Summary

This was a very close game and frustrating loss.  I’m the higher seed but the 76ers feel like the favorite with their star studded lineup.  They had five players score 15+ points on me.  I thought rebounding was going to be a big problem, but I actually out-rebounded them.  No the issue was my terrible defense.  Although Meeks is big, he isn’t really a rim protector.  Mancini is a converted SF that gets pushed around inside, and all of the rest of my starting lineup are undersized poor perimeter defenders.  What they can do though is score.

Since this was my first game played with this roster let me run down the different players and how they perform.  First, starting PG Magnus Norberg, I’ve never really had a player like him before.  He’s absolutely tiny, which makes him very quick and a threat to drive to the basket.  I drew several fouls from defender when driving to the rim with him.  He’s a complete liability defensively though, and he’s worthless in transition defensively.  I’m not quite sure what to make of him, he’s going to have to score A LOT of points to make up for his defense.

SG Bradley Chase struggled early in the game, but with the game on the line I was down big late in the game and Chase nailed three straight 3 pointers to bring me within reach of the lead.  He’s a good shooter I just need to work on his defense.

SF Leonard Dunleavy didn’t do much of anything, he was 0-6 from 3 in the game.

I like the way Stefano Mancini plays, I just need to beef up his interior defense.

6th man SF Vlado Tarlac had a lot of success scoring against their 2nd unit, going 6 of 8 from the field and landing 6 free throws.  His 6’10” frame also makes him one of my better perimeter defenders. I wonder if he’d be a better fit with my starting lineup than Dunleavy.

Summary

This was another very close contest, with me coming out on top this time.  The 76ers are very deep which gives them the ability to play some different lineups.  They’ve been starting Fultz at PG and having Leo Smith come off the bench.  This has allowed Smith to shred my 2nd unit.  Also, Ben Simmons is playing the 3, and he absolutely destroyed Dunleavy all game long.  In the final 2 minutes of the game I brought in Tarlac just to give me some more size against Simmons and he faired a little better.

Tarlac played a great game, he’s my primary scorer with my 2nd unit, he’s good at slashing to the basket.  The real highlight of the game for me though was running the pick and roll with Norberg and PF Stefano Mancini.  Both are so fast that its practically impossible to stop.  They both were my leading scorers for the game and Norberg had 16 assists in the game.  Centers Meeks and Landry both had over 10 rebounds but provided little else.

Summary

The 76ers dominated the 3rd Quarter which won the game for them.  I pretty much couldn’t get going offensively for the majority of the game though.  PG Magnus Norberg had a pretty terrible game going 4-16 from the field.  He was blocked several times because he’s so short.  He also missed a wide open 3 early on and I kind of backed away from shooting with him after that.  SG Bradley Chase stepped up and handled the majority of the offensive load for the game.  He finished with 40 points, which included 16 free throws.

My team just can’t play defense.  Ben Simmons killed me all game again.  My team is really young though and should progress over time.  I’m concerned about the long term fit of having Norberg, Chase, Dunleavy and Mancini all starters though.  One of them might have to be replaced eventually.  Its just too many defensively weak players on the court at the same time.  Also, Meeks needs to be upgraded as I’m getting killed inside.

Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery3.jpg

I only have one lottery selection this year, the #4 odds.  It’s not really a top heavy draft, and there’s no superstar going #1 so winning the lottery wouldn’t mean much.  The top 5 odds are:

1.       Clippers (25.0%)

2.       Warriors (19.9%)

3.       Wizards (15.6%)

4.       Pistons via Bucks (11.9%)

5.       Raptors (8.8%)

Who’s it going to be…..

The Timberwolves have jumped into the top 3, so have I!  The Timberwolves land the #3 overall pick, the Warriors are #2 and I won the lottery.  Lol of course.

I have the #1, #23, #24 & #27 picks in this draft.  That’s probably too many I’ll consider trading at least one away.

Staff Signing/Firing

Retained

CFO – Caleb Rogers – Business (B-), Potential (C), Marketer and Economical Badges – 4 years, $750k.  I had to give this guy a slight raise to retain him, but he added the Economical badge so I think its worth it.

Head Coach – Logan Schmidt – Offense (B+), Defense (A+), Potential (C), Tactician, Rejuvenator, and Teacher Badges – 4 years, $5.25 mil.  This guy is a great coach at a great price!  I think he’s a computer generated coach because I’ve never heard of him IRL, but I got a steal in this guy.

Head Scout – Mason Miller – Scouting (A), Potential (C), Sleuth and Hard Worker Badges – 4 years, $425k.  He’s a really good scout, no brainer to bring him back.

Trainer – Gregory Peterson – Training (A), Potential (C), Fitness Guru and Preparer Badges – 4 years, $450k.  Like Miller this is a no brainer.

Not Retained

AGM – Eli Best – Contracts (A-), Trading (B), Potential (C ), Wingman Badge – NOT RETAINED.  There was a slightly better candidate available.

Assistant Coach – Dwight Howard – Offense (D-), Defense (B), Potential (C+), Former Player Badge – NOT RETAINED.  Dwight hasn’t really developed at all which sucks because he had a decent potential rating.

New Signings

AGM – Michael Williams – Contracts (A-), Trading (A), Potential (C ), Wingman Badge – 4 years, $700k.  He has a better Trade rating and was the best candidate available.

Assistant Coach – Conrad Oakley – Offense (B-), Defense (B+), Potential (C ), Tactician Badge – 4 years, $1.0 mil.  I wish he had the Teacher badge but he’s a solid coach.

2028 NBA Draft

NBA_Draft_logo_(no_year).png

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 1 overall

Round 1 – 23 overall

Round 1 – 24 overall

Round 1 – 27 overall

There’s no obvious #1 pick in this draft, and honestly I think I have to consider trading this pick as it might give me better value than actually selecting a player.  Here are the top options at #1:

PG Alan Brady

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
1 PG Alan Brady 6'2" 196 6'9" Louisville 72 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ A- C- D C+ B- C- C A

Brady is probably the best athlete in the class (92 SPD, 83 ACC, 78 LQ) and has 99 Vertical.  But he’s only 6’2” and can’t shoot.  He’s not really a great defender either.  He has the Acrobat, Chase Down Artist and Posterizing badges, which really aren’t anything special for a PG.  His potential rating also isn’t what I’d want for a #1 overall pick.

C Julian Hammons

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
2 C Julian Hammons 7'0" 243 7'5" Miami 73 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- B+ D- A- C- C+ B B+ C-

Hammons is a solid Center prospect with 73 SPD, 50 ACC, 51 LQ but impressive 91 Strength.  He’s the best interior defender in the class and a solid rebounder.  He also has a solid mid-ranger jumper, and has the Drop Stepper, Pick & Popper and Rim Protector badges.  The Rim Protector badge is the most important badge for my Centers to have.  His potential rating, like Brady’s, is less than ideal for a #1 overall pick.

SF Sylvester Floyd

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
6 SF Sylvester Floyd 6'8" 231 7'1" Kentucky 69 A+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- B- D- D+ C C- C C B-

Floyd’s athleticism is passable but not elite (94 SPD, 60 ACC, 67 LQ, 87 VER).  He’s very raw right now, but has the Defensive Stopper and Pick Dodger badgers, so he should develop into a high end perimeter defender.  He really can’t do anything offensively though and projects as a defensive specialist.

Now I know I need defense, but with the #1 overall pick you’re hoping for a 2 way player.  Floyd would have to replace one of my existing guys in the lineup and would take several years to groom.  I don’t really see what Brady gives me that I don’t already have.  Hammons makes the most sense but he doesn’t feel like a #1 overall pick.

I think I’m going to consider a trade here:

*TRADE*

Golden State Warriors Receive

#1 overall

#23 overall

#27 overall

2030 Pistons 1st Round Pick (unprotected)

Detroit Pistons Receive

#2 overall

2029 Warriors 1st Round Pick (unprotected)

PF Brent Jinks (71)

This trade should net me another high lottery pick next year, and I don’t think the Warriors will take Hammons at #1.  Jinks is pretty lame I might just cut him.

The Warriors took Brady #1, I’m back on the clock.  I feel like I’ve milked the cpu enough for value here so I’ll just go ahead and select someone.

With the 2nd pick in the NBA draft the Detroit Pistons select:

C Julian Hammons, Miami

dD2Da3G.jpg

He’s a solid Center prospect, he just isn’t a typical #2 overall value.

SF Sylvester Floyd goes #3 overall to the Timberwolves, I wonder if he would have been a better selection than Hammons.  The Jazz have traded up to #4 and select SF Rolando Nash (75 OVR).  The Wizards take Center Corie Grove (72 OVR) at 5.  I’m not on the clock until 24, time to sim.

These are the top players available at 24:

SG Julian Stewart

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
18 SG Julian Stewart 6'5" 212 6'8" Wisconsin GB 68 B-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B- B- D- D C C D D+ A

Stewart is a heck of an athlete for this late in the draft (90 SPD, 74 ACC, 83 LQ, 86 VER), and is a solid perimeter defender.  I wish he was a little longer, but he has solid badges like Acrobat, Chase Down Artist, Lob City Finisher and Posterizer.  He can’t shoot but with his speed should be able to get points in transition.  He’s a solid perimeter defender prospect.

Honestly there’s no one else worth consideration here, Stewart fits a need and is great value this late in the first round.

With the 24th pick in the NBA draft the Detroit Pistons select:

SG Julian Stewart, Wisconsin Green-Bay

NyRdurn.jpg

Drafting two prospects named Julian in the same draft class?  What are the odds?

And there ends another draft class for me.  I feel like I maximized value in this weaker draft class.  The two Julians are both solid defensive prospects and I landed what should be an unprotected lottery pick next year.

UPDATE

Both Julians actually have A- potential ratings.
