Why the transition tag? I feel like that makes no sense

Lets the market dictate his contract.

Means he’s asking for a bigger amount than NE thinks he’s worth/could potentially get in FA. So they want to keep him, and are going to let him test his waters without giving up his rights exclusively, Different from the non-exclusive tag because that “scares” teams away from putting an offer on the table.

This, to me, is less of a hard-ball tactic, but one that still shows the team really wants to retain him on a modest deal.

IIRC this allows them to match any offer he gets on the open market, right?

Yes. No pick in return. Basically means they’ve negotiated and haven’t come to an agreement, so NE will let another team do the negotiations and match it or let him walk.

No nor a comp pick next year unless the tag is revoked

The ghost of GM Bellichik still haunts this hallowed team. What a stupid, pointless out to give their best player--not saying much, but he is. Now that means the Patriots have to beat every other bid on the market for their own guy. They could have just franchised him and continued to negotiate.

Wasn’t even the best safety on the roster last season.

Also, no, they just match whatever he can find in FA. Don’t have to beat it.

ehh hard disagree

Best players on the team last season (excluding healthy Judon and Gonzalez) were Peppers and Barmore. Easily.

EDIT: Last season, Tavai would be over Dugger too. Dugger’s good, don’t get me wrong, just not the team’s best defensive player.

Y'all still have Mac locked down for one more year. Don't worry your pretty regular-sized head about that.

But also, you know the team best: is Dugger not that good or do you mean there's a star I'm missing?

It sets the starting point for the APY @ $13.8M rather than $17.1M. They don’t have to beat, they just need to match.

Not to mention Rhondre Stevenson, Zeke Elliott, Michael Onwenu, David Andrews, Hunter Henry, Demario Douglas, Anfernee Jennings, their linebackers, and several other defensive backs all played at the same level as Dugger.
