WR K Little while on the run for a first.  I'm trying to get HB E Miller involved, he's chipping away but not hitting anything big.  Still, he's up to 30 yards already.  HB E Miller scores on a 1 yard run at the goal line, tied game 14-14.

End of the 1st Quarter.

Jesus they are running all over me. I can't stop them.  MLB D Bailey finally makes a play and gets a TFL on 2nd down, they are stuck with 3rd & 9 on my 18 yard line.  I get decent pressure but their QB scrambles right, he throws it up into the endzone.  Interception!!!!

HAM6bCL.jpg

*Senior SS J Smith takes 7 points off the board from them.

That was a huge pick.  I feel like this game is going to be a shoot out.  I'm consistently getting yards on them but their defense isn't giving up any big plays.  Time is starting to run out in this half, I would love to get two more possessions in this half.  I really need to try to get another possession because I screwed up my first one.  Because of that I'm passing more on this drive, and pretty effectively. I'm already in the red zone.  I throw a 15 yard pass to WR J Smith, crap their Safety undercuts the route.  Interception Rice.

Luckily I held them to a 3 & out.  They're punting, first punt of the game.  I had a 7 yard return, I'll be on my own 47 yard line with 46 second left in the first half.

Their secondary is pretty good.  I went 5 wide again on the first play and no one was open. I scrambled for 8 yards then called TO.  I only have one TO remaining.  I hit WR Hawkins dead middle of the field for a 15 yard gain but he dropped the pass.  He's had so many drops this year its infuriating.  I hit WR B O'Connor over the top for a TD!!!! 39 yard TD reception.  Up 21-14.

Only 17 seconds left in the half, but they have all 3 TOs.  Just need to keep them from getting any big plays.  Crap they ran a screen and got like 40 Yards!!!  Wait there's a flag....clipping!  Ball goes back all the way to their 32 yard line.  They threw a hail mary but it fell to the turf.

End of the 2nd Quarter.

They get the ball to start the 3rd.  First play of the half they run for a first down.  Their RB already has 82 rushing yards.  I'm not getting and pressure either, no sacks so far.  Bah, they hit their TD on a PA for 27 yards.  Moving right down the field again.  SS N Pearson sniffs out the option and nails their RB in the backfield, its a fumble!!!  LOLB Gopre recovers!!! VCU ball!

e2Qtiv1.jpg

*Defense is bending but not breaking, SS Pearson causes a fumble.

First play on offense HB E Miller breaks one for 23 yards.  This is a very important drive.  I'm going to play conservatively.  A two TD lead would be huge, another turnover devastating.  I called a 4 WR wide set on 3rd down, no one's open again so I scramble right.  WR O' Connor comes streaking across the screen, he has a step on his guy.  I hit him about 15 yards deep, he sheds the defender and runs all the way in for another TD!  UP 28-14.

Down two TDs, I hope they abandon the run and start passing more.  That way I can pin my ears back and get after the QB.  First play of the drive, they call a deep pass play, no ones open.  NT Brown gets a coverage sack for a 2 yard loss.  First sack of the game.  Very next play they convert a first down. UGH.  The good news is they haven't ran once on this drive yet.  NT Brown gets his 2nd sack of the drive!  4th down!  They're punting.

Time to churn some clock.  There's still 1:48 left in the 3rd Quarter, I'm not chasing stats I'm just looking for the win in this one.  I turned on conservative clock.  Problem is HB E Miller keeps ripping off huge runs.  He just had a 35 yarder.  He's over 100 yards now.

End of the 3rd Quarter.

First play of the 4th HB E Miller gets 8 yards and is in the endzone for another TD.  Up 35-14.

I just need to prevent big plays on defense and let the clock do its work.  They're moving down the field again, but having to dink and dunk to do it.  4:30 left in the game.  NT Brown gets in for his 3rd sack of the game!  The pressure was created by LE Armstrong though,  the QB moved to avoid Armstrong and ran right into Brown.  Rice is all the way down to my 4 yard line now, but this drive is taking a ton of time.  Their QB scrambles outside again, LOLB Gopre gets him for another sack.  Only 2 min left now.  The next play Rice fails to convert the first and turns the ball over on downs.

HB E Miller runs the clock out, and that's it. VCU has won the national title!!!!!

Players Graduating

WR Josh Smith (83 OVR)

Career Stats: 72 receptions, 824 receiving yards, 13 TDs

- Smith signed with my second recruiting class, he was a JUCO (JR) that came in a 76 OVR.  I targeted him because I needed a guy that could help out right away since my WR core was so thin.  He was a solid #3 WR, and had consistent hands.  I haven't been able to land a bunch of quality WR prospects so Smith leave could hurt.

OC Tyler Fisher (77 OVR)

Career Stats: 3 Pancakes, 0 sacks allowed

- Tyler Fisher came to my program as a transfer after my first season.  He was a career backup that didn't really ever see the field.  He developed into a quality backup though.

CB Curtis Thomas (85 OVR)

Career Stats: 115 tackles, 20 TFL, 0 sacks, 1 INT, 8 def, 0 FF, 1 TD

- Curtis Thomas was kind of like WR Smith, I signed him because I needed someone who could contribute right away.  Thomas was a JUCO (JR) that came in as a 78 OVR CB and he definitely helped me out in the slot.  He didn't have a bunch of INTs, but he was a good run defender for a CB, which is important for a slot CB.  Luckily I've been able to land some quality CB recruits so losing Thomas to graduation shouldn't hurt that much.

RE Anthony Turner (79 OVR)

Career Stats: 65 tackles, 35 TFL, 18 sacks, 0 INTs, 2 def, 1 FF, 0 TD

- Turner was a JUCO (SO) in my first recruiting class, and came in as a 70 OVR DE.  He was the first Dlineman I had that could get pressure on the QB, he finished with 18 career sacks.  He started for two seasons before losing his job to Armstrong the past year.  He was a quality starter when I was in the early part of my build but couldn't compete against the increased competition level when I changed conferences.

SS Joe Smith (88 OVR)

Career Stats: 167 tackles, 18 TFL, 3 sacks, 2 INTs, 6 def, 0 FF, 0 TD

- Smith was part of my very first recruiting class.  He was initially a 76 OVR JUCO (SO), so he didn't progress that much in his time here.  I was hoping he'd be a big time star for my defense due to his impressive 6'7" frame, but he didn't make a lot of impact plays.  That being said he was a solid starting Safety for his 3 years with the program.

Coaching Changes

-          I've been offered a 7-year contract extension to stay at VCU and accepted.

-          I have two new coordinators.  My former OC R Caragher left for the Head Coach position at Southern Miss.  Also, my former DC T Beckhman left for the Head Coach position at Nevada.

My new coordinators are Level 16 OC B Harsin, and Level 10 DC D Steckel.

Transfer Requests/Declaring Early

-  WR Kenny Little wants to declare early for the NFL Draft.  He's 90 OVR but is only projected as a 7th round pick.  I'm going to try to talk him out of leaving.  UPDATE - Little decided to stay for his Senior year.  Thank god, my WR core would have taken a huge blow with him gone.

- ROLB Demarcus Smith wants to transfer. He's only 66 OVR and I have a logjam at the position, so I'm going to let him leave.

- MLB Derrick Dortch wants to transfer as well.  He's a solid 73 OVR, but I should have an elite recruit coming in at this position and I have the incumbent starter Bailey returning.  I'm going to let Dortch leave.

- I don't have anyone who wants to transfer to my school this year.

Draft Results

- No one from VCU went drafted.

- I was curious so I looked, neither did Rice.

Signing Day – End of Year 4

VCU - #6 Overall Recruiting Class

I wasn't trying to sign so many recruits, this was supposed to be a high quality low quantity class, but the computer had other ideas.  Still, I feel like I met some big needs on my roster in this class.  I found a real high quality prospect at NT, a picked up some WRs which I really needed.  MLB needed an upgrade too.  I missed out on any TE upgrade though.

18 Total Prospects

5 Stars – 2

4 Stars – 7

3 Stars – 8

2 Stars – 1

ATH Dan O'Neal – 5 STARS (1) – 6’7” 254 lbs – 79 OVR (79 OVR LOLB)

72 SPD, 63 AG, 86 ACC, 74 PM, 60 FM, 75 MC, 75 ZC, 71 PRS, 58 CTH, 85 TAK, 82 PUR

-          O'Neal was the #1 recruit in the nation, of any position.  He has great size, but I'm not sure exactly what to do with him.  He's an elite OLB recruit except for the fact that he only has 72 Speed. His pass rushing skills are pretty mediocre to put him full time at DE.  So he's a bit of a tweener.  Ultimately I think I'll end up with him at OLB because of his coverage instincts.  Idk whether to redshirt him or not either.  I'm not sure I'll know what to do with him until Position Changes.

UPDATE - he would have been an 80 OVR DE, but with his weak pass rushing moves I felt like he was better at OLB.

MLB Brian Moore – 5 STARS (7) – 6’3” 221 lbs – 81 OVR

76 SPD, 55 AG, 87 ACC, 85 TAK, 83 HP, 85 PUR, 74 ZC, 82 BS

-          Moore's a 5 star recruit at a position of need.  I haven't been able to land a big time MLB recruit until now.  I wish Moore was a little bigger and faster, but he has really good instincts and should be all around the ball.  He'll likely start 4 years for me at MLB.  Not redshirting, starting right away.

ATH Willie Hall – 4 STARS (62) – 6’0” 200 lbs – 73 OVR (74 OVR WR)

95 SPD, 85 AG, 88 ACC, 67 CTH, 85 SPEC, 69 RLS, 68 RR, 58 CRY

-          Hall can't play defense, so he will be an offensive skill player.  Looking at his 58 Carry rating, he'd make a pretty lousy RB.  So he'll be a WR.  He needs to work on his catching and route running, but his speed will be an asset.  Not sure if I'll need him or not this year.  He could probably use a Redshirt year to learn how to catch.

ATH Ryan Stokes – 4 STARS (100) – 6’1” 189 lbs – 78 OVR (78 OVR CB)

92 SPD, 89 AG, 90 ACC, 70 CTH, 88 MC, 84 ZC, 82 PRS, 84 PR, 54 TAK

-          Stokes looks like a CB.  He has good coverage skills for an incoming Freshman and decent athleticism.  His poor tackling will likely keep him from being a Safety, but I might look at him at FS during Position Changes to see what he looks like there.  He does have 76 Pursuit and 84 Play Recognition, so if he could just learn to tackle he might be a solid Safety.  With his high end coverage skills though his best position is probably CB.  Most likely Redshirting.

ATH Adam Edwards – 4 STARS (141) – 6’2” 232 lbs – 77 OVR (57 OVR FB)

75 SPD, 58 AG, 72 ACC, 83 TKL, 78 HP, 82 PUR, 71 MC, 71 ZC, 53 PRS, 48 CTH

-          I'm not sure exactly what to do with Edwards.  He's a bit undersized for linebacker, and he's kind of slow for that position as well.  He does have 77 Power Moves and 84 Finesse Moves, so he could serve as an extremely undersized pass rushing specialist at DE, but that really isn't my style.  Still I might have to consider that. He's pretty much 100% redshirting regardless of where he ends up.

UPDATE - the OVR is misleading, he actually has incredibly high blocking ratings which I couldn't see before Position Changes.  He has 82 PB, 76 RB, and 75 IB, which are all higher than any FB on my roster.  He'll never catch a pass out of the backfield or run the ball, but I don't ask my FB to do that.  All I need him to do is block and he's excellent at that.  Definitely Reshirting him now to give him a year to learn.  This might mean several cuts at FB now.

DT  Kyle Hall – 4 STARS (187) – 6’5” 330 lbs – 78 OVR

65 SPD, 59 AG, 72 ACC, 83 PM, 82 FM, 77 BS, 77 TAK

-          Hall is a massive beast.  I'd love to start him right away, but Brown was solid at NT last year.  I'll have to see how much Brown progresses in the offseason before I can make that decision. If Brown starts, Hall will Redshirt.  But it would be a shame not to let this 6'5" monster destroy some Olines next year.

WR  Riley Harvey – 4 STARS (238) – 6’2” 177 lbs – 66 OVR

91 SPD, 75 AG, 86 ACC, 59 CTH, 71 SPEC, 65 RLS, 74 RR, 69 CRY

-          I didn't sign this guy, the computer for some reason gave him to me on signing day.  I hate that the computer does this, I intentionally was trying to have a smaller recruiting class because of how full my roster is.  I will likely cut this guy.

WR  Derron Fowler – 4 STARS (264) – 6’0” 180 lbs – 74 OVR

89 SPD, 85 AG, 89 ACC, 71 CTH, 55 SPEC, 58 RLS, 81 RR, 93 CRY

-          Fowler isn't special athletically, but he can catch the ball.  He's also a solid route runner and doesn't fumble. He looks like a solid #4-5 WR to me.  I will have to see how Hawkins progresses before I'll know if Fowler will be Redshirted or not. I'd rather preserve a year of eligibility for Willie Hall, so Fowler will likely be active this year as a reserve.

MLB  Pat Miller – 4 STARS (269) – 5’10” 241 lbs – 75 OVR

83 SPD, 72 AG, 93 ACC, 74 TAK, 77 HP, 91 PUR, 69 ZC, 79 BS

-          Another guy I didn't sign myself, the computer assigned him to me.  Although he's undersized he's actually a solid athlete for the MLB position.  Still, I have a bunch of bodies already at that position, plus I recruited 2 more in this class, so Miller likely gets cut. I don't feel bad about cutting guys I wasn't recruiting that the computer assigned me.

MLB  Larue Lynch – 3 STARS (399) – 6’5” 252 lbs – 73 OVR

84 SPD, 67 AG, 84 ACC, 73 TAK, 81 HP, 85 PUR, 71 ZC, 74 BS

-          Lynch I did recruit, because he's freaking huge and a solid athlete.  He's like an NFL prototype size LBer.  He's raw and will need to be coached up, but  he could be dominant in time.  Definitely Redshirting.

OT  Rob Stover – 3 STARS (401) – 6’6” 306 lbs – 76 OVR

84 STR, 89 ACC, 81 PB, 81 RB, 78 IB

-          I've really had a hard time finding OTs in this Dynasty mode. Stover is a really good prospect though.  He has good size, solid Strength and decent blocking rating across the board.  I wouldn't be worried if I had to start him this year, but I don't think I'll have to.  Likely Redshirt, unless RT Owens really doesn't progress in the offseason.  But after a Redshirt year he's likely a 4 year starter.

OG William Copeland – 3 STARS (633) – 6’7” 327 lbs – 69 OVR

81 STR, 84 ACC, 76 PB, 76 RB, 74 IB

-          I was really hurting for interior Olineman depth, and Copeland will provide that.  He's more of a long term upside play based off of his size, and the JUCO I signed (discussed later) will likely allow Copeland to Redshirt this year.

WR  Mark Randle – 3 STARS (699) – 6’0” 189 lbs – 64 OVR

unknown stats - not scouted

-          I didn't recruit this guy, the computer assigned him to me.  100% getting cut.

SS Chad Randle – 3 STARS (868 JUCO SO) – 6’3” 194 lbs – 77 OVR

94 SPD, 86 AG, 91 ACC, 75 TKL, 71 HP, 75 ZC

-          I'm really excited about Randle.  He needs some work on his zone coverage, but his athleticism is off the charts for a Safety.  I believe he'll start right away for me at SS as my starter there just graduated.  His speed will bring a new element to the secondary, as my previous starter there was more of an in the box only guy.

OT Ryan Fogle – 3 STARS (876) – 6’6” 318 lbs – 71 OVR

79 STR, 91 ACC, 78 PB, 79 RB, 80 IB

-          Fogle was signed early on with little effort.  He has good size and is relatively athletic for the position, but he isn't very strong (which is the most important attribute for a Olineman IMO).  He'll likely always be a backup due to his poor strength.  Likely Redshirt.

OG Earl Miles – 3 STARS (1434 JUCO SO) – 6’1” 294 lbs – 80 OVR

88 STR, 92 ACC, 80 PB, 86 RB, 80 IB

-          Miles is an elite Olineman prospect.  He's strong and quick, and has 80+ on all blocking skills. He's not very big but that doesn't matter as he'll likely be a backup his entire career.  Not Redshirting, he'll be the primary swing Guard backup this year.  He can probably backup at Center too.

OG MIchael Todd – 3 STARS (1454) – 6’3” 318 lbs – 60 OVR

unknown stats - not scouted

-         This is really frustrating that the computer added so many guys to my recruiting class.  Todd looks like he sucks and is almost 100% getting cut.

FB Andy Thomas – 2 STARS (2163) – 6’0” 243 lbs – 67 OVR

71 STR, 70 ACC, 71 PB, 68 RB, 72 IB

-         Thomas is not an elite FB prospect, but he's a long term play at the position.  Thompson was solid as the starter at FB last year, so Thomas can Redshirt this year.  Russell might get cut if he doesn't progress.  I'll most likely only carry 2 FBs, so Thomas or Russell are at risk of getting cut.
