The deal with taking the team to ******* Baltimore and leaving the Brownies with nothing is what pulled me in. You got your team back eventually. That must have been incredible for all of you.

I'm still angry about the whole thing and never felt appreciation at all for getting a much disadvantaged expansion team from the deal. We were basically given garbage in return for a storied franchise.

If we ever get good, it will lessen the blow, but I’m completely with you. It was a true crock of sh*t from the NFL.

The concept of relocation in American sports is a disgrace and blows my mind to be honest. There’s been really only a single high profile case of it over here with our football and in that instance, it was a third division team (roughly around the 50th biggest out of the 92 teams in our Football League system) and at the time they had average attendance of just 5k. So in that sense, not comparable to the Browns. But a relocation all the same.

I think it’s the worst thing about your sporting system (best being the Draft) and should be illegal altogether but at the very least, there should be some sort of protection of historical, legacy franchises. The Browns and Cleveland are one of the most important football teams and cities there is. I knew this even when I had only a rudimentary understanding of the sport.

To clarify, that’s one instance of a team being moved to an entirely different city. Our team West Ham recently moved to the national athletics stadium that was used for the Olympic Games, but that was only a couple of miles relocation and still remains in our historic catchment area. It’s not a football stadium though and us fans basically see this current iteration of the club as “West Ham London”, a sort of commercialised bastardisation of our historic club aimed at solely making money for our worse than Jimmy Haslam level scumbag owners.

In that way, we can really relate to what you have gone through with the Browns.

Especially sad as the Browns and West Ham are eerily similar and probably have the best, most passionate fan bases in their sports.
