Matt Nagy - Your Thoughts?

Depressed Bears fan here on a bye week... I'm already thinking about our future head coach and Matt Nagy is a name that intrigues me.

I understand he has been with Reid for 10 years and is currently your OC (but not play caller).

I wanted to ask ya'll what you thought about him: does he make an impact on this team/offense? How does Alex Smith, Patrick Mahomes, and other players on your roster feel about him.

Do you think he could succeed as a head coach? Or is he more of an offensive specialist that doesn't know how to manage 53 players and myriad coaches.

Thanks in advance, LOVE that offense you guys are running man... so much effin' fun.

Honestly Andy Reid gets all the press per usual, even with players.

But he's got a future as a head coach by what Andy Reid. He just gets "it"

Hopefully not until the Reid retires and he takes over for him.

Since you didn't get too much of a response initially, @G08, I'll give you mine now.

Someone on Twitter, I can't remember who, said that Matt Nagy is a great head coach hire, just one or two years from now, and that would kind of be my main thought. I 100% wanted to retain Nagy. He did good work with Smith and the offense this year, the offense has unquestionably improved over his time year, and I was excited to have him grooming Mahomes. From that perspective, I think it is an excellent choice for Chicago as well, as they have a young QB very much in need of grooming and an offense being built around him as well. Where I would be concerned is the fact that he's very green. He's coached in the NFL for something like 7 years (much of that time at lower positions), not counting his time as an intern. Before that I want to say he was an OC for a high school team or something. So he's still quite inexperienced, and the only NFL experience he has is under Reid. Worked for him at low level coaching positions in Philly, jumped ship with him to KC in 2013. Now, the bright side here, is all the same concerns were there for Doug Pederson, and it's safe to say that he's worked out. But at the same time, you have a guy who really has only ever worked under Reid, and the main reason for the hype around Nagy is the performance of KC's offense, which Reid himself is heavily involved in. So you have to hope that Nagy can replicate that success without Reid's tutelage, and I think it's crucial you get him an established, independent DC (if you keep Fangio, my confidence in the future for Chicago goes up, if he walks...we'll see.) You also have to hope he can handle the jump from a partial OC to head coach.

All of these criticisms could also have applied to Doug Pederson and Sean McVay (note that they have Jim Schwartz and Wade Phillips at DC, respectively.) So that's a definite positive there. But it doesn't mean the end result will be the same. I think Nagy would've been better off spending another year or two as OC, possibly with more responsibilities than he handled over the last 2 years here, but I also understand why teams would want to get him now.
