Motor City MoJo: Detroit Lion updates

Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson got off to such a hot start this season that he didn’t lose his league lead in sacks even after most of the league had an extra game to catch up to him.

Hutchinson has 6.5 sacks this season, and even after the Lions’ Week Five bye, that’s the most in the NFL. Every other player who has more than four sacks this season plays for a team that has played five games with 12 remaining.

As the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Hutchinson had 9.5 sacks as a rookie and then increased that to 11.5 sacks last year. This year he appears poised to create a new career high, and perhaps even threaten the NFL’s official sack record of of 22.5, shared by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt.

If Hutchinson keeps playing at his current level, he’ll also be a strong candidate to win the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

Just another example, in a long list of examples, of a team getting blinded by raw athletic numbers opposed to believing the tape. And making a massive mistake because of it.

I’ll never understand how Jacksonville talked themselves out of drafting Hutchinson.

Trent Baalke thought he was drafting Aldon Smith 2.0

What he didn't realise was that he was giving up Nick Bosa 2.0

It should be no wonder that it appears that Baalke can't get along with Pederson either (he famously clashed with Harbaugh which led to Harbaugh's departure).

There was a reason that Pederson was trying to get Spielman in the front office.

I guess when you were developed as a scout with the Jets (during Parcells' tenure) and Daniel Snyder's regime, that tells you everything you need to know.  🤣

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

Lions RB David Montgomery reached agreement on a two-year, $18.25 million extension that contractually ties him to Detroit through the 2027 season, per source. The deal includes $10.5 million in new guaranteed money.

Montgomery had two years left on his current deal. Detroit taking care of its own early.

According to the Detroit News, which cites an unnamed source close to Hutchinson, the injury “appears less severe than a worst-case scenario.” As a result, Hutchinson might be able to return for the Super Bowl.

Obviously, the Lions would have to qualify for the game. Not having Hutchinson could make that considerably more difficult.

The Lions aren’t going to replace Aidan Hutchinson’s production with one player, but they do need someone to fill his spot on the roster.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports that they will be signing defensive end Isaiah Thomas off of the Bengals’ practice squad this week. Hutchinson had surgery in Dallas after fracturing his tibia and fibula in the Lions’ win over the Cowboys.

Thomas was a 2022 seventh-round pick and appeared in 10 games for the Browns during his rookie season. He had nine tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery, and two passes defensed, but failed to make the cut in 2023 and moved on to the Bengals after getting waived again this summer.

Isaiah Thomas playing for Detroit. Boy, that seems familiar!  Can they go out and get a linebacker named Bill Lambier???
