Small Town Values
(Rugby Union - News) Rising Springboks star Aphiwe Dyantyi tests positive for banned substance https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=12261692 Quote Rising Springboks star Aphiwe Dyantyi, who won World Rugby's breakthrough player award last year, failed a doping test at a training camp with the South Africa squad last month. Dyantyi said he was informed by South Africa's anti-doping agency that a urine sample he gave at the camp on July 2 tested positive for a banned substance. He denied "ever taking any prohibited substance, intentionally or negligently, to enhance my performance on the field." "I believe in hard work and fair play. I have never cheated and never will," Dyantyi said in a statement. He requested his 'B' sample be tested. The substance Dyantyi tested positive for wasn't named. He said he was also tested two weeks before, on June 15, and that test was clear. Dyantyi, who turns 25 next week, has scored six tries in 13 tests, including two in South Africa's 36-34 victory over the All Blacks in New Zealand last year. The wing had a stellar start to his international career, leading to him being recognised as 2018's best newcomer by World Rugby, but he last played a test in November and has been limited by injury this season. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Update) Aphiwe Dyantyi formally charged with doping after B-sample tests positive https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/aphiwe-dyantyi-positive-b-sample-doping/ Quote Springbok winger Aphiwe Dyantyi faces a long suspension after being formally charged with a doping offence, the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed on Friday This is after his”B” samples tested positive for multiple anabolic steroids and metabolites. Should he be found guilty of a doping offence, the 2018 World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year faces a minimum four-year ban from the sport, which will see him return to action in 2023, aged 29. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “I want to deny ever taking any prohibited substance, intentionally or negligently to enhance my performance on the field. I believe in hard work and fair play,” he said in a statement. “I have never cheated and never will. The presence of this prohibited substance in my body has come as a massive shock to me and together with my management team and experts appointed by them, we are doing everything we can to get to the source of this and to prove my innocence.” ~ Aphiwe Dyantyi Edited August 30, 2019 by Small Town Values

Small Town Values
(Rugby Union - News) Chester Williams: South Africa World Cup winner dies aged 49 https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/49615522 Quote Former South Africa international and 1995 World Cup winner Chester Williams has died at the age of 49. Williams played 27 Tests for the Springboks between 1993 and 2000, scoring 14 tries. The former wing was the only black player in the World Cup-winning team that defeated rivals New Zealand 15-12 in South Africa 24 years ago. "Chester was a true pioneer in South African rugby," said Mark Alexander, the president of SA Rugby. "His performances at the World Cup in 1995, as a snapshot of his Springbok career, will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of our rugby public. "The news of Chester's passing is devastating and hard to believe, as he was still young and seemingly in good health." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rugby World Cup 2019: Magnus Bradbury travels with Scotland as cover for Jamie Ritchie https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/49625907 Quote Back-row Magnus Bradbury will join Scotland's World Cup travelling party on Monday as "precautionary injury cover" for Jamie Ritchie. Bradbury is drafted in after Ritchie suffered a facial injury in Friday's win over Georgia at Murrayfield. Ritchie is to remain in Scotland for further assessment. "Jamie should be fine to join us at the end of the week and take a part in the World Cup, so that's a real positive," said Gregor Townsend. Bradbury came off the bench to replace Edinburgh team-mate Ritchie on Friday. Edited September 9, 2019 by Small Town Values
