McCarthy: "I didn't like the hit. [Aaron's] out of the pocket. He's clearly expecting to get hit, but to pin him to the ground like that, I feel that it was an illegal act. I didn't like the hit. It was totally unnecessary in my opinion."

Zimmer: “We’re playing football, and it’s unfortunate that he got hurt, but I think everybody was above board. We’re not a dirty football team; we’ll never be a dirty football team as long as I’m here. We’re going to play within the rules, and sometimes things happen.”

I posted this in the defence thread.

I also suggested that McCarthy should perhaps look at a Clay Matthews highlight reel.

I mean, really. McCarthy has a guy on his own team who has made a career out of this sort of hit.

The Minnesota Vikings’ cornerback rotation got a full-time workout on Sunday in a 23-10 win over the Green Bay Packers. In a game the Vikings never trailed, and despite Packers QB Aaron Rodgers leaving on the second drive with a broken collarbone, Green Bay worked their three-receiver sets.

Per usual, both starting safeties (in this case Anthony Harris joined Harrison Smith with the injury to Andrew Sendejo) played all 66 defensive snaps. So did CB Xavier Rhodes. Trae Waynes played 61 snaps, Terence Newman played 51 and Mackensie Alexander was in for 20 plays.

Playing that much in the nickel meant rookie linebacker Ben Gedeon, normally a starter, didn’t play at all on defense while Eric Kendricks played all 66 downs, Anthony Barr had 28 snaps before leaving with a concussion, and his replacement, Emmanuel Lamur, played the final 38 snaps.

And McCarthy should also learn a little about physics.

nearly identical hit of Matthews on Carson Palmer, other than Barr did a better job wrapping his arms around Rodgers, as the defender is required to do.

both hits were legal, non dirty, non unnecessary, just football being played. nor did either qb get thrown to the ground. to throw something, a ball or a person, you have to have it in your grasp, at least partially let go, and fling it away from your body. Barr bear hugged Rodgers all the way through the fall toward the ground, letting go at the end and rolling away from him.
