Some early notes on Baker Mayfield.

Baker Mayfield  | 5SR |  DOB: 04/14/95 | 6’0” 220e | Oklahoma
Position: Quarterback  |  Projection/Grade: NA  |  Comp: NA

Games Evaluated: Ohio State (2017), UTEP (2017)
Background: Austin, Texas native. Three-star recruit according to Rivals. Communications major.  Walked on at Texas Tech and won the starting job as a freshman and started 7 of 8 games played but was later benched. Took issue with his standing at Texas Tech and transferred to Oklahoma as a walk-on without assurance from their coaching staff. Made the team and took a redshirt. Started all 13 games as a sophomore. Started all 13 games as a junior. Voted a 2017 team captain. In February of 2017 was arrested for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, fleeing and resisting arrest in Arkansas where an officer came to the scene of a fight Mayfield claims he was trying to break up. In 2014 his mother and aunt were seriously injured as passengers in a car accident that took the lives of two people. Father played quarterback and punter at Houston. Older brother was a baseball walk-on at Texas A&M. Models his game after Brett Favre, Russell Wilson and Drew Brees.

Positives: Sturdy build which is maxed out. Thick ankles and strong calves. Height to weight ratio looks to be ideal. Quick feet that never stop moving. A highly flexible athlete who can contort his body, drop his weight and quickly balance his body after contact. Has bursts of speed to pick up large chunks of yardage and is a threat running the ball. Reacts to his surroundings like a rabbit in the pocket and is a master at eluding pressure and extending plays. Sheds arm tackles and does not go down easy. Fearless inside and outside the pocket. Has solid arm strength and throws darts to the short and intermediate areas. Understands how and when to feather, float and shotgun the ball to his receivers. Shows consistent and accurate ball placement. Generally puts the ball in the perfect window and makes it look easy. Has a short, quick release on his short to intermediate passes. Especially accurate throwing on the move and looks comfortable throwing out of difficult positions and angles. Thrives inside and outside the structure of the offense and oozes creativity and regularly makes magic happen when the play breaks down. Can demoralize and frustrate defenses with his mentality of never giving up on a play. Processes what he sees quickly, shows comfortability going left to right and working through his options. Always moving his head and rarely sits on one receiver for very long. Moves up in the pocket. Footwork is generally consistent - especially in the pocket. Had responsibilities within the offense at Oklahoma and made changes at the line of scrimmage. Made strides each year with his development in the pocket showing poise and limiting mistakes. Dedicated in the weight room. Known for being fun and highly competitive. Plays the game with emotion and passion. Undersized growing up and had to overcome many hurdles on the field in order to prove himself and carries a chip on his shoulder. Comes from a supportive, competitive and laidback family. Known for his brash on-field temperament towards the opponent. Admittedly mischievous. Leader with the rare personality and ability to connect with all his teammates. Takes the blame when things go wrong and gives teammates credit. Handles the media like a professional.

Negatives: On the short side and might not be six feet tall. Short arms. Looks to have smaller hands than similarly sized successful quarterbacks at the next level. Lacks long speed. Operated exclusively out of the shotgun. Sometimes sidearms the ball depending on the type of throw. Will likely always struggle with batted down passes at the line of scrimmage. Lacks a natural cannon arm and has to put his body into deep throws. Has evolved from running the football often to staying in the pocket but needs to learn to throw away the football and give up on plays. Off-field incident highlights his immature and impulsive side. Has had to apologize multiple times for his behavior. His father was very involved with him in college and ruffled some feathers. Fully admits people are too sensitive and that he will offend people - may have to soften his antics at the next level.

Outlook: N/A

Came across Missouri State RB Calan Crowder on DraftBreakdown. He's an interesting back. I like him based on the little I've seen.

Calan Crowder  | 5SR |  DOB: 10/22/94 | 6’0” 205e | Missouri State
Position: Runningback  |  Projection: NA  |  Comp: NA

Games Evaluated: Missouri (2017)
Background: Tulsa, Oklahoma native. Not a ranked recruit according to 247Sports. Communications major. Started 9 of 12 games as a freshman. Played in 11 games as a sophomore. Started 5 of 10 games played as a junior. Has two siblings. Father played football at Oklahoma State.

Positives: Good height with a solid and filled out frame. Has some bulk in his thighs, backside and muscled arms. Body is proportioned. Height to weight ratio looks better on tape than his listing. Relatively quick feet. Has some speed to gash defenses. Can lean his hips to lower himself. Smooth lower body movement and has fluidity in his body movement. Runs controlled and square. Lowers himself on contact and takes on contact intelligently and usually pushes it forward. Patient runner who normally follows the best path to success. Throws his weight around in pass protection and thoroughly enjoys it. Turns himself into a well-controlled bullet cutting blockers downfield in the support of his teammates.

Negatives: A little thin in the legs from the knee down. Lacks explosion out of his cuts. Not a dynamic runner who can change course. Unable to completely drop his weight and has a little hip tightness. Has never carried the load and has limited career production. Overaged and will turn 24 years old in his rookie season.

Outlook: NA

Really wanting Sutton now.

So Sutton's first year playing WR resulted in last years production? That's crazy impressive, and also makes a lot more sense now as to why he has such up and down games this year with the added attention from defenses.

Tremendous breakdown regarding Mayfield. Outside height, he seems to have basically the entire package. He really reminds me of Drew Brees with a bit less arm and a bit more athleticism. But the height isn't the only clear similarity, their personalities are similar in that each is a true leader on and off the field. That commanding but not over-the-top type presence. And a similar ability to really feel the pocket, in fact that's what stands out most about Baker. He has the pocket presence that all QB's need to really be elite.

I would not be surprised if he has the best career of any QB taken in this draft. Many will disagree but I love his fit in Cleveland. He has the ability to be the face of a franchise immediately and not wilt under that immense pressure, and has a NFL ready game with a body that should hold up well taking the hits. The upside may not be quite the same as with Darnold, Rosen and especially Jackson, but he has immediate payoff potential and isn't a slouch talent wise either.

Made a correction. I had my profile mixed up. Has two full seasons starting. Not sure how I mixed that up.

Brief report on Trevor Darling in his 2017 games against Duke.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13RgfxMu4CW0NKMZebZ88cgg7b7MlszjfzXxEeId7Y34/edit?usp=sharing

Trevor Darling | 4SR |  DOB: 05/--/95 | 6’4” 315e | Miami
Position: Guard  |  Projection: NA  |  Comp: NA

Games Evaluated: Duke (2017)

Background: Miami, Florida native. Four-star recruit according to 247Sports. Major is unknown. Started 5 of 8 games as a freshman. Started 13 games as a sophomore. Played in 11 of 13 games as a junior. During the spring of 2016 Darling was arrested with a teammate for impeding traffic and resisting arrest without violence. Darling was blocking traffic and ignored the officers demands to move several times but charges were later dismissed.

Positives: Has the measurables you look for in an interior player. Solid arm length and big hands. Sturdy build from top to bottom. Height to weight ratio is ideal. Has a wide base with the ability to anchor and hold steady in pass protection. Competes hard in smash-mouth run situations and isn’t afraid to give up his body and get dirty. Competes throughout the game with consistent effort. Has experience playing guard and tackle and has moved around the line. Has an NFL-ready belly and has no problems keeping his weight up or losing weight when needed. Simple guy. Team oriented and unselfish. Pushes up his teammates.

Negatives: High-cut build with especially long legs. Flat-assed. Sluggish feet and struggles to move in space. Lack of lower body flexibility hinders him in space where he rarely lines up and hits the strike zone due to defenders anticipating him and adjusting. Often makes contact outside and off balance letting defenders move around him. Athletic limitations hinder his ability to block multiple defenders on one play. Struggles against speed inside. Spends too much time in the turf due to balance issues. Rarely hooks, holds and destroys defenders. Too content to let the defender go and not finish the block with violence. Clearly wears down and lets much smaller defenders humiliate him late in the game.

Outlook: NA

Rashaad Penny report based on 2017 Stanford game.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13RgfxMu4CW0NKMZebZ88cgg7b7MlszjfzXxEeId7Y34/edit?usp=sharing

Rashaad Penny  | 4SR |  DOB: 02/02/96  | 5’10” 220e | San Diego State
Position: Runningback  |  Projection: NA  |  Comp: NA

Games Evaluated:
Background: California native. Three-star recruit according to ESPN. Communications major. Played in 13 games as a freshman. Played in 14 games as a sophomore. Played in 14 games as a junior. Voted a 2017 team captain. Older brother Elijhaa Penny played at Idaho and also the NFL.

Positives: Ideal middle-sized running back size with a strong, filled out frame from top to bottom. Thick thighs, big bubble and strong ankles with good upper body musculature. Ideal body proportion and height to weight ratio. Above average speed and is especially light on his feet. Gashes defenses for big gains and has the juice to take it to the house. Can slightly lean down his hips in traffic and turn them easily in space. Runs with exception vision. Works between the tackles and almost always picks the best route. Glides from gap to gap with little wasted motion. Reacts to what he sees quickly. Understands his limitations and generally makes positive yards. A north to south runner who doesn’t wear dance shoes. Patient and forces the issue when necessary. Occasionally makes a subtle move to avoid contact and shows some niftiness/nuance. Runs hard from start to finish and handles a lot of contact from front seven defenders. Shows good hands and looks natural catching the ball. Regularly moved around and utilized as a receiver in different alignments. Shows want-to and physicality in pass protection. Comes from a good family and there are no off-field concerns of note. A team leader who has the respect of teammates.

Negatives: Lower body flexibility leaves a lot to be desired. Cannot drop his hips. Lacks a different dimension as a runner because he cannot sink his weight and change direction. Physical limitations generally keep him walled between his tackles. Lacks contact balance and runs upright which causes him to go down much too easy. Doesn’t bounce off contact and get a second life. Too often gets tripped up and falls down. Due to athletic limitations and pad level he doesn’t generate enough power. Would like to see more violence and assertiveness in some of his runs. Lacks of lower body flexibility hurts his effectiveness in the pass game and will limit his ability to utilize his long speed at the next level. Despite his vision and body proportion his running style and athletic  limitations will lend itself to a lot of hits. May struggle to stay healthy.

By reading this report, sounds like a 5th-6th round grade. I had a 6 on him entering the season, haven't watched him yet as the feature guy. Thanks for sharing.
