Rome

Formations /Approach

While we list 11 personnel as the starters , we also will heavily use a two TE look this week as we want to attack a limited LB group as well.  With Hungary down to two healthy DT we are gonna run a faster tempo and tire those guys out. We still run our four wr and even five wr looks at times when needed but we don't need to get over fancy this week as we feel we have a huge talent advantage on this side of the ball

Up Front /the running game

Rome is happy to return Tyron Smith into the starting lineup this week to solidify a great offensive line.  Cancun brings in a solid outside rush with a good trio of edges  The DT spot is a bit underwhelming however so we plan on being able to double bulldoze inside behind our road grading interior and let either of the guards take on that second level .   Ramcyk has been his usual dependable self.  We'll have a chip ready to help Smith if we feel he needs it.   We are going to run a lot inside today but we'll also run some counters off of it to get an advantage over an over pursuant defense. Putting Kamara, out of two RB looks, in motion out should lighten the box or allow for a quick RPO hit to him outside if we can get Ivan pace on him whose an edge rusher .  We also have no problem going into heavy formations and running right up the gut with Ertz leading the way for Swift.   As an added running game wrinkle, we have a couple QB draws out of empty sets ready against a zone heavy defense with retreating LB.   We are going to use all types of runs here, zones, power os, dives, and off tackles. We trust the offensive line and Swift and Kamara to get some nice gains for us.

The passing game

This week, we are preparing  for all of our zone buster routes and plays.   We have our floods, seams, levels and new this week swing screens to Kamara or Swift to attack the zones.  If we are seeing majority cover two we are gonna hit that space on the sideline between the corner and safety or on the deep side middle post to Waddle or Cooper .   We have a savvy group of WR who know how too find the hole in the zone and sit in them.  Herbert can extend plays with his legs if needed to find angles to hit the WR. Waddle is especially dangerous with the ball in his hands so we are going to scheme combo routes to get him open. We definitely think he can run past any of the it corners in a cover three unless they are plying super off coverage.  If we see it, Herbert and Waddle know to hit the quick pass where one missed tackle is a huge gain   Allen is a slot master and should be able to sit in a zone easily with his chemistry with Herbert already established.  Woods brings a fourth veteran WR when we go four wide

If for whatever reason we see them going man, we will switch to more of a quick hit underneath type of game with Allen and Cooper doing most of the dirty work.   We'll often move a RB in motion to get a one on one with a LB or if they assign a safety to him, we'll flex out Kincaid against the LB.  If it's a cover one look we'll streak Waddle down the sideline to see if we can hit a big play    if we are seeing a lot of cover two we are gonna run verticals with the outside WR and a TE up the middle of the field with Allen running directly at the mlb zone to make sure he stays up short. This should yield some big gains with two safeties unable to guard three guys deep and Herbert's gun to get it there quickly

The other thing we are going to to incorporate more is the screen game which will slow down their edge rushers as well. All three of of our RB are excellently pass catchers to we plan on hitting them with little dig routes underneath against the zone to pick up four - five easy yards against bailing LB

The QB

Justin Herbert has been outstanding this year and we are going to lean on him this week to make the right reads.  We obviously have a way better line than he has in real life life and when given time this year, his rocket arm has been deadly

Defense

This week we are going to go back to our cover one man /cover three zone look against a dangerous Hungary offense    We are going to lean more towards the cover three this week but we do want to toss in some cover one tomorrow keep Geno guessing.  When we blitz it'll be from a LB or underneath safety with zone behind it

Up front

Hungary has been rotating starting backs this year but we have a front to stop the running game.  We like to rotate our interior with Tomlinson getting early down work for Autry and Huff getting some edge rushing opportunities in long down and distances.  Autry will get some early down work for Barrett at DE to keep him fresh.  Harris and Jefferson provide depth when a starter needs a

Back 7

Humphrey is going to line up with Metcalf, Bland gets Lockett and Peterson gets whoever the third wr is this week.   They'll shadow and we'll adjust zones accordingly for motion.  Milano gets Hockenson while Bolton gets the RB. Delpit is the underneath zone with Cisco playing center field when we play our cover one.

Hungary

Offense:
Pass/Run: Balance
Playbook: West Coast
The Roman Empire once spread far and wide across the majority of Europe including what is now modern day Hungary. However, Roman control began  to waiver once the Huns arrived and after 4 centuries of Roman rule the Roman invaders were pushed back West to Rome.

Today Rome tries to reenter Hungary trying to conquer our turf once more. However, the Hungary Hippos rise once more to show why the Hippos are the most deadliest animals in the land.

This week we will start by pounding the rock early and often with our stable of backs. We will double block Autry and neutralize the internal push of Rome. We want to get to the second level of Rome and get chunks of 4-5 yards on the ground. We will also use the additional blocking off the edge with the TE to chip on Rome's edge rushers. This week Rome is left with Karlaftis (86% snap count) Shaq Barrett (60% snap count) newly signed Huff (30% snap count) and Andre Carter (17% snap count). We want to wear down their edge rushers with punishing blows from our OTs and TEs. We will show 2 TE looks as well during this time.
When Rome subs in an inferior edge rusher as they are gassed we will go no huddle and no subs to keep the inferior edge rushers on the field.

The heavy running game early will help set up play action. I have 0 fear of Patrick Peterson. He has given up over 250 yards on the season through 4 games. Whoever he covers we will get the ball into their hands. The physical Meycalf and the speedy Lockett make a strong dynamic duo. We also will get the ball to Austin frequently with his breakaway speed.

The RBs and Hock will be used frequently in the passing game after chip blocks (TE). Milano is solid in coverage so we will see who is covered by the other LB/safety that we feel we can get a win on.

Defense:
Rome's oline is the walking wounded right now. Tyron returns from a two week absence with a knee injury. Pocic sustained chest and knee injuries and Ramcyzk has his own foot injury that has limited him this week.

To put pressure on Herbert we are going to crash the edges to try to keep him in the pocket. Crosby will test Tyron to see how healed his knee is while Anderson bookends the other side. In the center of our defense Cox and Ogunjobi will drive up the middle with Pocic and the occasional 5th blitzer (S/LB) will join them 25% of the time to blow up the pocket. Clowney and Harris will spell Anderson mainly as Crosby plays over 97% of his snaps almost weekly. Kinlaw will rotate between Cox and Ogun for passing downs and Al Woods will come on for Ogun on short yardage.

Coverage this week will be a fun task with Rome's litany of receivers and the leagues obliviousness of how good Hungary's secondary actually is on paper vs. name recognition.

We will primarily play Cover 1 with some Cover 2 thrown in sporadically. We will run man coverage with the deep safety alternating to not tip the defense. Okudah and Juju will have tight coverage on the boundary. Both are having excellent seasons post injury. Witherspoon who has allowed a sub 40 QBR on the season will be in the slot. We want to force contested catches, not jam them at the line.

The safety not playing deep will be on the TE. Pace will have RB and will use the greendog technique if the RB stays in to block and Wilson will be in the middle. When one of the LBers/safety blitzes Wilson will pick up the extra coverage.

In 4 WR, McCreary will come on. In 2 TE, Cunningham will come on.

If needed against the run, a safety will drop into the box pre-snap.

- I have more than 2 Healthy Tackles

- Don't go senile on me. I'm not Cancun 😂

Because they are so obsessed with snap percentage.  That's 40% of snaps Javon kinlaw stepping in to start

Who also is 11th in the league in QB pressures with his snaps ;)

no, no, we are well aware the Hungary secondary sucks. Maybe Jeff Okudah has magically gotten not-bad in Atlanta but he's only played two games so I need a bigger sample size before giving him any benefit of the doubt.

If this was a week later with all the injuries Rome has suffered, I'd probably give Hungary more of a chance, but I like what Rome did with protecting Herbert and even incorporating some QB draws to make Hungary pay for coming after the edges.

As I said, obliviousness.
