That doesn't mean he shouldn't have been.

If J.J. Watt was not as highly viewed as the guy everyone thought was one of the best defensive line players in Robert Quinn, complaining about them skipping over Watt is just 20/20 hindsight.

Yeah, Quinn was likely the guy if they picked at 10 there.

Aside from the terrible QBs that people wanted to stuff into the Redskins' draft slot that year, he was pretty much the consensus pick there. They not only met with him before the draft, they met with a couple of his teammates (Greg Little and Quan Sturdivant) as well -- which I assume was an attempt to get even more information about him, given that they never made any effort to draft either of those guys.

Technically, it's true that they could have drafted J.J. Watt there. But they weren't going to, so it's sort of a red herring. They also technically could have drafted Justin Houston, Jurrell Casey, K.J. Wright, or Richard Sherman there -- but they weren't going to, so it's not something they "gave up" in order to move down.

They gave up on their plan to take Robert Quinn, which I think turned out to be a win overall. We got likely the more valuable player, Quinn's excellent 2nd and 3rd seasons notwithstanding, and we got a valuable pick to boot. They frittered that pick away (it was a terrible draft and they way overdid the trade down thing), but the move was a good one at the time it was made.
