TCMD - Buccaneers

Trojan

Recommended Posts

I have the Buccaneers for this edition of the Total Control Mock Draft (TCMD) ran by ny92jefferies (found in this board: https://forums.footballsfuture.com/forum/9-gm-mock-drafts/).

I am a Raiders fan, but I lived in Tampa for a couple years and enjoyed the Buccaneers around 2008-2010 and have casually followed and rooted for them sense. Although I won't run the mock offseason appropriately in line with a severely realistic offseason, I hope you guys can follow along, comment, critique and give input on the process. It's a fun exercise of a "what could happen if", usually there are some wild turns and it's fun to participate.

The exercise doesn't start until after Valentines day, but I have a pair of somewhat large trades lined up to execute day one. First off the Buccaneers will receive Robert Quinn from the Rams for the Buccaneers third round pick and DeSean Jackson (reuniting him with Sean McVay, and opening some cap room for the DLine upgrade and play time for Chris Godwin). The third round pick was likely high, but my vision of what I am looking for Robert Quinn was ideal so I accepted there counter offer right away to secure the addition. The second trade is Muhammad Wilkerson from the Jets in exchange for the fourth round pick the Jets requested in their team's trade block.

For those unfamiliar with TCMD, once FA begins each round of FA teams can propose up to three FA bids constructing a contract offer that meets the players individual minimums and high bidder is awarded the player. The three per round is the strategic element unlike real life, and although I'd like input and am willing to share who I envision would be the best fits, I don't think directly discussing the players or offers in public view of the thread is ideal as we'd risk being competed against and/or outbid by outside spy readers.

Additionally I view a defensive scheme of a 4-3 Under base with 3-4 looks as ideal. This hybrid scheme I think fits the Buccaneers talent better than a full blown 3-4 base transition.
Defensively I view this as (listing the trades lined up, and only players under contract):
5 Technique Defense End (2 Gap responsibilities): Muhammad Wilkerson, Davonte Lampert, Pat O'Connor
1 Technique Defensive Tackle (2 Gap responsibilities):  Dontari Poe,  Stevie Tu’ikolovatu
3 Technique Under Tackle (1 Gap responsibilities): Gerald McCoy, Sterling Bailey, Channing Ward
9 Technique Edge Rusher (1 Gap responsibilities): Robert Quinn, Noah Spence
Outside Linebacker: Davante Bond, LaTroy Lewis
Inside Linebacker: Kwon Alexander, Riley Bullough
Outside Linebacker: Lavonte David
CB: Trumaine Johnson, Robert McClain, David Rivers
CB: Bashaud Breeland, Josh Robinson, Ryan Smith
Nickel: Vernon Hargreaves
FS: Jimmie Ward
SS: Justin Evans, Chris Conte
K:
P: Bryan Anger

Offensively:
QB: Jameis Winston
RB: Demarco Murray, Peyton Barber, Jaquizz Rodgers
FB: Alan Cross
WR: Mike Evans, Freddie Martino
WR: Chris Godwin,  Bobo Wilson
Slot: Adam Humphries
TE: OJ Howard, Cameron Brate, Anthony Auclair
LT: Donovan Smith, Leonard Wester
LG:
C: Joe Hawley
RG: Ali Marpet,
RT: Demar Dotson,  Cole Garner

Draft Picks:

2.
3. Robert Quinn, DE Rams
4. Muhammad Wilkerson, DT Jets
4. (Titans, from Murray trade)
5.
6. Demarco Murray, RB Titans

I would say Ryan Smith is a far better outside CB than safety.

And I don't like the Quinn trade. Trading DJax and a much lower pick, or just the third would be far more ideal and reasonable.

I agree I overpaid on Quinn, but I did so more or else based off how I feel other GMs will act in the TCMD.

For example historically people bypass rookie QBs in the (mock) draft. A Bradley Chubb has a near zero chance of reaching the 7th pick in this compared to a reasonable chance in real life (I don't view Key as a real option at 7, and Davenport is too much of an unknown to me at this point that I'd rather not at 7). Additionally free agency can go insane (one year the 49ers bid two NTs over 15mil each in the same round, and then signed Romo to something like a 1 year 30mil deal), addressing an edge rusher that can reach double digit sacks was a premium need. The only other DE of that double digit talent that I could see were Clowney on the trade block (likely a first compensation to get him) or someone like Ezekiel Ansah in free agency who I view as similar to Robert Quinn (10ish sack potential fairly easily, also miss 1-2 games a year easily), but I don't want to be in the bidding process for him when other forumers are willing to go all out for their stud.

Ideally I'll be able to get a team to trade up with me in a small way (Raiders, 49ers and Buccs seem interested in a similar pool of players, perhaps one really falls for a specific guy and is willing to make a move to get first dibs) and recoup the pick (either the 3rd or 4th). DeSean I view as having been a solid contributor, but an obstacle in the near future for the development of Chris Godwin who I think is very talented.

I forgive you for the D Jack trade because DE has been a need since 2007. Quinn has a handful of good years left and we could find a slot via draft. Probably won’t be as good as D Jack but I’d argue DE is the more important position. If I’m you, I say trade back and acquire more picks. You did good getting Wilkerson and Quinn.

FA and draft needs to address CB/OL needs.

We traded up to draft Beck in the fourth round, he had a solid rookie year, and we flipped him for a sixth?

Oof.

That's my least favorite trade I did.
It was Beckwith and a 6th for Demarco and a 4th though. Essentially I viewed it as Murray for a 6th. and Beckwith for a 4th.
Teams in the top few picks have traded out already, and it's looking like Quenton Nelson very much could be gone by the Buccs pick. Replacing Beckwith with Bond allows a spot for a potential drafting of Trumaine Edmunds. Vita Vea is off the board now with a Poe signing, Nelson would be great, and then Jimmie Ward is simply a last year of his deal player, so Fitzpatrick or Derwin James could still make sense.

The Keenum signing (and I've offered Jameis to the Bills for a second [nobody valued him earlier; Miami asked for Jameis + Comp for Tannehill when I asked if they were interested for example; update: the Bills declined and took Lamar Jackson instead])  I know would likely be wildly unpopular. I signed him for 3 years 30mil though which I think is a great contract to bridge to another on the cheap, and don't have to pay Winston a mega deal with his issues.

The first round so far has went:
1. Browns - Sam Darnold
2. Jets - Josh Rosen
3. Giants - Quenton Nelson
4. Browns - Saquon Barkley
5. Raiders - Bradley Chubb
6.  Steelers - Baker Mayfield
7. Miami - Roquan Smith
8. Colts - Derwin James
9. Cowboys - Tremaine Edmunds
10. 49ers - Minkah Fitzpatrick
11. Buccs - Marcus Davenport
12. Bengals - Vita Vea
13. Saints - Josh Allen
14. Packers - Harold Landry
15. Cardinals - Calvin Ridley
