People keep talking about how Smallwood can't stay healthy. Last time I remember Smallwood stayed healthy in college and Clement didn't. If they like Smallwood they will keep him no matter if he wants to give up his jersey # to Darby or not. I also don't think Darby is gonna be too upset if Smallwood wants to keep his number. He seems like a pretty laid back guy. It's not like he won't get a # in the 20s like he wants. But if your injured, not that good, or fumble or whatever it is, on top of a potential star/high calibr player wanting your jersey #, it compiles. Its politics, but its real. There's a former offensive lineman on a local show here Jason Scukanec and he has talked about this before, it can get dicey/sketchy when the crappier player doesn't want to give up the jersey. it starts with the starter offering up cash or to take them out or a present(like a watch or a TV or something) and if they don't accept it, its a slap in the face to them and the veterans of the team(locker room culture) . Jerseys are worth millions and millions and millions in sales for a starter and potential fan favorite , its also part of there branding on social media , if the lesser crappier player doesn't agree , they could potential being hurting team jersey and merch sales and that players brand and the team wants to stay out of it, but they will compile it in a case against you getting cut.
