kgarrett12486
Quote The Dodgers and catcher Will Smith are working on a long-term extension, per a report from Juan Toribio of MLB.com. It will be a ten-year contract, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. It comes with a $140MM guarantee, per Jeff Passan of ESPN, who adds that the two sides are finalizing the deal. The deal includes some deferred money, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Yikes. Not a fan of this deal for either side honestly. More so for Smith though. hrubes20
Seems like a typical Dodgers contract these days, complete with the deferred money. They would be fine paying Smith $140 million over the next 6 years, but added 4 extra years to spread out the tax hit.
naptownskinsfan
Chris Davis set a precedent with retiring and the team coming to an agreement on some of the contract passing through, so I can easily see this being a case where this might happen. 10 years for a catcher is a bit much. Even moreso when said cathcer is about to turn 30 and has seen is OPS steadily decline over the last (3) years straight.

He looked better than ever in the first half. Was he injured at some point or did he just wear down like Sean Murphy!
