MaddHatter
With all the discussions going on, I figured I'd work through a mock offseason for the Cowboys, this time with 2 different scenarios. In the first scenario, we are all-in. In the 2nd scenario, we trade away Dak and start to rebuild. First up, the ALL-IN Mock.... Scenario 1: We're ALL-IN (flashback to 2006 and Parcell's poker chip shirt) Contracts: Convert Zack Martin, Michael Gallup, Trevon Diggs, DeMarcus Lawrence, Brandin Cooks, Terence Steele, and Donovan Wilson's base salary as written into their contract, freeing up $48m in Cap Space. New cap is 227m and Top 51 is 220m putting us 40.7m under the cap. Extend Dak Prescott (5yr/250m) and CeeDee Lamb (4yr/$120m) - new cap room is 90.5m Release Leighton Vander Esch - adding $2.5m to the cap - new cap room is $93m Resign: (Contracts based on "Market Value" from Spotrac) Tyron Smith (3yr/18m) Stephon Gilmore (2yr/22m) Johnathan Hankins (2yr/3m) Tyler Biadasz (3yr/5m) Dorance Armstrong (2yr/12m) Trent Sieg (2yr/1m) new cap space approximately $66m Free Agency: (Contracts based on "Market Value" from Spotrac) Antoine Winfield Jr (5yr/80m) - FS Derrick Henry (2yr/8m) - RB Patrick Queen (5yr/90m) - ILB Odell Beckham Jr. (1yr/11m) - WR Fletcher Cox (1yr/11m) - DT Tyler Boyd (3yr/25m) - WR Lavonte David (1yr/4m) - LB Azeez Al-Shaair (3yr/10m) - LB new cap space approximately $10m Draft: (based on 7-round Sim on PFF) 1.24 - Jackson Powers-Johnson (C/G) Oregon 2.56 - Tyler Nubin (S) Minnesota 3.87 - Braden Fiske (DT) Florida State 5.172 - Ray Davis (RB) Kentucky 6.212 - Dallin Holker (TE) Colorado State 7.230 - Brandon Coleman (T) TCU 7.241 - Eugene Asante (LB) Auburn Final Roster: QB - Dak Prescott, Trey Lance, Cooper Rush RB - Derrick Henry, Ray Davis, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, Snoop Conner FB - Hunter Luepke WR - CeeDee Lamb, Odell Beckham Jr, Racer McMath, Kavontae Turpin TE - Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker, Dallin Holker, Peyton Hendershot, John Stephens, Princeton Fant LT - Tyron Smith, TJ Bass, Josh Ball LG - Tyler Smith, Brandon Coleman, Dakota Shepley C - Jackson Powers-Johnson, Tyler Biadasz RG - Zack Martin, Brock Hoffman RT - Terrence Steele, Matt Waletzko, Brandon Coleman, Asim Richards, Earl Bostick WR2 - Michael Gallup, Jalen Tolbert, Martavis Bryant WR3 - Tyler Boyd, Brandin Cooks, Jalen Brooks, David Durden, Jalen Cropper LDE - Micah Parsons, Dorance Armstrong, Tyrus Wheat, Durrell Johnson LDT - Brandon Fisk, Osa Odighizuwa,William Prevlion RDT - Mazi Smith, Fletcher Cox, Johnathan Hankins, Sam Williams RDE - DeMarcus Lawrence, Chauncey Golston, Viliami Fehoko Jr. OLB - Demarion Overshown, Buddy Johnson ILB - Patrick Queen, Lavonte David OLB - Azeez Al-Shaair, Damone Clark, Eugene Asante LCB - Trevon Diggs, Nahsohn Wright NCB - Daron Bland, Eric Scott Jr. FS - Antoine Winfield Jr., Malik Hooker, Juanyeh Thomas SS - Tyler Nubin, Donovan Wilson, Sheldrick Redwin, Josh Butler RCB - Stephon Gilmore, Israel Mukuamu P - Bryan Anger K - Brandon Aubrey LS - Trent Sieg Summary: We shore up our weak spot on offense with a great 1-2 combo at RB, give Dak all the weapons he can dream of with Boyd and OBJ being great compliments to Lamb and Gallup and we solidify our offensive line. On defense, we turn a weakness at IDL into a strength with some great depth to keep a constant rotation and plenty of fresh bodies in the middle, with Cox, Hankins, Mazi being our run cloggers and Fisk and Osa being our penetrators. We also bring in Queen and Al-Shaair to clean up our poor run D and use David on obvious passing downs for his great coverage ability and football IQ. Lastly, we completely revamp our safeties with Winfield being an elite centerfielder and letting Nubin compete with Hooker and Wilson for the starting spot opposite of him, with Nubin likely winning the spot with his solid run defense and ability to cover larger WR's and TE's in man. Scenario 2: Time to Rebuild Contracts: Convert Zack Martin, Michael Gallup, Trevon Diggs, DeMarcus Lawrence, Brandin Cooks, Terence Steele, and Donovan Wilson's base salary as written into their contract, freeing up $48m in Cap Space. New cap is 227m and Top 51 is 220m putting us 40.7m under the cap. Extend CeeDee Lamb (4yr/$120m) - new cap room is 50.5m Release Leighton Vander Esch - adding $2.5m to the cap - new cap room is $53m Resign: (Contracts based on "Market Value" from Spotrac) Tyron Smith (3yr/18m) Stephon Gilmore (2yr/22m) Johnathan Hankins (2yr/3m) Tyler Biadasz (3yr/5m) Dorance Armstrong (2yr/12m) Trent Sieg (2yr/1m) new cap space approximately $26m Trade: Dak Prescott to Chicago Bears for Justin Fields, 1.1, 1.9 and 2025 2nd (via CAR) new cap space approximately $21m Trade 1.1 to New England for 1.3 and 3.68 Trade 1.24 and 5.172 to Kansas City for 1.31 and 2.63 Free Agency: Lavonte David (1yr/4m) - LB Azeez Al-Shaair (3yr/10m) - LB Draft: 1.3 - Marvin Harrison Jr. (WR) Ohio State 1.9 - Olumuyiwa Fashanu (T) Penn State 1.31 - Byron Murphy II (DT) Texas 2.56 - Kamren Kinchens (S) Miami 2.63 - Jonathon Brooks (RB) Texas 3.68 - Payton Wilson (LB) NC State 3.87 - Brandon Fiske (DT) Florida State 6.212 - Isaiah Davis (RB) SD State 7.230 - Jordan McGee (LB) Temple 7.241 - Josh Proctor (S) Ohio State Depth Chart: QB - Trey Lance, Justin Fields, Cooper Rush RB - Jonathan Brooks, Isaiah Davis, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, Snoop Conner FB - Hunter Luepke WR - CeeDee Lamb, Racer McMath, Kavontae Turpin TE - Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker, Peyton Hendershot, John Stephens, Princeton Fant LT - Tyron Smith, TJ Bass, Josh Ball LG - Tyler Smith, Brandon Coleman, Dakota Shepley C - Tyler Biadasz RG - Zack Martin, Brock Hoffman RT - Olumuyiwa Fashanu, Terrence Steele, Matt Waletzko, Asim Richards, Earl Bostick WR2 - Marvin Harrison Jr., Jalen Tolbert, Martavis Bryant WR3 - Michael Gallup, Brandon Cooks, Jalen Brooks, David Durden, Jalen Cropper LDE - Micah Parsons, Dorance Armstrong, Tyrus Wheat, Durrell Johnson LDT - Byron Murphy II, Brandon Fiske, William Prevlion RDT - Mazi Smith, Johnathan Hankins, Osa Odighizuwa, Sam Williams RDE - DeMarcus Lawrence, Chauncey Golston, Viliami Fehoko Jr. OLB - Demarion Overshown, Buddy Johnson ILB - Lavonte David, Payton Wilson, OLB - Azeez Al-Shaair, Damone Clark, Jordan McGee LCB - Trevon Diggs, Nahsohn Wright NCB - Daron Bland, Eric Scott Jr. FS - Malik Hooker, Juanyeh Thomas, Josh Proctor SS - Kamren Kinchens, Donovan Wilson, Sheldrick Redwin, Josh Butler RCB - Stephon Gilmore, Israel Mukuamu P - Bryan Anger K - Brandon Aubrey LS - Trent Sieg Summary: We opt not to do much of anything in Free Agency with limited cap space due to Dak's contract, but will have a solid $10-20m in rollover for next year. We bring in Justin and let him compete with Trey for the starting QB job. McCarthy is in the last season of his current contract so it doesn't make sense to draft a QB at 1.1 for a lame duck season when we're most likely looking for a new coach next season who will want his own guys. If McCarty can turn Lance or Fields into gold and earn a new contract, even better. Instead, we add a generational talent in MHJR to partner with Lamb and add our future LT in Olumuyiwa who will start at RT and be the immediate backup to Tyron at LT should he have any injuries. On Defense, we again add some serious depth with both Byron Murphy and Brandon Fiske, in rotation with Johnathan Hankins, Osa Odighizuwa, and Mazi Smith. We solidify our 2nd level with Lavonte David and Azeez Al-Shaair as the veterans to bring up Demarion Overshown and Payton Wilson. At Safety we add Kamren Kinchens to partner with Malik hooker and Donovan Wilson to prevent our top from getting blown off.
PincheJimmy
I’ll take Option 1 option 2 looks great , but why would Chi even consider trading 1.1 , 1.9, and Fields for Dak?

Detroit got two firsts and a young former first round QB with playoff experience for a 30+ yr old Stafford who was good but never great. Daks coming off a MVP-caliber season and Fields is struggling. If they don’t believe in Drake and don’t want the drama of Caleb, they may see this as an opportunity to instantly compete in the NFCN

Agreed and I am a staunch advocate for the Boys extending Dak and riding him till his play drops off (5-8yrs?) but some people wanna see what life without Dak might look like, so I threw that out there too
WizardHawk
I’ll believe an “all-in” when I see it. My guess is it’s more of the same. Dallas will re-sign Dak and CD and give Tyron another 1 yr deal. After that, we’ll see them let guys walk hoping for a comp pick and then sign a handful of tier 4 FAs. Maybe a vet tier 3 guy who holds out, ala Gilmore (the splash).

I’d ask for their first and second in 2025 instead, and I’d draft a QB and then trade up for Marvin Harrison, Jr. since the ammunition to do both would be there. That said, I doubt that it would happen because of the Trey Lance trade. The Jones family aren’t forward thinkers, so it’s unlikely that they’d consider creating competition for the newly vacated QB1 spot. It’s really never been their M.O. They hand players roster spots and ride them until they die, which is one of the reasons why we never win anything.

If the Jones were going to let McCarthy stay long term and develop a young QB, I could see them going with Caleb, but it’s rare for a team to draft a QB with a lame duck Head Coach because it forces a QB to have two offensive coordinators in two years. In that regard it'd be quite similar to what most here think of Dak. However. I do think anyone comparing an MVP runner up and 3 time(or 4 time) MVP candidate to Goffs horrid performance following his Superbowl appearance is absolutely insane... Long story short. Not quite the same situation. No way Chicago would deal a QB they could probably get a top 5 pick for and a top 5 pick together for a veteran QB with a huge contract when they have Fields future in the NFL and Caleb Williams potential in the NFL both staring them in the face In this scenario. We would be the Rams, looking to unload Dak and his contract at any cost and essentially be paying draft capital for someone to just take him from us. And that's never going to happen, anymore than Chicago giving up Caleb Williams and Justin Fields for Dak Edited February 9 by Dallas94Ware
Dallas94Ware
Oh and for the record if #2 was an option I'm all in for that. But I'd be in for it even if we get nothing for Dak. I'm just ready to move on. I'm not anti Dak and think he takes way too much heat for how good he's shown he can be...but age, contract, injury history, and lack of playoff success just has me ready to turn the page and start the next chapter instead of adding pages to the current chapter And I'm eager to see what Lance can do. He's still very young and has otherworldly levels of "bonus factors" with his size, athleticism, velocity, and ability to move the chains with his legs. And in his limited time as a starter, he showed some promise...it was just very raw and needed a load of hard work. He's still quite intriguing. I'd live with sinking or swimming with him at the helm, knowing Arch Manning is really just a couple years away. If Lance bombs, and the team sucks as a result..they get a solid pick in 2025, which could easily be traded for capital in 2026 along with pricy veterans who could pull in more draft capital. And instead of rolling the dice on one of the top guys in 2025, you can roll the dice on NFL QB royalty in 2026.
