The tricky part is that those guys often get contracts that are too big for too long for what they do. They are the guys who ultimately get you into trouble by overpaying and keeping around too long. But the truth is that he and Marino are eating so much of the tough defensive minutes that you can't just one for one replace him with Luke Hughes. There would be some merit to maybe making that replacement Kevin Bahl, but at this point we won't even put Bahl in ahead of Smith, so I'm not sure how comfortable they would be moving him into a middle pairing that is eating a ton of hard defensive minutes.
