You don't think some team will be willing to sign him in 2022?

What kind of bag are they giving him if he forfeits 44 mill?

Probably not he'll be 36 years old and who knows if he'll be able to stay healthy or play at as high of a level next year.

The value of that ’21/22 option is $44.2MM, which is more than Paul has ever earned in a single season and would be one of the highest salaries in the NBA. A year or two ago, the 36-year-old was considered a virtual lock to pick up that option. But back-to-back All-Star seasons in Oklahoma City and Phoenix have buoyed his stock, putting him in position to secure one last multiyear deal.

Pincus suggests that Paul might be seeking a contract in the range of $100MM over three years.

He'll essentially be doing what Gordon Hayward did last off-season. Declined his $34M player option and then secured a 4 yr/$120M deal in free agency. Took a $6M pay cut this year but also ensured himself near max money over the next 3 when he wasn't going to get that from anyone else in free agency if he got hurt.

Gordon Hayward was 30. Huge difference. CP is gonna be 36.5 by the time next season starts. How much you think teams paying for his 37.5 and 38.5 year old seasons? lol

It would be stupid of CP3 not to opt in, but I'm sure @11sanchez11would appreciate it.

Gordon Hayward was also never really the same player after he got injured and has been hurt the last two seasons in Charlotte and Boston. He wasn't going to get the same type of contract if he would've opted in and missed 30 games in Boston.

I'm sure the Suns will give him 3 yr/$100M regardless of how their season ends. They went from a team that had missed the playoffs in 10 straight years to a potential NBA finals appearance/championship. Him opting out would ensure another $100M in career earnings rather than $44.5M and praying he can stay healthy/play well enough to get a nice deal next off-season.

And if the Suns do let him walk they'll have to resign Payne to a fairly big deal with Ayton's extension looming so they really won't have any cap flexibility either way. And it's not like the Suns are a big market team that will be able to attract a star FA in free agency.

Either way he's not leaving the Suns.

He could definitely leave the Suns, based on reports it's almost a guarantee that he'll opt out. If he does he'll be eligible for a 3 yr/$140M extension from the Suns or a 3 yr/$136M deal somewhere else. The Heat can clear $35M in cap space if they decline Dragic/Iggy's options and the Knicks have a ton of cap space as well.

If the Suns don't want to pay him I could definitely see the Heat giving him a 3 year deal and then looking to move their young assets for another veteran to go all in for a championship with CP3/Jimmy/Bam and whoever they could land with their young guys.

That would be a mistake.

The Heat have been interested in Paul for years and are reportedly ready to trade their young guys so they can push for a championship next season. And it would be a very Knicks move to give him that kind of deal.

I bring up Hayward because of the similarity of their contractual situations. Paul has a player option for 2021-22 that pays him $44 million, so he’s not walking away from that for just anything. But as with Hayward a year ago (who turned down a $35 million option once four years and $120 million were on the table from Charlotte), one wonders if Paul might walk away from the option year if a longer deal for less annual money were out there. He won’t lack for suitors. Dallas, for instance, is craving a secondary ballhandler to pair next to Luka Doncic and just so happens to have about $35 million in cap room coming its way. Could the Mavs offer a three-year deal worth $110 million to lure CP3 to Texas as the third pillar of an All-Star triangle next to Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis? - John Hollinger

Wojnarowski also mentioned that the New York Knicks could be a "leverage point" for Paul in any potential negotiations with the Suns. The Knicks are run by Paul's former agent Leon Rose and they both have cap space and a need for point guard.

I believe you. Not saying that it can't happen.

Paul will opt out and the Suns will give him 3 yr/$100M+ almost guaranteed at this point, no way they can let him walk and he has leverage because other teams will pay him that.
